The "Ostracoda: database for the Neogene of Portugal", prepared under the Project "POCTl/36531/PAL/2000 - Studies on Portuguese Palaeontology / Post-Paleozoic", is presented. It provides information about 158 especies that have been recognized in sections and boreholes concerning Neogene units in Portugal

Predicting the critical density of topological defects in O(N) scalar field theories

O(N) symmetric λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 field theories describe many critical phenomena in the laboratory and in the early Universe. Given N and D3D\leq 3, the dimension of space, these models exhibit topological defect classical solutions that in some cases fully determine their critical behavior. For N=2, D=3 it has been observed that the defect density is seemingly a universal quantity at T_c. We prove this conjecture and show how to predict its value based on the universal critical exponents of the field theory. Analogously, for general N and D we predict the universal critical densities of domain walls and monopoles, for which no detailed thermodynamic study exists. This procedure can also be inverted, producing an algorithm for generating typical defect networks at criticality, in contrast to the canonical procedure, which applies only in the unphysical limit of infinite temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, uses RevTex, typos in Eq.(11) and (14) correcte

Multifocal Septic Arthritis, Gluteal Abscess and Spondylodiscitis by Streptococcus Dysgalactiae Subspecies Equisimilis After an Intramuscular Injection

We present the case of a 63-year-old man, admitted for hand cellulitis and acute kidney injury. A Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp equisimilis (SDSE) was isolated in blood cultures and despite directed intravenous antibiotherapy, the patient evolved unfavourably, with dorsolumbar spondylodiscitis, multifocal septic arthritis and abscesses. CT also showed densification of the gluteal muscles, multiple air bubbles in the psoas, paraspinal muscles and spinal canal that were associated with an intramuscular injection administered 1 week earlier for a backache. After escalation of the antibiotherapy and intensive supportive measures, the patient showed improvement and was discharged after 8 weeks of antibiotherapy. The incidence of invasive SDSE infections has been growing, especially in immunosupressed patients. In this case, despite no predisposing factor identified, it evolved to severe sepsis. The intramuscular injection, a trivialised but not harmless procedure, was the assumed port of entry, as previously described in another case report.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Contraceptive Choices Pre and Post Pregnancy in Adolescence

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of adolescent pregnancy in the future contraceptive choices. A secondary aim is to verify whether these choices differ from those made after an abortion. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING:Adolescent Unit of a tertiary care center. PARTICIPANTS:212 pregnant teenagers. INTERVENTIONS: Medical records review. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Intended pregnancy rate and contraceptive methods used before and after pregnancy. For contraceptive choices after pregnancy we considered: Group 1 - teenagers who continued their pregnancy to delivery (n = 106) and Group 2 - the same number of adolescents who chose to terminate their pregnancy. RESULTS: The intended pregnancy rate was 14.2%. Prior to a pregnancy continued to delivery, the most widely used contraceptive method was the male condom (50.9%), followed by oral combined contraceptives (28.3%); 18.9% of adolescents were not using any contraceptive method. After pregnancy, contraceptive implant was chosen by 70.8% of subjects (P < .001) and the oral combined contraceptives remained the second most frequent option (17.9%, P = .058). Comparing these results with Group 2, we found that the outcome of the pregnancy was the main factor in the choices that were made. Thus, after a pregnancy continued to delivery, adolescents prefer the use of LARC [78.4% vs 40.5%, OR: 5,958 - 95% (2.914-12.181), P < .001)], especially contraceptive implants [70.8% vs 38.7%, OR: 4.371 - 95% (2.224-8.591), P < .001], to oral combined contraceptives [17.9% vs 57.5%, OR: 0.118 - 95% CI (0.054-0.258), P < .001]. CONCLUSION:Adolescent pregnancy and its outcome constitute a factor of change in future contraceptive choice

El plutón Precámbrico-Cámbrico Inferior de Vila Nova (Centro de Portugal)

The Vila Nova pluton is a small, Pre-Variscan granitic body that intruded rocks of the Central Iberian Zone near the contact with the Ossa Morena Zone and is affected by several shear zones and faults. Its contact metamorphic aureole is constituted by micaschist with porphyroblasts in the outer zone and hornfels in the inner zone. Small metasedimentar xenoliths are dispersed all over the body. The pluton has a great mineralogical heterogeneity with pronounced variations in muscovite/biotite and plagioclase/microcline contents and is classified as granite, granodiorite or tonalite. It is a leucogranite, highly peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.31 – 1.64), magnesian and calc-alkaline to alkaline-calcic. The variation diagrams show curvilinear trends with silica. Eu/Eu* = 0.47 – 0.77 and there is a slight enrichment in LREE relative to HREE. The normalized diagrams indicated dominantly crustal granite, related to subduction. U-Pb isotopic data of zircon and monazite gives 540-542 Ma age.
