In the present paper, the authors analyze a translation process implemented within the framework of Relevance Theory using Adaptation Theory as a tool to ensure relevance in the translation of popular science texts. The paper is part of ongoing research dedicated to the development of methodology for translation of popular science texts on architecture, ICT, and economics, focused here on translating from English into Latvian. Recognizing that relevance in translation is a qualitative category, the authors suggest measuring it along two dimensions: the plane of content and the plane of expression. Having defined four categories of relevance, the authors have developed a grid that may be recommended as a guide in a translator’s decision-making process for selecting a particular adaptive strategy and translation method.Šiame straipsnyje vertimo procesas analizuojamas taikant relevantiškumo teorijos sistemą. Pasinaudodamos adaptacijos teorija kaip priemone užtikrinti relevantiškumą verčiant mokslo populiarinimo tekstus, straipsnio autorės kuria šių tekstų vertimo iš anglų kalbos į latvių kalbą metodiką. Straipsnyje pristatoma medžiaga yra šiuo metu vykdomo platesnio architektūros, IKT ir ekonomikos sričių mokslo populiarinimo tekstų vertimo tyrimo dalis. Laikomasi nuomonės, kad relevantiškumas vertime yra pamatuojama kategorija – autorės siūlo jį vertinti dviem pjūviais: pagal relevantiškumo laipsnį ir pagal relevantiškumo lygį, t. y. turinio ir raiškos lygmeniu. Tuo remdamosi autorės sukūrė tinklelį, kurį rekomenduoja taikyti vertėjui priimant sprendimus, kai reikia pasirinkti tam tikrą procedūrą ar vertimo būdą

Creation and Extension of Meaning in Professional Communication

    Get PDF
The application of different language resources in professional communication reveals the role of cognition in information processing, the interpretive function of language in knowledge construction, and the interrelation of linguistic and extra-linguistic environments. The aim of the present paper is to examine the development of the language of science and the way it is influenced by history, technology, media, genre, and culture. Integrating cognitive approach and pragmatic analysis, the ways of meaning creation and meaning extension have been studied in the popular science texts. Creative thinking and imagination are considered responsible for innovative, creative and insightful thought in general, and, sometimes, for a much wider range of mental activities

    Hyponymy in Text Organization Models

    No full text
Hierarchical taxonomy is one of the main models of text organisation which is widely applied in computational linguistics and at the same time it is of considerable relevance in translation studies. The study of hierarchical taxonomy helps define subclasses of different words and distinguish subordinate words from their hypernyms. Hypernymy is a relation of class to subclass. Thus a hypernym usually has a number of hyponyms. A hyponym is a word that belongs to and is equally ranked in a generic class. Hyponymy is considered to be one of the key mechanisms organizing the main semantic networks in the text. In the paper different models of representation of hyponymy are discussed and exemplified considering technical terminology as the medium for analysis in translation perspective

Pragmatic Aspects of Scientific Technical Text Analysis

    No full text
The present article focuses on the contemporary tendencies in the development of scientific technical vocabulary. The rapid scientific and technological progress results in the development of special language, which in turn requires the application of new methods of linguistic analysis and the study of pragmatic aspects of the scientific technical vocabulary. Analysis of contextual meaning of words they acquire in the process of meaning shift and extension is of considerable theoretical and practical importance. The results obtained may be used both as empirical data for creation and updating of linguistic corpora and as a medium for further study of meaning transfer and meaning extension in the process of development of the language in any specific scientific technical domain, thus contributing to a better understanding of these complex processes

Metaphoric Terms in Architecture and Civil Engineering: Taxonomy of the Concept 'Body'

    No full text
The present article focuses on the contemporary tendencies in the development of terminology in scientific and technical texts. Taking into consideration the processes undergoing in the development of contemporary technical texts in general and the genre of popular science in particular, metaphorical competence has become one of the most essential among the large number of linguistic and extra-linguistic competences necessary for a translator of specialized texts. The aim of the present article is to study the mechanism of semantic shifts based on the cognitive theory of metaphor. The research is conducted considering the taxonomy of the semantic field of the concept BODY, the elements of which are used as the basis of nomination of many metaphoric terms in Civil Engineering and Architecture. The processes of meaning formation and extension are illustrated in the article on the basis of contrastive analysis of terms used in popular-scientific texts in the English and Latvian languages
