From Sparse to Dense Functional Data: Phase Transitions from a Simultaneous Inference Perspective
We aim to develop simultaneous inference tools for the mean function of
functional data from sparse to dense. First, we derive a unified Gaussian
approximation to construct simultaneous confidence bands of mean functions
based on the B-spline estimator. Then, we investigate the conditions of phase
transitions by decomposing the asymptotic variance of the approximated Gaussian
process. As an extension, we also consider the orthogonal series estimator and
show the corresponding conditions of phase transitions. Extensive simulation
results strongly corroborate the theoretical results, and also illustrate the
variation of the asymptotic distribution via the asymptotic variance
decomposition we obtain. The developed method is further applied to body fat
data and traffic data
Online Local Differential Private Quantile Inference via Self-normalization
Based on binary inquiries, we developed an algorithm to estimate population
quantiles under Local Differential Privacy (LDP). By self-normalizing, our
algorithm provides asymptotically normal estimation with valid inference,
resulting in tight confidence intervals without the need for nuisance
parameters to be estimated. Our proposed method can be conducted fully online,
leading to high computational efficiency and minimal storage requirements with
space. We also proved an optimality result by an elegant
application of one central limit theorem of Gaussian Differential Privacy (GDP)
when targeting the frequently encountered median estimation problem. With
mathematical proof and extensive numerical testing, we demonstrate the validity
of our algorithm both theoretically and experimentally
Rethinking Dimensional Rationale in Graph Contrastive Learning from Causal Perspective
Graph contrastive learning is a general learning paradigm excelling at
capturing invariant information from diverse perturbations in graphs. Recent
works focus on exploring the structural rationale from graphs, thereby
increasing the discriminability of the invariant information. However, such
methods may incur in the mis-learning of graph models towards the
interpretability of graphs, and thus the learned noisy and task-agnostic
information interferes with the prediction of graphs. To this end, with the
purpose of exploring the intrinsic rationale of graphs, we accordingly propose
to capture the dimensional rationale from graphs, which has not received
sufficient attention in the literature. The conducted exploratory experiments
attest to the feasibility of the aforementioned roadmap. To elucidate the
innate mechanism behind the performance improvement arising from the
dimensional rationale, we rethink the dimensional rationale in graph
contrastive learning from a causal perspective and further formalize the
causality among the variables in the pre-training stage to build the
corresponding structural causal model. On the basis of the understanding of the
structural causal model, we propose the dimensional rationale-aware graph
contrastive learning approach, which introduces a learnable dimensional
rationale acquiring network and a redundancy reduction constraint. The
learnable dimensional rationale acquiring network is updated by leveraging a
bi-level meta-learning technique, and the redundancy reduction constraint
disentangles the redundant features through a decorrelation process during
learning. Empirically, compared with state-of-the-art methods, our method can
yield significant performance boosts on various benchmarks with respect to
discriminability and transferability. The code implementation of our method is

Impacts of air pollutants from rural Chinese households under the rapid residential energy transition
Rural residential energy consumption in China is experiencing a rapid transition towards clean energy, nevertheless, solid fuel combustion remains an important emission source. Here we quantitatively evaluate the contribution of rural residential emissions to PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) and the impacts on health and climate. The clean energy transitions result in remarkable reductions in the contributions to ambient PM2.5, avoiding 130,000 (90,000-160,000) premature deaths associated with PM2.5 exposure. The climate forcing associated with this sector declines from 0.057 ± 0.016 W/m2 in 1992 to 0.031 ± 0.008 W/m2 in 2012. Despite this, the large remaining quantities of solid fuels still contributed 14 ± 10 μg/m3 to population-weighted PM2.5 in 2012, which comprises 21 ± 14% of the overall population-weighted PM2.5 from all sources. Rural residential emissions affect not only rural but urban air quality, and the impacts are highly seasonal and location dependent
Efficacy and safety of intravitreal injection of conbercept for moderate to severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy
PurposeThis study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of intravitreal injection of conbercept (IVC) in treating moderate to severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), with or without accompanying diabetic macular edema.MethodsIn this longitudinal retrospective study, 35 patients (50 eyes) with moderate to severe NPDR and Diabetic Retinopathy Severity Scale (DRSS) scores between 43 and 53 were treated at the Department of Ophthalmology, First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, from October 2018 to January 2023. Treatment protocol included three monthly IVC injections followed by a pro re nata (PRN) regimen over a two-year follow-up period. Outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure, central macular thickness (CMT), extent of hard exudate (HE), and changes in DRSS scores. DRSS scores before and after treatment were analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Both systemic and ocular adverse events were meticulously documented to ascertain safety.ResultsFrom baseline to the final follow-up, the mean BCVA improved from 0.41 ± 0.39 to 0.23 ± 0.20 logMAR (p<0.05). The mean CMT decreased from 306.22 ± 77.40 to 297.97 ± 88.15 μm (p = 0.385). At 24 months, DRSS scores improved by ≥1 stage in 40 eyes (80%), ≥ 2 stages in 28 eyes (56%), ≥3 stages in 10 eyes (20%), and remained stable in 6 eyes (12%). The DRSS scores at each follow-up interval demonstrated statistically significant improvement from baseline (p<0.05). In 15 of 27 eyes (55.56%) with diabetic macular edema (DME), there was a significant reduction in the mean area of HE from baseline (p<0.05). No serious systemic adverse events were observed.ConclusionIVC is an effective and safe treatment for moderate to severe NPDR, demonstrating significant improvements in DRSS scores
Taxonomic and phylogenetic characterisations of six species of Pleosporales (in Didymosphaeriaceae, Roussoellaceae and Nigrogranaceae) from China
Pleosporales comprise a diverse group of fungi with a global distribution and significant ecological importance. A survey on Pleosporales (in Didymosphaeriaceae, Roussoellaceae and Nigrogranaceae) in Guizhou Province, China, was conducted. Specimens were identified, based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses using a dataset composed of ITS, LSU, SSU, tef1 and rpb2 loci. Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses were performed. As a result, three new species (Neokalmusia karka, Nigrograna schinifolium and N. trachycarpus) have been discovered, along with two new records for China (Roussoella neopustulans and R. doimaesalongensis) and a known species (Roussoella pseudohysterioides). Morphologically similar species and phylogenetically close taxa are compared and discussed. This study provides detailed information and descriptions of all newly-identified taxa
