    A Three-year Longitudinal Study of In-class Sustained Silent Reading with Taiwanese Vocational College Students

    This study examined the effects of three years of in-class sustained silent reading with a group of vocational college students in Taiwan. Readers outperformed comparisons on tests administered after one semester and increased their advantage on tests given at the end of the first year. The gap between the groups narrowed the second year, but readers maintained their superiority at the end of the second and third year. The initial gains were probably due, in part, to the Hawthorne Effect. It is likely that the progress made in the second and third year were more modest, because of external demands on students' time, which limited the amount of reading students could do outside of class. Overall, the results clearly support the practice of in-school self-selected reading

    Adopting IoT Technology to Optimize Intelligent Water Management

    Intelligent water management (IWM) has been used to study the supply and demand of tap water in Taiwan. This research aims to enhance existing and future water utility management. Leveraging the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology that connects sensors to a distributive infrastructure, the system detects leaks, assesses quality, monitors discharge, and manages assets of water utility. In this paper, we propose a prototype of urban intelligent water system by installing an intelligent water meter. Three steps are undertaken to demonstrate the IWM: 1) choose the way of data transmission; 2) establish communication equipment and generate cloud database; and 3) apply big data analyses and value-added applications.     The determination of levels of porosity is important in the engineering uses of graphite fiber/polymer matrix composites, since the interlaminar shear strength can be greatly reduced by excessive porosity [1]. Research in making nondestructive evaluations using ultrasonics as the probing energy has taken many directions. Hsu [2] has successfully modeled the frequency dependent attenuation to predict porosity levels in composites. Kline [3] has extended the work of Hashsin and Rosen [4] to determine the porosity and fiber volume fraction of composites by solving for the elastic coefficients of the composite structure. The propagation of leaky Lamb waves [5] has also been used to model porosity levels

    Prescription characteristics of Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu-Tang in pain management: a population-based study using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan

    Objective: To explore the prevalence and distinctive features of Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu-Tang (XFZYT) prescriptions by analyzing the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to identify the specific medical problems for which XFZYT is prescribed.Methods: This nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study included 109,073 XFZYT users and 532,848 XFZYT non-users among Chinese herbal product (CHP) users in NHIRD. Chi-squared tests were used to analyze disparities between the XFZYT user and XFZYT non-user cohorts, and the mean age was evaluated using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Logistic regression was used to compute the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).Results: XFZYT was frequently used to treat pain. The top five conditions for which the Taiwanese traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners would prescribe XFZYT were chest pain; headache; myalgia and myositis; lumbago; and neuralgia, neuritis, and radiculitis.Conclusion: This study represents an inaugural comprehensive survey conducted on the utilization of XFZYT prescriptions among patients with diverse diseases. XFZYT is mostly used to treat pain conditions in Taiwan. Combined with the combination use of other CHPs, XFZYT is used to treat symptoms of the chest and respiratory system, soft tissue conditions, menstruation disorders, and joint and back discomfort. These results suggest that further clinical trials are warranted to verify the effects of XFZYT in pain management

    Diffusion Thermopower at Even Denominator Fractions

    We compute the electron diffusion thermopower at compressible Quantum Hall states corresponding to even denominator fractions in the framework of the composite fermion approach. It is shown that the deviation from the linear low temperature behavior of the termopower is dominated by the logarithmic temperature corrections to the conductivity and not to the thermoelectric coefficient, although such terms are present in both quantities.     Electron Glass in Ultrathin Granular Al Films at Low Temperatures

    Quench-condensed granular Al films, with normal-state sheet resistance close to 10 kΩ/□\Omega/\Box, display strong hysteresis and ultraslow, non-exponential relaxation in the resistance when temperature is varied below 300 mK. The hysteresis is nonlinear and can be suppressed by a dc bias voltage. The relaxation time does not obey the Arrhenius form, indicating the existence of a broad distribution of low energy barriers. Furthermore, large resistance fluctuations, having a 1/f-type power spectrum with a low-frequency cut-off, are observed at low temperatures. With decreasing temperature, the amplitude of the fluctuation increases and the cut-off frequency decreases. These observations combine to provide a coherent picture that there exists a new glassy electron state in ultrathin granular Al films, with a growing correlation length at low temperatures.Comment: RevTeX 3.1, 4 pages, 4 figures (EPS files) (Minor Additions
