    Modelling appearance and geometry from images

    Acquisition of realistic and relightable 3D models of large outdoor structures, such as buildings, requires the modelling of detailed geometry and visual appearance. Recovering these material characteristics can be very time consuming and needs specially dedicated equipment. Alternatively, surface detail can be conveyed by textures recovered from images, whose appearance is only valid under the originally photographed viewing and lighting conditions. Methods to easily capture locally detailed geometry, such as cracks in stone walls, and visual appearance require control of lighting conditions, which are usually restricted to small portions of surfaces captured at close range.This thesis investigates the acquisition of high-quality models from images, using simple photographic equipment and modest user intervention. The main focus of this investigation is on approximating detailed local depth information and visual appearance, obtained using a new image-based approach, and combining this with gross-scale 3D geometry. This is achieved by capturing these surface characteristics in small accessible regions and transferring them to the complete façade. This approach yields high-quality models, imparting the illusion of measured reflectance. In this thesis, we first present two novel algorithms for surface detail and visual appearance transfer, where these material properties are captured for small exemplars, using an image-based technique. Second, we develop an interactive solution to solve the problems of performing the transfer over both a large change in scale and to the different materials contained in a complete façade. Aiming to completely automate this process, a novel algorithm to differentiate between materials in the façade and associate them with the correct exemplars is introduced with promising results. Third, we present a new method for texture reconstruction from multiple images that optimises texture quality, by choosing the best view for every point and minimising seams. Material properties are transferred from the exemplars to the texture map, approximating reflectance and meso-structure. The combination of these techniques results in a complete working system capable of producing realistic relightable models of full building façades, containing high-resolution geometry and plausible visual appearance.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Towards a strategy for malaria in pregnancy in Afghanistan: analysis of clinical realities and women's perceptions of malaria and anaemia.

    BACKGROUND: Afghanistan has some of the worst maternal and infant mortality indicators in the world and malaria is a significant public health concern. Study objectives were to assess prevalence of malaria and anaemia, related knowledge and practices, and malaria prevention barriers among pregnant women in eastern Afghanistan. METHODS: Three studies were conducted: (1) a clinical survey of maternal malaria, maternal anaemia, and neonatal birthweight in a rural district hospital delivery-ward; (2) a case-control study of malaria risk among reproductive-age women attending primary-level clinics; and (3) community surveys of malaria and anaemia prevalence, socioeconomic status, malaria knowledge and reported behaviour among pregnant women. RESULTS: Among 517 delivery-ward participants (1), one malaria case (prevalence 1.9/1000), 179 anaemia cases (prevalence 346/1000), and 59 low-birthweight deliveries (prevalence 107/1000) were detected. Anaemia was not associated with age, gravidity, intestinal parasite prevalence, or low-birthweight at delivery. Among 141 malaria cases and 1010 controls (2), no association was found between malaria infection and pregnancy (AOR 0.89; 95 % CI 0.57-1.39), parity (AOR 0.95; 95 % CI 0.85-1.05), age (AOR 1.02; 95 % CI 1.00-1.04), or anaemia (AOR 1.00; 95 % CI 0.65-1.54). Those reporting insecticide-treated net usage had 40 % reduced odds of malaria infection (AOR 0.60; 95 % CI 0.40-0.91). Among 530 community survey participants (3), malaria and anaemia prevalence were 3.9/1000 and 277/1000 respectively, with 34/1000 experiencing severe anaemia. Despite most women having no formal education, malaria knowledge was high. Most expressed reluctance to take malaria preventive medication during pregnancy, deeming it potentially unsafe. CONCLUSIONS: Given the low malaria risk and reported avoidance of medication during pregnancy, intermittent preventive treatment is hard to justify or implement. Preventive strategy should instead focus on long-lasting insecticidal nets for all pregnant women

    Rietveld refinement of KLaTiO4 from X-ray powder data

    Potassium lanthanum titanate(IV), KLaTiO4, has been synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. It crystallizes isotypically with the NaLnTiO4 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Y and Lu) family. Five of the six atoms in the asymmetric unit (one K, one La, one Ti and two O atoms) are situated on sites with 4mm symmetry, whereas one O atom has 2mm. site symmetry. The crystal structure can be described as being composed of single layers of distorted corner-sharing TiO6 octa­hedra extending parallel to (001). The layers are alternately separated by K+ and La3+ cations along [001]. The coordination number of both K+ and La3+ cations is nine, resulting in distorted KO9 and LaO9 polyhedra

    Lect2 deficiency is characterised by altered cytokine levels and promotion of intestinal tumourigenesis

    Leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2 (Lect2) is a chemokine-like chemotactic factor that has been identified as a downstream target of the Wnt signalling pathway. Whilst the primary function of Lect2 is thought to be in modulating the inflammatory process, it has recently been implicated as a potential inhibitor of the Wnt pathway. Deregulation of the Wnt pathway, often due to loss of the negative regulator APC, is found in ~80% of colorectal cancer (CRC). Here we have used the ApcMin/+Lect2−/− mouse model to characterise the role of Lect2 in Wnt-driven intestinal tumourigenesis. Histopathological, immunohistochemical, PCR and flow cytometry analysis were employed to identify the role of Lect2 in the intestine. The ApcMin/+Lect2−/− mice had a reduced mean survival and a significantly increased number of adenomas in the small intestine with increased severity. Analysis of Lect2 loss indicated it had no effect on the Wnt pathway in the intestine but significant differences were observed in circulating inflammatory markers, CD4+ T cells, and T cell lineage-specification factors. In summary, in the murine intestine loss of Lect2 promotes the initiation and progression of Wnt-driven colorectal cancer. This protection is performed independently of the Wnt signalling pathway and is associated with an altered inflammatory environment during Wnt-driven tumorigenesis

    Lithium calcium niobium oxide (2/1.5/3/10), Li2Ca1.5Nb3O10, has been synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. Its structure consists of triple-layer perovskite slabs of corner-sharing NbO6 octa­hedra inter­leaved with lithium ions; Ca cations partially occupy the perovskite A sites at 75% occupancy probability. All eight atoms in the asymmetric unit are on special positions: one Nb atom has site symmetry 4/mmm; the second Nb, both K, the Sr and two O atoms have site symmetry 4mm; the remaining two O atoms have site symmetries 2mm. and mmm., respectively
