    Neueren SchĂ€tzungen zufolge leiden bis zu 15 Prozent der bundesdeutschen Bevölkerung unter klinisch bedeutsamen Schlafstörungen. Die "Internationale Klassifikation der Schlafstörungen" (ICSD-R) umfasst insgesamt 88 Störungen, die sich vier Oberkategorien zuordnen lassen: "Dyssomnien" (Schlafstörungen, die entweder durch Ein- oder Durchschlafstörungen oder ĂŒbermĂ€ĂŸige SchlĂ€frigkeit gekennzeichnet sind), "Parasomnien" (zum Beispiel Schlafwandeln oder Sprechen im Schlaf), "Schlafstörungen bei körperlichen oder psychiatrischen Erkrankungen" sowie "Vorgeschlagene Schlafstörungen" (diagnostische Kategorien, die derzeit noch nĂ€her erforscht werden)

    The Process-Outcome Mindfulness Effects in Trainees (PrOMET) study: protocol of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial

    Background: Mindfulness has its origins in an Eastern Buddhist tradition that is over 2500 years old and can be defined as a specific form of attention that is non-judgmental, purposeful, and focused on the present moment. It has been well established in cognitive-behavior therapy in the last decades, while it has been investigated in manualized group settings such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. However, there is scarce research evidence on the effects of mindfulness as a treatment element in individual therapy. Consequently, the demand to investigate mindfulness under effectiveness conditions in trainee therapists has been highlighted. Methods/Design: To fill in this research gap, we designed the PrOMET Study. In our study, we will investigate the effects of brief, audiotape-presented, session-introducing interventions with mindfulness elements conducted by trainee therapists and their patients at the beginning of individual therapy sessions in a prospective, randomized, controlled design under naturalistic conditions with a total of 30 trainee therapists and 150 patients with depression and anxiety disorders in a large outpatient training center. We hypothesize that the primary outcomes of the session-introducing intervention with mindfulness elements will be positive effects on therapeutic alliance (Working Alliance Inventory) and general clinical symptomatology (Brief Symptom Checklist) in contrast to the session-introducing progressive muscle relaxation and treatment-as-usual control conditions. Treatment duration is 25 therapy sessions. Therapeutic alliance will be assessed on a session-to-session basis. Clinical symptomatology will be assessed at baseline, session 5, 15 and 25. We will conduct multilevel modeling to address the nested data structure. The secondary outcome measures include depression, anxiety, interpersonal functioning, mindful awareness, and mindfulness during the sessions. Discussion: The study results could provide important practical implications because they could inform ideas on how to improve the clinical training of psychotherapists that could be implemented very easily; this is because there is no need for complex infrastructures or additional time concerning these brief session-introducing interventions with mindfulness elements that are directly implemented in the treatment sessions.     Systems biological and mechanistic modelling of radiation-induced cancer

    This paper summarises the five presentations at the First International Workshop on Systems Radiation Biology that were concerned with mechanistic models for carcinogenesis. The mathematical description of various hypotheses about the carcinogenic process, and its comparison with available data is an example of systems biology. It promises better understanding of effects at the whole body level based on properties of cells and signalling mechanisms between them. Of these five presentations, three dealt with multistage carcinogenesis within the framework of stochastic multistage clonal expansion models, another presented a deterministic multistage model incorporating chromosomal aberrations and neoplastic transformation, and the last presented a model of DNA double-strand break repair pathways for second breast cancers following radiation therapy

    Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder – A qualitative study on patients’ experiences

    BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the first-line treatment for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, not all of them achieve remission on a longterm basis. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) represents a new 8-week group therapy program whose effectiveness has been demonstrated in various mental disorders, but has not yet been applied to patients with OCD. The present pilot study aimed to qualitatively assess the subjective experiences of patients with OCD who participated in MBCT. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 patients suffering from OCD directly after 8 sessions of a weekly MBCT group program. Data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Participants valued the treatment as helpful in dealing with their OCD and OCD-related problems. Two thirds of the patients reported a decline in OCD symptoms. Benefits included an increased ability to let unpleasant emotions surface and to live more consciously in the present. However, participants also discussed several problems. CONCLUSION: The data provide preliminary evidence that patients with OCD find aspects of the current MBCT protocol acceptable and beneficial. The authors suggest to further explore MBCT as a complementary treatment strategy for OCD

    Quantifizierung von Emissionen in der Rinderhaltung

    Emissionen der Tierhaltung unterliegen verschiedenen Einflussparametern sowie jahreszeitlichen Schwankungen. Neben der Tierart spielen die Lebendmasse der Tiere, das Außenklima und die Verfahrensgestaltung - insbesondere der LĂŒftung - eine entscheidende Rolle. Besonders schwierig erweist sich die Bestimmung des Luftvolumenstromes bei frei gelĂŒfteten StĂ€llen. Im durchgefĂŒhrten Projekt wurden dazu verschiedene Methoden verglichen. Gleichzeitig fand eine Erfassung emissionsrelevanter Konzentrationen von Gasen, Geruch und Staub in zwei StĂ€llen mit unterschiedlichen Aufstallungsverfahren statt. Dabei wurde nachgewiesen, dass Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Systemen vorhanden sind

    Vestibular role of KCNQ4 and KCNQ5 K+ channels revealed by mouse models

    The function of sensory hair cells of the cochlea and vestibular organs depends on an influx of K+ through apical mechanosensitive ion channels and its subsequent removal over their basolateral membrane. The KCNQ4 (Kv7.4) K+ channel, which is mutated in DFNA2 human hearing loss, is expressed in the basal membrane of cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs) where it may mediate K+ efflux. Like the related K+ channel KCNQ5 (Kv7.5), KCNQ4 is also found at calyx terminals ensheathing type I vestibular hair cells where it may be localized pre- or postsynaptically. Making use of Kcnq4-/- mice lacking KCNQ4, as well as Kcnq4dn/dn and Kcnq5dn/dn mice expressing dominant negative channel mutants, we now show unambiguously that in adult mice both channels reside in postsynaptic calyx-forming neurons, but cannot be detected in the innervated hair cells. Accordingly whole-cell currents of vestibular hair cells did not differ between genotypes. Neither Kcnq4-/-, Kcnq5dn/dn nor Kcnq4-/-/Kcnq5dn/dn double mutant mice displayed circling behavior found with severe vestibular impairment. However, a milder form of vestibular dysfunction was apparent from altered vestibulo-ocular reflexes in Kcnq4-/-/Kcnq5dn/dn and Kcnq4-/- mice. The larger impact of KCNQ4 may result from its preferential expression in central zones of maculae and cristae, which are innervated by phasic neurons that are more sensitive than the tonic neurons predominantly present in the surrounding peripheral zones where KCNQ5 is found. The impact of postsynaptic KCNQ4 on vestibular function may be related to K+ removal and modulation of synaptic transmission.Fil: Spitzmaul, Guillermo Federico.
