    International Usability, Design Guidelines and Effectiveness of a World Wide Web-Based Instructional Program for High School Students in a Cross-Culture Learning Environment

    The recent growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) has resulted in a vast array of on-line courseware and educational Web sites. Unfortunately, as a large percentage of this information is written in English, non-English speakers are unable to access it. Information written in other languages is likewise unavailable to many native English speakers. Therefore, in order to maximize the usefulness of educational material on the Web, it is necessary to design and implement cross-cultural, bilingual or multilingual Web sites and instructional programs. This study was designed to contribute to the area of bilingual learning on the Web. The researcher developed and evaluated three types of mathematics courseware: an English-only version, a Japanese-only version, and a bilingual version. While both the bilingual and English-only courseware enabled Japanese students with a basic knowledge of English to learn both quadratic equations and mathematical terms in English, the research found that the bilingual version was the most effective courseware for learning both mathematics and English simultaneously. Formative and summative evaluations were conducted in order to improve the program and determine the effectiveness of the bilingual courseware. As the courseware was implemented and evaluated, design guidelines were generated and the issue of courseware usability was explored

    Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Senior Victims of Tsunami-Affected Areas in Southern Sri Lanka

    Background: On 26 December 2004, a large earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra, and a devastating tsunami struck surrounding countries. Sri Lanka was seriously affected, with more than 31,000 deaths and 4,000 people missing. Objective: To elucidate the relationship between factors of tsunami-related exposure and mental health conditions among the senior residents of tsunami-affected areas in southern Sri Lanka. Subjects: A total of 90 subjects (43 men, 47 women) aged 60 years or older who were living in the Matara district at the time of the tsunami attack. Methods: A survey by interview using a structured questionnaire was conducted in 2008. The collected information included demographic factors, tsunami-related exposure and mental health conditions. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was used to assess their post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Results: The median of the IES-R score was significantly higher in those who were situated at home; those who saw anyone the dead or injured; those whose evacuations were delayed; those whose family member or friend was injured; those who were injured; those who lost their children, spouse or family members; those whose family member was missing; those who lost livelihood, compared with those who were not or those who did not. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that younger age and loss of or injury to family members due to the tsunami were significantly associated with an increase in IES-R score. Conclusion: The results indicate that tsunami-related exposures have affected elderly survivors\u27 mental health

    Warm and Dense Molecular Gas in the N159 Region: 12CO J=4-3 and 13CO J=3-2 Observations with NANTEN2 and ASTE

    New 12CO J=4-3 and 13CO J=3-2 observations of the N159 region in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been made. The 12CO J=4-3 distribution is separated into three clumps. These new measurements toward the three clumps are used in coupled calculations of molecular rotational excitation and line radiation transfer, along with other transitions of the 12CO as well as the isotope transitions of 13CO. The temperatures and densities are determined to be ~70-80K and ~3x10^3 cm-3 in N159W and N159E and ~30K and ~1.6x10^3 cm-3 in N159S. These results are compared with the star formation activity. The N159E clump is associated with embedded cluster(s) as observed at 24 micron and the derived high temperature is explained as due to the heating by these sources. The N159E clump is likely responsible for a dark lane in a large HII region by the dust extinction. The N159W clump is associated with embedded clusters mainly toward the eastern edge of the clump only. These clusters show offsets of 20"-40" from the 12CO J=4-3 peak and are probably responsible for heating indicated by the derived high temperature. The N159W clump exhibits no sign of star formation toward the 12CO J=4-3 peak position and its western region. We suggest that the N159W peak represents a pre-star-cluster core of ~105M_sol which deserves further detailed studies. Note that recent star formation took place between N159W and N159E as indicated by several star clusters and HII regions, while the natal molecular gas toward the stars have already been dissipated by the ionization and stellar winds of the OB stars. The N159S clump shows little sign of star formation as is consistent with the lower temperature and somewhat lower density. The N159S clump is also a candidate for future star formation

    Deviation from tri-bimaximal mixing and flavor symmetry breaking in a seesaw type A4 model

    We have studied the contribution of higher order corrections of the flavor symmetry breaking in the A4A_4 seesaw model with the supersymmetry. Taking account of possible higher dimensional mass operators, we predict the deviation from the tri-bimaximal lepton mixing for both normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses. We have found that the value of sin22θ23\sin^2 2\theta_{23} is larger than 0.96 and the upper bound of sin2θ13\sin^2\theta_{13} is 0.01. We have also examined the flavor changing neutral current of leptons from the soft SUSY breaking in slepton masses and A-terms within the framework of supergravity theory. We construct simple models with smaller numbers of flavon fields and free parameters, such that we have predictions among lepton masses and mixing angles.     Effects of inorganic mercury and methylmercury on osteoclasts and osteoblasts in the scales of the marine teleost as a model system of bone

    To evaluate the effects of inorganic mercury (InHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) on bone metabolism in a marine teleost, the activity of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as indicators of such activity in osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively, were examined in scales of nibbler fish (Girella punctata). We found several lines of scales with nearly the same TRAP and ALP activity levels. Using these scales, we evaluated the influence of InHg and MeHg. TRAP activity in the scales treated with InHg (10-5 and 10-4 M) and MeHg (10-6 to 10-4 M) during 6 hrs of incubation decreased significantly. In contrast, ALP activity decreased after exposure to InHg (10-5 and 10-4 M) and MeHg (10-6 to 10-4 M) for 18 and 36 hrs, although its activity did not change after 6 hrs of incubation. As in enzyme activity 6 hrs after incubation, mRNA expression of TRAP (osteoclastic marker) decreased significantly with InHg and MeHg treatment, while that of collagen (osteoblastic marker) did not change significantly. At 6 hrs after incubation, the mRNA expression of metallothionein, which is a metal-binding protein in osteoblasts, was significantly increased following treatment with InHg or MeHg, suggesting that it may be involved in the protection of osteoblasts against mercury exposure up to 6 hrs after incubation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the effects of mercury on osteoclasts and osteoblasts using marine teleost scale as a model system of bone. © 2014 Zoological Society of Japan

    Delithiation/lithiation behavior of LiNi<inf>0.5</inf>Mn<inf>1.5</inf>O<inf>4</inf> studied by in situ and ex situ <sup>6,7</sup>Li NMR spectroscopy

    Delithiation and lithiation behaviors of ordered spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 and disordered spinel LiNi0.4Mn1.6O4 were investigated by using in situ (in operando) 7Li NMR and ex situ 6Li MAS NMR spectroscopy. The in situ 7Li monitoring of the ordered spinel revealed a clear appearance and subsequent disappearance of a new signal from the well-defined phase Li0.5Ni0.5Mn1.5O4, suggesting the two-phase reaction processes among Li1.0Ni0.5Mn1.5O4, Li0.5Ni0.5Mn1.5O4, and Li0.0Ni0.5Mn1.5O4. Also, for the disordered spinel, Li0.5Ni0.4Mn1.6O4 was identified with a broad distribution in Li environment. High-resolution 6Li MAS NMR spectra were also acquired for the delithiated and lithiated samples to understand the detailed local structure around Li ions. We suggested that the nominal Li-free phase Li0.0Ni0.5Mn1.5O4 can accommodate a small amount of Li ions in its structure. The tetragonal phases Li2.0Ni0.5Mn1.5O4 and Li2.0Ni0.4Mn1.6O4, which occurred when the cell was discharged down to 2.0 V, were very different in the Li environment from each other. It is found that 6, 7Li NMR is highly sensitive not only to the Ni/Mn ordering in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 but also to the valence changes of Ni and Mn on charge-discharge process
