English existentials have received much attention in the generative literature as they exhibit certain properties that are difficult to capture under standard theoretical assumptions. The aim of this paper is to provide, in one fell swoop, an account of two pressing issues regarding English existentials: the non-canonical subject position, and their aspectual properties

'Technologists' alongside : impact on student understandings in technology : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

This research focuses on ascertaining the impact of technologists working alongside students; in particular the influence their involvement has on their understandings of and about Technology. The research was conducted within an interpretive paradigm. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using a mixed methods approach which consisted of a written questionnaire, followed by purposive interviews. The participants in the study were students in years 11 and 12 in 2005. Data from these participants were also gathered in 2006. The research findings identified that when students work alongside a technologist(s) to resolve problems embedded within real-life contexts, their concepts of technology and its purpose are enhanced. These findings also highlighted the importance of ensuring that student learning intentions (those learning outcomes which are planned) are shared between all parties involved in the learning environment (teachers, practicing technologists and students), so that interactions between students and technologists have a positive influence on student learning. This research concludes that the involvement of practicing technologists, in student learning in technology education, offers the potential to enhance student's technological practice and their learning in technology generally

A review of the potential local mechanisms by which exercise improves functional outcomes in intermittent claudication

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Background Intermittent claudication (IC) is a common condition which is associated with significant quality of life limitation. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines recommend a group-based supervised exercise program as the primary treatment option for claudication, based on clinical and cost effectiveness. This review aims to assess the mechanisms by which exercise improves outcomes in patients with IC. Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed were searched using the search strategy "claudication" [AND] "exercise" [AND] "mechanisms." Searches were limited from 1947 to October 2014. Only full-text articles published in the English language in adults (over 18 years of age) were eligible for the review. Any trial involving a nonsupervised exercise program was excluded. Abstracts identified by the database search were interrogated for relevance and citations from the shortlisted papers were hand searched for relevant references. Results The search yielded a total of 112 studies, of which 42 were duplicates. Forty-seven of the remaining 70 were deemed appropriate for inclusion in the review. Exercise is the first-line treatment for IC. Supervised exercise programs improve walking distances, endothelial and mitochondrial function, muscle strength, and endurance. Furthermore, it leads to a generalized improvement in cardiovascular fitness and overall quality of life. Conclusions The mechanism by which exercise improves outcome in claudicants is complicated and multifactorial. Further research is required in this area to fully elucidate the precise and predominant mechanisms and to assess whether targeted exercise program modification maximizes mechanism efficacy and patient outcome

Excerpt: The ship, El Perdido, was damaged during a storm which knocked out its main and backup power generators. Before the backup generator failed, Captain Miguel Gomez sent a distress call and the crew have been able to keep El Perdido a oat, but the ship is adrift in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. Thankfully, a US Coast Guard rescue operation is underway after receiving the distress call. The Coast Guard has El Perdido\u27s last known position and has mapped out the surface water velocities in this area as slope fields for longitude (x) and latitude (y), which they have updated using historical data and estimated predictions. Since the search grid is small enough, this curved region on the surface of the earth is relatively at
