Mathieu twining characters for K3
The analogue of the McKay-Thompson series for the proposed Mathieu group
action on the elliptic genus of K3 is analysed. The corresponding NS-sector
twining characters have good modular properties and satisfy remarkable
replication identities. These observations provide strong support for the
conjecture that the elliptic genus of K3 carries indeed an action of the

Relationship between fish size and otolith length for 63 species of fishes from the Eastern North Pacific Ocean
Otoliths commonly are used to determine the taxon, age, and size of fishes. This information is useful for population management, predator-prey studies, and archaeological research. The relationship between the length of a fish and the length of its otoliths remains unknown for many species of marine fishes in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, the relationships between fish length and fish weight, and between otolith length and fish length, were developed for 63 species of fishes caught in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. We also summarized similar relationships for 46 eastern North Pacific fish species reported in the literature. The relationship between fish length and otolith length was linear, and most of the variability was explained by a simple least-squares regression (r 2 > 0.700 for 45 of 63 species). The relationship between otolith length and fish length was not significantly different between left and right otoliths for all but one fish species. Images of otoliths from 77 taxa are included to assist in the identification of species. (PDF file contains 38 pages.
A parallel multistate framework for atomistic non-equilibrium reaction dynamics of solutes in strongly interacting organic solvents
We describe a parallel linear-scaling computational framework developed to
implement arbitrarily large multi-state empirical valence bond (MS-EVB)
calculations within CHARMM. Forces are obtained using the Hellman-Feynmann
relationship, giving continuous gradients, and excellent energy conservation.
Utilizing multi-dimensional Gaussian coupling elements fit to CCSD(T)-F12
electronic structure theory, we built a 64-state MS-EVB model designed to study
the F + CD3CN -> DF + CD2CN reaction in CD3CN solvent. This approach allows us
to build a reactive potential energy surface (PES) whose balanced accuracy and
efficiency considerably surpass what we could achieve otherwise. We use our PES
to run MD simulations, and examine a range of transient observables which
follow in the wake of reaction, including transient spectra of the DF
vibrational band, time dependent profiles of vibrationally excited DF in CD3CN
solvent, and relaxation rates for energy flow from DF into the solvent, all of
which agree well with experimental observations. Immediately following
deuterium abstraction, the nascent DF is in a non-equilibrium regime in two
different respects: (1) it is highly excited, with ~23 kcal mol-1 localized in
the stretch; and (2) not yet Hydrogen bonded to the CD3CN solvent, its
microsolvation environment is intermediate between the non-interacting
gas-phase limit and the solution-phase equilibrium limit. Vibrational
relaxation of the nascent DF results in a spectral blue shift, while relaxation
of its microsolvation environment results in a red shift. These two competing
effects result in a post-reaction relaxation profile distinct from that
observed when DF vibration excitation occurs within an equilibrium
microsolvation environment. The parallel software framework presented in this

Abundance, distribution, and habitat of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) off California, 1990−2003
Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are regularly seen off the U.S. West Coast, where they forage on jellyfish (Scyphomedusae) during summer and fall. Aerial line-transect surveys were conducted in neritic waters (<92 m depth) off central and northern California during 1990−2003, providing the first foraging population estimates for Pacific leatherback turtles. Males and females of about 1.1 to 2.1 m length were observed. Estimated abundance was linked to the Northern Oscillation Index and ranged from 12 (coefficient of variation [CV] =0.75) in 1995 to 379 (CV= 0.23) in 1990, averaging 178 (CV= 0.15). Greatest densities were found off central California, where oceanographic retention areas or upwelling shadows created favorable habitat for leatherback turtle prey. Results from independent telemetry studies have linked leatherback turtles off the U.S. West Coast to one of the two largest remaining Pacific breeding populations, at Jamursba Medi, Indonesia. Nearshore waters off California thus represent an important foraging region for the critically endangered Pacific leatherback turtle
Genetic distance predicts trait differentiation at the subpopulation but not the individual level in eelgrass, Zostera marina.
Ecological studies often assume that genetically similar individuals will be more similar in phenotypic traits, such that genetic diversity can serve as a proxy for trait diversity. Here, we explicitly test the relationship between genetic relatedness and trait distance using 40 eelgrass (Zostera marina) genotypes from five sites within Bodega Harbor, CA. We measured traits related to nutrient uptake, morphology, biomass and growth, photosynthesis, and chemical deterrents for all genotypes. We used these trait measurements to calculate a multivariate pairwise trait distance for all possible genotype combinations. We then estimated pairwise relatedness from 11 microsatellite markers. We found significant trait variation among genotypes for nearly every measured trait; however, there was no evidence of a significant correlation between pairwise genetic relatedness and multivariate trait distance among individuals. However, at the subpopulation level (sites within a harbor), genetic (FST) and trait differentiation were positively correlated. Our work suggests that pairwise relatedness estimated from neutral marker loci is a poor proxy for trait differentiation between individual genotypes. It remains to be seen whether genomewide measures of genetic differentiation or easily measured "master" traits (like body size) might provide good predictions of overall trait differentiation
Vlasov simulation in multiple spatial dimensions
A long-standing challenge encountered in modeling plasma dynamics is
achieving practical Vlasov equation simulation in multiple spatial dimensions
over large length and time scales. While direct multi-dimension Vlasov
simulation methods using adaptive mesh methods [J. W. Banks et al., Physics of
Plasmas 18, no. 5 (2011): 052102; B. I. Cohen et al., November 10, 2010,
http://meetings.aps.org/link/BAPS.2010.DPP.NP9.142] have recently shown
promising results, in this paper we present an alternative, the Vlasov Multi
Dimensional (VMD) model, that is specifically designed to take advantage of
solution properties in regimes when plasma waves are confined to a narrow cone,
as may be the case for stimulated Raman scatter in large optic f# laser beams.
Perpendicular grid spacing large compared to a Debye length is then possible
without instability, enabling an order 10 decrease in required computational
resources compared to standard particle in cell (PIC) methods in 2D, with
another reduction of that order in 3D. Further advantage compared to PIC
methods accrues in regimes where particle noise is an issue. VMD and PIC
results in a 2D model of localized Langmuir waves are in qualitative agreement

determine the anomaly of the zero-modes on the self-dual string and their

Far-infrared observations of young clusters embedded in the R Coronae Austrinae and RHO Ophiuchi dark clouds
Multicolor far infrared maps in two nearby dark clouds, R Coronae Austrinae and rho Ophiuchi, were made in order to investigate the individual contribution of low mass stars to the energetics and dynamics of the surrounding gas and dust. Emission from cool dust associated with five low mass stars in Cr A and four in rho Oph was detected; their far infrared luminosities range from 2 far infrared luminosities L. up to 40 far infrared luminosities. When an estimate of the bolometric luminosity was possible, it was found that typically more than 50% of the star's energy was radiated longward of 20 micrometers. meaningful limits to the far infrared luminosities of an additional eleven association members in Cr A and two in rho Oph were also obtained. The dust optical depth surrounding the star R Cr A appears to be asymmetric and may control the dynamics of the surrounding molecular gas. The implications of the results for the cloud energetics and star formation efficiency in these two clouds are discussed
The five-minute oscillations: What's left to be done
Current observational methods for studying these oscillations at large horizontal wavenumbers are discussed in detail and several two dimensional power spectra obtained with a CID camera on the main spectrograph of the McMath telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory are described. The best-resolved observations of the p-mode obtained at chromospheric elevations are also presented. Recent progress in studies of the p-modes at low wavenumbers with full-disk velocity detection schemes is summarized. These full-disk observations of radial and low-degree non-radial modes were shown to place severe constraints on the theoretical calculation of solar interior structure. Progress in making fully-consistent solar models which fit both the high- and low-wave number observations is described. Finally, the observational and theoretical improvements that are necessary for further progress in solar seismology are summarized
