Boosting Higgs pair production in the final state with multivariate techniques
The measurement of Higgs pair production will be a cornerstone of the LHC
program in the coming years. Double Higgs production provides a crucial window
upon the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and has a unique
sensitivity to the Higgs trilinear coupling. We study the feasibility of a
measurement of Higgs pair production in the final state at
the LHC. Our analysis is based on a combination of traditional cut-based
methods with state-of-the-art multivariate techniques. We account for all
relevant backgrounds, including the contributions from light and charm jet
mis-identification, which are ultimately comparable in size to the irreducible
QCD background. We demonstrate the robustness of our analysis strategy in
a high pileup environment. For an integrated luminosity of
ab, a signal significance of is obtained,
indicating that the final state alone could allow for the

Coherent vibrations of submicron spherical gold shells in a photonic crystal
Coherent acoustic radial oscillations of thin spherical gold shells of
submicron diameter excited by an ultrashort optical pulse are observed in the
form of pronounced modulations of the transient reflectivity on a subnanosecond
time scale. Strong acousto-optical coupling in a photonic crystal enhances the
modulation of the transient reflectivity up to 4%. The frequency of these
oscillations is demonstrated to be in good agreement with Lamb theory of free

Siting prisons, sighting communities: geographies of objection in a planning process
This paper reviews the planning process for a Scottish prison located near a former mining village. Analysing the letters of objection submitted by residents offers an opportunity to explore local views about prison and community and to relate these to the unique social and spatial history of the area. The planning process itself structured how residents were able to express themselves and defined what counted as a relevant objection. After deconstructing this process, the paper then restores and uses as a framework for analysis three geographies of objection stripped from local responses to the development proposal: the emotional, temporal, and spatial. Emotional expressions of objection added intensity and gave meaning to claims about the historical decline of the region and also conveyed a deep sense of the proposed building site as a lived space. Particular grounds of opposition—over fear of strangers, the fragility of a local orchid, and the pollution from mining—provide an opportunity to explore the complex nature of place meaning and community identity, ultimately leading to a conclusion that the meaning of place is always in flux. Low-Reynolds-number gravity-driven migration and deformation of bubbles near a free surface
International audienceWe investigate numerically the axisymmetric migration of bubbles toward a free surface, using a boundary-integral technique. Our careful numerical implementation allows to study the bubble(s) deformation and film drainage; it is benchmarked against several tests. The rise of one bubble toward a free surface is studied and the computed bubble shape compared with the results of Princen [J. Colloid Interface Sci. 18, 178 (1963)]. The liquid film between the bubble and the free surface is found to drain exponentially in time in full agreement with the experimental work of Debre'geas et al. [Science 279, 1704 (1998)]. Our numerical results also cast some light on the role played by the deformation of the fluid interfaces and it turns out that for weakly deformed interfaces (high surface tension or a tiny bubble) the film drainage is faster than for a large fluid deformation. By introducing one or two additional bubble(s) below the first one, we examine to which extent the previous trends are affected by bubble-bubble interactions. For instance, for a 2-bubble chain, decreasing the bubblebubble separation increases the deformation of the last bubble in the chain. Finally, the exponential drainage of the film between the free surface and the closest bubble is preserved, yet the drainage is enhanced
A transdiagnostic systematic review and meta-analysis of ketamine's anxiolytic effects
Background:Ketamine may be effective in treating symptoms of anxiety, but the time profile of ketamine’s anxiolytic effect is ill-defined. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the anxiolytic effect of ketamine at different time points across a range of clinical settings.Methods:Electronic databases were searched to capture randomised control trials measuring the anxiolytic effects of ketamine in contexts including mood disorders, anxiety disorders and chronic pain. Meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effects model. The correlations between (1) improvements in mean anxiety and depression scores, and (2) peak dissociation and improvements in mean anxiety scores were also assessed.Results:In all, 14 studies met inclusion criteria. Risk of bias was high in 11 studies. Ketamine significantly reduced anxiety scores compared to placebo at acute (<12 h; standard mean difference (SMD): −1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI) [−1.89, −0.44], p < 0.01), subacute (24 h; SMD: −0.44, 95% CI [−0.65, −0.22], p < 0.01) and sustained (7–14 days; SMD: −0.40, 95% CI [−0.63, −0.17], p < 0.01) time points. Exploratory analyses revealed improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms correlated at both subacute (R2 = 0.621, p = 0.035) and sustained time points (R2 = 0.773, p = 0.021). The relationship between peak dissociation and improvement in anxiety was not significant.Conclusions:Ketamine appears to offer rapid and sustained anxiety symptom relief across a range of clinical settings, with anxiolytic effects occurring within the first 12 h of administration and remaining effective for 1–2 weeks. Future studies could explore the effects of ketamine maintenance therapy on anxiety symptoms
Nanoantenna-enhanced ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy of a single gold nanoparticle
Optical nanoantennas are a novel tool to investigate previously unattainable
dimensions in the nanocosmos. Just like their radio-frequency equivalents,
nanoantennas enhance the light-matter interaction in their feed gap. Antenna
enhancement of small signals promises to open a new regime in linear and
nonlinear spectroscopy on the nanoscale. Without antennas especially the
nonlinear spectroscopy of single nanoobjects is very demanding. Here, we
present for the first time antenna-enhanced ultrafast nonlinear optical
spectroscopy. In particular, we utilize the antenna to determine the nonlinear
transient absorption signal of a single gold nanoparticle caused by mechanical
breathing oscillations. We increase the signal amplitude by an order of
magnitude which is in good agreement with our analytical and numerical models.
Our method will find applications in linear and nonlinear spectroscopy of
nanoobjects, ranging from single protein binding events via nonlinear tensor
elements to the limits of continuum mechanics
Cadmium accumulation in three contrasting New Zealand soils with the same phosphate fertilizer history
Cadmium (Cd) concentration in New Zealand (NZ) agricultural soils has increased due to phosphate fertilizer application, but it is not clear whether soils with different properties accumulate Cd at similar rates for given P loadings. Here, the distribution of Cd was measured in three soils: the well-drained Horotiu series (Orthic Allophanic Soil in NZ soil classification, Typic Hapludand in US soil taxonomy), poorly-drained Te Kowhai series (Orthic Gley Soil in NZ classification, Typic Humaquept in US soil taxonomy) and an intergrade between them, Bruntwood series (Impeded Allophanic Soil in NZ soil classification, Aquic Hapludand in US soil taxonomy). All three soils often occur in the same paddock with the same fertilizer history, but have differing drainage and mineralogical characteristics, permitting an assessment of the potential for varying accumulation/translocation of Cd in contrasting soil conditions. Thirty soil profiles from ten paddocks on a dairy farm near Hamilton, NZ, with a uniform fertilizer history were sampled to depth of 60 cm. The Cd concentration in topsoil (0–7.5 cm) samples (mean of 0.79 mg kg−1 ) was about 7–8 times greater than in deeper horizons (P b 0.001). No significant differences in Cd concentration or fractionation among the soil series were detected. Cluster analysis showed that Cd, phosphorus (P) and uranium (U) were highly correlated, consistent with a common source, most likely phosphate fertilizer. The absence of a difference in the Cd depth profiles in the three soils indicates that Cd was preferentially adsorbed to the topsoil and was not significantly mobilized by drainage in the soils. The lack of difference in Cd distribution between contrasting soil series supports the use of one Cd management system tool for all of these soils
Local and Regional Indian Summer Monsoon Precipitation Dynamics During Termination II and the Last Interglacial
To date Indian summer monsoon (ISM) dynamics have been assessed by changes in stalagmite δ18O. However, stalagmite δ18O is influenced by multiple environmental factors (e.g., atmospheric moisture transport, rainfall amount at the study site, and ISM seasonality), precluding simple and clear reconstructions of rainfall amount or variability. This study aims to disentangle these environmental factors by combining δ18O, δ44Ca, and elemental data from a stalagmite covering Termination II and the last interglacial from Mawmluh Cave, NE India, to produce a semiquantitative reconstruction of past ISM rainfall. We interpret δ18O as a mixed signal of rainfall source dynamics and rainfall amount and coupled δ44Ca and X/Ca ratios as indicators of local infiltration rate and prior calcite precipitation in the karst zone. The wettest conditions in our studied interval (135 and 100 kyrs BP; BP = before present, with the present being 1950 CE) occurred during Marine Isotope Stage 5e. Our multiproxy data set suggests a likely change in seasonal distribution of Marine Isotope Stage 5e rainfall compared to the Holocene; the wet season was longer with higher‐than‐modern dry season rainfall. Using the last interglacial as an analogue for future anthropogenic warming, our data suggest a more erratic ISM behavior in a warmer world
