    Releasing wind farm equity via post-construction yield analysis

    During pre-construction yield analysis, an extrapolated site wind regime is applied to a site model in order to produce estimated yield figures. However, once the site has been operational, many of the uncertainties involved in this modelling, such as electrical losses, wake losses, turbulence and power performance, may be resolved into measured operational parameters. This means that off-site anemometry may be directly related to power production on the site. In a post-construction yield analysis, the pre-construction figures are refined using actual operational data. This allows: a) The initial yield report figures to be reassessed in the light of wind farm performance, and b) The uncertainties associated with annual yield figures to be reduced and understood more fully. This increasing reduction in uncertainty allows improvements in financial modelling to take place over the operational life of the wind farm, releasing equity from the wind farm investmen

    Solving the BM Camelopardalis puzzle

    BM Camelopardalis (=12 Cam) is a chromospherically active binary star with a relatively large orbital eccentricity. Systems with large eccentricities usually rotate pseudosynchronously. However, BM Cam has been a puzzle since its observed rotation rate is virtually equal to its orbital period indicating synchronization. All available photometry data for BM Cam have been collected and analyzed. Two models of modulated ellipticity effect are proposed, one based on equilibrium tidal deformation of the primary star and the other on a dynamical tidal effect. When the starspot variability is removed from the data, the dynamical tidal model was the better approximation to the real physical situation. The analysis indicates that BM Cam is not rotating pseudosynchronously but rotating in virtual synchronism after all

    Dispersal of a Heron-Egret Rookery

    A rookery composed of an estimated 10,000 herons and egrets (family: Ardeidae) located in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas was successfully dispersed in the Spring of 1983. A diversified scaring program was planned and initiated prior to the onset of courtship display and nest building. The roost relocation was subsequently followed by habitat alteration procedures to make the 5-acre stand of primarily Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) unattractive as a future roosting site. Although no nesting occurred at the site in 1983, the lack of an early scaring program in the Spring of 1984 resulted in the uncleared portion of the area being used as a roost site.     Influence of Obstacle Location and Frequency on the Propagation of Premixed Flames

    Turbulent propagating premixed flames are encountered in spark ignition engines, gas turbines, industrial burners, as well as in vented gas explosions. In all these applications, the flame fronts interact with complex solid boundaries which not only distort the flame structure but directly affect the propagation rate in ways that are not yet fully understood. This thesis aims to provide both a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the link between overpressure, flame front wrinkling and turbulence levels generated in the propagating medium. This is an issue of importance for the provision of improved sub-models for the burning rates of premixed flames. An experimental chamber was constructed where controlled premixed flames were ignited from rest to propagate past solid obstacles and/or baffle plates strategically positioned in the chamber. Laser Doppler Anemometry was used to measure the velocity field and turbulence fields while pressure transducers were used to obtain pressure-time traces. In addition to this Laser-Induced Fluorescence of the Hydroxyl radical is was to image the flame front as it consumes the unburnt fuel captured in the re-circulation zone behind the main obstruction. The thesis reports on the effects of various parameters such as the inclusion of grids and obstructions, blockage ratio, and repeated obstacles to explore possible correlations between the pressure and the flow-fields. Pressure, velocity and LIF images were correlated and analysed to prove the significance of grid location and number on overall turbulence intensity. Corresponding flow field parameters such as flame front wrinkling, peak overpressure and RMS all combine to conclusively demonstrate their interaction and influence to turbulence intensity. By progressively positioning more grids further downstream, consequent rises in the flow field parameters and the establishment of positive trends indicates the overall significance of kernel development and flow disturbances in relation to turbulence generation

    The Mississippi Adequate Education Program: an Overview and Policy Proposal

    Historically, Mississippi is one of the lowest performing states when it comes to kindergarten-twelfth grade education. Mississippi also consistently has one of the lowest amounts of money dedicated to kindergarten-twelfth grade education. It has been suggested that there is a correlation between these two facts, but over the past twenty years, nothing has changed in the way that Mississippi funds education. The current model is written in the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, which allocates money to education based upon a per-year decision by the Mississippi Department of Education to take money from the general fund of the state\u27s budget. This has led to MAEP being fully funded only three times since its implementation in 1997. Despite efforts to revise the current funding model, the state continues to underfund education and rely on local taxes to supplement the low level of state funding. This study serves to investigate the way that the state funds education, evaluate whether or not the current system is working, and introduce a policy proposal that will provide Mississippi with a more consistent and adequate basis for education funding
