Economic Doctrines and Approaches to Climate Change Policy

    Get PDF
In climate change, as in all policy issues, economic philosophy has a significant influence on how people view both the problems and the solutions. For the first time, ITIF surveys four dominant schools of economic thought and analyzes how adherents approach policy options for climate change and energy policy. With climate change and major energy legislation stalled, maybe it is time to put aside fixed philosophical notions and take a practical look on ways to address climate change in an economically feasible way. The report reviews the principles and goals of each economic doctrine, and offers a critique of the advantages and limitations of each doctrine's contribution to addressing the challenge of climate change.Innovation; Economics; Climate Change; Public Policy

Urological Care of the Paralyzed Patient

The paraplegic injured during World War I had only a 10% chance of surviving the first year. Only 20% of the American paraplegics could even be evacuated. A great majority of the deaths were caused by urinary tract sepsis. Starting in the mid and late 1940\u27s, however, with the discovery of broad spectrum antibiotics, many of the early complications were eliminated and the survival rate greatly improved. Since 1946, over 2,000 patients have been admitted to the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital. This spinal cord injury service receives approximately 400-500 admissions per year with about 70 being new patients

This project documents and analyzes the preparation and execution of a bring your own device program implemented in a local affluent school district. The project looks at the implementation from a cost/benefit perspective, identifying the stated goals of the program and working to develop a method of measurement for evaluation. It examines the technical infrastructure upgrades and configuration required to ensure a smooth rollout. The project also examines bring your own device programs in several other industries, identifying the motivations and methods of measurement as means for developing recommendations based in experience

Seeking professional help for an eating disorder: the role of stigma, anticipated outcomes, and attitudes

    Get PDF
The perceived stigma, anticipated outcomes, and attitudes towards counseling may deter those with an eating disorder from seeking the help they need. Part 1 (N = 145) of a two-part study was conducted to examine the relationship between self-stigma and the anticipated outcomes (risks and benefits) associated with seeking counseling on attitudes toward counseling among those currently experiencing or at risk for an eating disorder. The results of multiple hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that self-stigma, anticipated risks, and anticipated benefits significantly predicted attitudes towards seeking help for people with disordered eating. In addition, self-stigma had a stronger relationship with men\u27s attitudes towards seeking help than women\u27s and anticipated benefits had a stronger relationship with women\u27s attitudes than men\u27s. Part 2 (N = 676) used a pretest posttest experimental design to measure the effects of an educational intervention hypothesized to improve attitudes, increase the anticipated benefits and lessen the self-stigma, public stigma, and the anticipated risks associated with seeking counseling for an eating disorder. Against predictions, repeated measures Analysis of Co-Variance (ANCOVA) demonstrated that the intervention had no significant effects on attitudes, self-stigma, anticipated risks, or anticipated benefits
