Role of Circulating Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 Measurement in Primary Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease Among Chinese Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has demonstrated beneficial effects on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. In cross-sectional studies, an association of raised circulating FGF21 levels with coronary heart disease (CHD) was found in some but not all studies. Here we investigated prospectively whether baseline serum FGF21 levels could predict incident CHD in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and no known cardiovascular diseases. METHODS AND RESULTS: Baseline serum FGF21 levels were measured in 3528 Chinese subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus recruited from the Hong Kong West Diabetes Registry. The role of baseline serum FGF21 levels in predicting incident CHD over a median follow-up of 3.8 years was analyzed using Cox regression analysis. Among 3528 recruited subjects without known cardiovascular diseases, 147 (4.2%) developed CHD over a mean follow-up of 4 years. Baseline serum log-transformed FGF21 levels were significantly higher in those who had incident CHD than those who did not (222.7 pg/mL [92.8-438.4] versus 151.1 pg/mL [75.6-274.6]; P<0.001). On multivariable Cox regression analysis, baseline serum FGF21 levels, using an optimal cutoff of 206.22 pg/mL derived from our study, independently predicted incident CHD (hazard ratio, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.10-2.19; P=0.013) and significantly improved net reclassification index and integrated discrimination improvement after adjustment for conventional cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated, for the first time, that serum FGF21 level is an independent predictor of incident CHD and might be usefully utilized as a biomarker for identifying type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects with raised CHD risk, for primary prevention.published_or_final_versio
The connection between superconducting phase correlations and spin excitations in YBaCuO: A magnetic field study
One of the most striking universal properties of the
high-transition-temperature (high-) superconductors is that they are all
derived from the hole-doping of their insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) parent
compounds. From the outset, the intimate relationship between magnetism and
superconductivity in these copper-oxides has intrigued researchers. Evidence
for this link comes from neutron scattering experiments that show the
unambiguous presence of short-range AF correlations (excitations) in cuprate
superconductors. Even so, the role of such excitations in the pairing mechanism
and superconductivity is still a subject of controversy. For
YBaCuO, where controls the hole-doping level, the most
prominent feature in the magnetic excitations spectra is the ``resonance''.
Here we show that for underdoped YBaCuO, where and
are below the optimal values, modest magnetic fields suppress the resonance
significantly, much more so for fields approximately perpendicular rather than
parallel to the CuO planes. Our results indicate that the resonance
measures pairing and phase coherence, suggesting that magnetism plays an
important role in the superconductivity of cuprates. The persistence of a field
effect above favors mechanisms with preformed pairs in the normal state
of underdoped cuprates.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, Nature (in press

Nitrogen doped-ZnO/n-GaN heterojunctions
Nitrogen-doped ZnO nanorods were prepared by electrodeposition using two different Zn precursors (zinc nitrate and zinc acetate), while all other growth conditions (dopant precursor, concentration, growth temperature, and bias) were identical. We have shown that the precursor used affects the properties of the ZnO nanorods, and that the presence of rectifying properties in n-GaN/N:ZnO heterojunctions is strongly related to the use of nitrate precursor for ZnO growth. The difference in the properties of ZnO obtained from two precursors is attributed to the differences in native defect and impurity concentrations, which could affect the electronic properties of the samples. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

Normal-State Spin Dynamics and Temperature-Dependent Spin Resonance Energy in an Optimally Doped Iron Arsenide Superconductor
The proximity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the phase
diagram of iron arsenides, the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling and the
"resonance peak" in the superconducting spin excitation spectrum have fostered
the hypothesis of magnetically mediated Cooper pairing. However, since most
theories of superconductivity are based on a pairing boson of sufficient
spectral weight in the normal state, detailed knowledge of the spin excitation
spectrum above the superconducting transition temperature Tc is required to
assess the viability of this hypothesis. Using inelastic neutron scattering we
have studied the spin excitations in optimally doped BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 (Tc = 25
K) over a wide range of temperatures and energies. We present the results in
absolute units and find that the normal state spectrum carries a weight
comparable to underdoped cuprates. In contrast to cuprates, however, the
spectrum agrees well with predictions of the theory of nearly antiferromagnetic
metals, without complications arising from a pseudogap or competing
incommensurate spin-modulated phases. We also show that the temperature
evolution of the resonance energy follows the superconducting energy gap, as
expected from conventional Fermi-liquid approaches. Our observations point to a
surprisingly simple theoretical description of the spin dynamics in the iron
arsenides and provide a solid foundation for models of magnetically mediated
superconductivity.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, and an animatio
Solution-based growth of ZnO nanorods for light-emitting devices: Hydrothermal vs. electrodeposition
ZnO nanorods have been grown by two inexpensive, solution-based, low-temperature methods: hydrothermal growth and electrodeposition. Heterojunction n-ZnO nanorods/p-GaN light-emitting diodes have been studied for different nanorod growth methods and different preparation of the seed layer. We demonstrate that both the nanorod properties and the device performance are strongly dependent on the growth method and seed layer. All the devices exhibit light emission under both forward and reverse bias, and the emission spectra can be tuned by ZnO nanorod deposition conditions. Electrodeposition of rods or a seed layer results in yellow emission, while conventional hydrothermal growth results in violet emission. © The Author(s) 2010. Effect of WeiJia on carbon tetrachloride induced chronic liver injury
Aim: To study the effect of WeiJia on chronic liver injury using carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4) induced liver injury animal model. Methods: Wista r rats weighing 180-220g were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group (Group A), CCl 4 induced liver injury control group (Group B) and CCl 4 induction with WeiJia treatment group (Group C). Each group consisted of 14 rats. Liver damage and fibrosis was induced by subcutaneous injection with 40% CCl 4 in olive oil at 3 mL/kg body weight twice a week for eight weeks for Groups B and C rats whereas olive oil was used for Group A rats. Starting from the third week, Group C rats also received daily intraperitoneal injection of WeiJia at a dose of 1.25 μg/kg body weight. Animals were sacrificed at the fifth week (4 male, 3 female), and eighth week (4 male, 3 female) respectively. Degree of fibrosis were measured and serological markers for liver fibrosis and function including hyaluronic acid (HA), type IV collagen (CIV), γ-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were determined. Alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry were also performed. Results: CCl 4 induction led to the damage of liver and development of fibrosis in Group B and Group C rats when compared to Group A rats. The treatment of WeiJia in Group C rats could reduce the fibrosis condition significantly compared to Group B rats. The effect could be observed after three weeks of treatment and was more obvious after eight weeks of treatment. Serum HA, CIV, ALT, AST and γ-GT levels after eight weeks of treatment for Group C rats were 58±22 μg/L (P 0.05) respectively, similar to normal control group (Group A), but significantly different from CCl 4 induced liver injury control group (Group B). An increase in PCNA and decrease in α-SMA expression level was also observed. Conclusion: WeiJia could improve liver function and reduce liver fibrosis which might be through the inhibition of stellate cell activity. © 2006 The WJG Press. Androgen deprivation therapy and fracture risk in Chinese patients with prostate carcinoma
OBJECTIVE: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) increases fracture risk in men with carcinoma of the prostate, but little is known about the fracture risk for different types of ADT. We studied the fracture risk amongst Chinese patients with carcinoma of the prostate prescribed different ADT regimens. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a single-centered observational study that involved 741 patients with carcinoma of the prostate from January 2001 to December 2011. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 5 years, 71.7% of the study cohort received ADT and the incidence rate of fracture was 8.1%. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that use of ADT was significantly associated with risk of incident fracture (Hazard Ratio [HR] 3.60; 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI] 1.41-9.23; p = 0.008), together with aged >75 years and type 2 diabetes. Compared with no ADT, all three types of ADT were independently associated with the risk of incident fracture: anti-androgen monotherapy (HR 4.47; 95% CI 1.47-13.7; p = 0.009), bilateral orchiectomy ± anti-androgens (HR 4.01; 95% CI 1.46-11.1; p = 0.007) and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists ± anti-androgens (HR 3.16; 95% CI 1.18-8.43; p = 0.022). However, there was no significant difference in the relative risks among the three types of ADT. CONCLUSIONS: Fracture risk increases among all types of ADT. Clinicians should take into account the risk-benefit ratio when prescribing ADT, especially in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.published_or_final_versio
