On the existence of finite-energy lumps in classic field theories
We show how the existence of non-trivial finite-energy time-dependent
classical lumps is restricted by a generalized virial theorem. For simple model
Lagrangians, bounds on energies follow.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; substantial change
No New Symmetries of the Vacuum Einstein Equations
In this note we examine some recently proposed solutions of the linearized
vacuum Einstein equations. We show that such solutions are {\it not} symmetries
of the Einstein equations, because of a crucial integrability condition.Comment: 9 pages, Te
Dynamical masses of quarks in quantum chromodynamics
Using Dyson-Schwinger equations we obtain an ultraviolet asymptotics for the
dynamical mass of quark in QCD. We also determine a numerical value for the \pi
meson decay constant f_\pi.Comment: Electronic version of the published paper, latex, 4 page
MSAT-X electronically steered phased array antenna system
A low profile electronically steered phased array was successfully developed for the Mobile Satellite Experiment Program (MSAT-X). The newly invented cavity-backed printed crossed-slot was used as the radiating element. The choice of this element was based on its low elevation angle gain coverage and low profile. A nineteen-way radial type unequal power divider and eighteen three-bit diode phase shifters constitute the beamformer module which is used to scan the beams electronically. A complete hybrid mode pointing system was also developed. The major features of the antenna system are broad coverage, low profile, and fast acquisition and tracking performance, even under fading conditions. Excellent intersatellite isolation (better than 26 dB) was realized, which will provide good quality mobile satellite communication in the future
Analytical results for the confinement mechanism in QCD_3
We present analytical methods for investigating the interaction of two heavy
quarks in QCD_3 using the effective action approach. Our findings result in
explicit expressions for the static potentials in QCD_3 for long and short
distances. With regard to confinement, our conclusion reflects many features
found in the more realistic world of QCD_4.Comment: 24 pages, uses REVTe
Quantum Hall States of Gluons in Quark Matter
We have recently shown that dense quark matter possesses a color
ferromagnetic phase in which a stable color magnetic field arises
spontaneously. This ferromagnetic state has been known to be Savvidy vacuum in
the vacuum sector. Although the Savvidy vacuum is unstable, the state is
stabilized in the quark matter. The stabilization is achieved by the formation
of quantum Hall states of gluons, that is, by the condensation of the gluon's
color charges transmitted from the quark matter. The phase is realized between
the hadronic phase and the color superconducting phase. After a review of
quantum Hall states of electrons in semiconductors, we discuss the properties
of quantum Hall states of gluons in quark matter in detail. Especially, we
evaluate the energy of the states as a function of the coupling constant. We
also analyze solutions of vortex excitations in the states and evaluate their
energies. We find that the states become unstable as the gauge coupling
constant becomes large, or the chemical potential of the quarks becomes small,
as expected. On the other hand, with the increase of the chemical potential,
the color superconducting state arises instead of the ferromagnetic state. We
also show that the quark matter produced by heavy ion collisions generates
observable strong magnetic field Gauss when it enters the
ferromagnetic phase.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
Non-perturbative improvement and renormalization of lattice operators
The Alpha Collaboration has proposed an optimal value for c_SW in the
Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action, chosen to remove O(a) effects. To measure
hadronic matrix elements to the same accuracy we need a method of finding O(a)
improved operators, and their renormalization constants. We determine the Z
factors by a non-perturbative method, measuring the matrix elements for single
quark states propagating through gauge fields in the Landau gauge. The data
show large effects coming from chiral symmetry breaking. This allows us to find
the improvement coefficients too, by requiring that the amount of chiral
symmetry breaking agrees with that predicted by the chiral Ward identities.Comment: 3 pages, Latex, 2 figures, epsf.sty and espcrc2.sty needed. Talk

Vertices and the CJT Effective Potential
The Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective potential is modified to include a
functional dependence on the fermion-gauge particle vertex, and applied to a
quark confining model of chiral symmetry breaking.Comment: 10 pages (latex), PURD-TH-93-1
Squeezed Gluon Condensate and Quark Confinement in the Global Color Model of QCD
We discuss how the presence of a squeezed gluon vacuum might lead to quark
confinement in the framework of the global colour model of QCD. Using reduced
phase space quantization of massive vector theory we construct a Lorentz
invariant and colourless squeezed gluon condensate and show that it induces a
permanent, nonlocal quark interaction (delta-function in 4-momentum space),
which according to Munczek and Nemirovsky might lead to quark confinement. Our
approach makes it possible to relate the strength of this effective confining
quark interaction to the strength of the physical gluon condensate.Comment: 18 pages LaTeX, to appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
