Inhomogeneous substructures hidden in random networks
We study the structure of the load-based spanning tree (LST) that carries the
maximum weight of the Erdos-Renyi (ER) random network. The weight of an edge is
given by the edge-betweenness centrality, the effective number of shortest
paths through the edge. We find that the LSTs present very inhomogeneous
structures in contrast to the homogeneous structures of the original networks.
Moreover, it turns out that the structure of the LST changes dramatically as
the edge density of an ER network increases, from scale free with a cutoff,
scale free, to a starlike topology. These would not be possible if the weights
are randomly distributed, which implies that topology of the shortest path is
correlated in spite of the homogeneous topology of the random network.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Bound on distributed entanglement
Using the convex-roof extended negativity and the negativity of assistance as
quantifications of bipartite entanglement, we consider the possible
remotely-distributed entanglement. For two pure states and
on bipartite systems and , we first show that the
possible amount of entanglement remotely distributed on the system by
joint measurement on the system is not less than the product of two
amounts of entanglement for the states and
in two-qubit and two-qutrit systems. We also provide some sufficient
conditions, for which the result can be generalized into higher-dimensional

Facet Formation in the Negative Quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Equation
The quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (QKPZ) equation with negative non-linear
term shows a first order pinning-depinning (PD) transition as the driving force
is varied. We study the substrate-tilt dependence of the dynamic transition
properties in 1+1 dimensions. At the PD transition, the pinned surfaces form a
facet with a characteristic slope as long as the substrate-tilt is
less than . When , the transition is discontinuous and the critical
value of the driving force is independent of , while the transition
is continuous and increases with when . We explain these
features from a pinning mechanism involving a localized pinning center and the

Short-term, medium-term and long-term effects of early parenting interventions in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review
INTRODUCTION: Parenting interventions during early childhood are known to improve various child development outcomes immediately following programme implementation. However, less is known about whether these initial benefits are sustained over time. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of parenting interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) that were delivered during the first 3 years of life and had completed a follow-up evaluation of the intervention cohort at least 1 year after the primary postintervention endpoint. We summarized intervention effects over time by child-level and parent-level outcomes as well as by timing of follow-up rounds in the short-term (1-3 years after programme completion), medium-term (4-9 years), and long-term (10+ years). We also conducted exploratory meta-analyses to compare effects on children's cognitive and behavioral development by these subgroups of follow-up rounds. RESULTS: We identified 24 articles reporting on seven randomised controlled trials of parenting interventions delivered during early childhood that had at least one follow-up study in seven LMICs. The majority of follow-up studies were in the short-term. Three trials conducted a medium-term follow-up evaluation, and only two trials conducted a long-term follow-up evaluation. Although trials consistently supported wide-ranging benefits on early child development outcomes immediately after programme completion, results revealed a general fading of effects on children's outcomes over time. Short-term effects were mixed, and medium-term and long-term effects were largely inconclusive. The exploratory meta-analysis on cognitive development found that pooled effects were significant at postintervention and in the short-term (albeit smaller in magnitude), but the effects were not significant in the medium-term and long-term. For behavioural development, the effects were consistently null over time. CONCLUSIONS: There have been few longer-term follow-up studies of early parenting interventions in LMICs. Greater investments in longitudinal intervention cohorts are needed in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of parenting interventions over the life course and to improve the design of future interventions so they can have greater potential for achieving and sustaining programme benefits over time

Rules for Computing Symmetry, Density and Stoichiometry in a Quasi-Unit-Cell Model of Quasicrystals
The quasi-unit cell picture describes the atomic structure of quasicrystals
in terms of a single, repeating cluster which overlaps neighbors according to
specific overlap rules. In this paper, we discuss the precise relationship
between a general atomic decoration in the quasi-unit cell picture atomic
decorations in the Penrose tiling and in related tiling pictures. Using these
relations, we obtain a simple, practical method for determining the density,
stoichiometry and symmetry of a quasicrystal based on the atomic decoration of
the quasi-unit cell taking proper account of the sharing of atoms between

Oxidation States of Graphene: Insights from Computational Spectroscopy
When it is oxidized, graphite can be easily exfoliated forming graphene oxide
(GO). GO is a critical intermediate for massive production of graphene, and it
is also an important material with various application potentials. With many
different oxidation species randomly distributed on the basal plane, GO has a
complicated nonstoichiometric atomic structure that is still not well
understood in spite of of intensive studies involving many experimental
techniques. Controversies often exist in experimental data interpretation. We
report here a first principles study on binding energy of carbon 1s orbital in
GO. The calculated results can be well used to interpret experimental X-ray
photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data and provide a unified spectral
assignment. Based on the first principles understanding of XPS, a GO structure
model containing new oxidation species epoxy pair and epoxy-hydroxy pair is
proposed. Our results demonstrate that first principles computational
spectroscopy provides a powerful means to investigate GO structure.Comment: accepted by J. Chem. Phy
Time-delayed Spatial Patterns in a Two-dimensional Array of Coupled Oscillators
We investigated the effect of time delays on phase configurations in a set of
two-dimensional coupled phase oscillators. Each oscillator is allowed to
interact with its neighbors located within a finite radius, which serves as a
control parameter in this study. It is found that distance-dependent
time-delays induce various patterns including traveling rolls, square-like and
rhombus-like patterns, spirals, and targets. We analyzed the stability
boundaries of the emerging patterns and briefly pointed out the possible
empirical implications of such time-delayed patterns.Comment: 5 Figure
Uric acid enhances longevity and endurance and protects the brain against ischemia
Among mammals, there is a positive correlation between serum uric acid (UA) levels and life span. Humans have high levels of UA because they lack a functional urate oxidase (UOX) enzyme that is present in shorter lived mammals. Here, we show that male and female mice with UOX haploinsufficiency exhibit an age-related elevation of UA levels, and that the life span of female but not male UOX+/− mice is significantly increased compared to wild-type mice. Serum UA levels are elevated in response to treadmill exercise in UOX+/− mice, but not wild-type mice, and the endurance of the UOX+/− mice is significantly greater than wild-type mice. UOX+/− mice exhibit elevated levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, reduced brain damage and improved functional outcome in a model of focal ischemic stroke. Levels of oxidative protein nitration and lipid peroxidation are reduced in muscle and brain tissues of UOX+/− mice under conditions of metabolic and oxidative stress (running in the case of muscle and ischemia in the case of the brain), consistent with prior evidence that UA can scavenge peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radical. Our findings reveal roles for UA in life span determination, endurance and adaptive responses to brain injury, and suggest novel approaches for protecting cells against injury and for optimizing physical performance.España, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte EX2009–091
