High precision Monte Carlo study of the 3D XY-universality class
We present a Monte Carlo study of the two-component model on the
simple cubic lattice in three dimensions. By suitable tuning of the coupling
constant we eliminate leading order corrections to scaling. High
statistics simulations using finite size scaling techniques yield
and , where the statistical and
systematical errors are given in the first and second bracket, respectively.
These results are more precise than any previous theoretical estimate of the
critical exponents for the 3D XY universality class.Comment: 13 page

Introduction: Ouyang has recently proposed hiatal surface area (HSA) calculation by multiplanar multislice computer tomography (MDCT) scan as a useful tool for planning treatment of hiatus defects with hiatal hernia (HH), with or without gastroesophageal reflux (MRGE). Preoperative upper endoscopy or barium swallow cannot predict the HSA and pillars conditions. Aim to asses the efficacy of MDCT’s calculation of HSA for planning the best approach for the hiatal defects treatment. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 25 patients, candidates to laparoscopic antireflux surgery as primary surgery or hiatus repair concomitant with or after bariatric surgery. Patients were analyzed preoperatively and after one-year follow-up by MDCT scan measurement of esophageal hiatus surface. Five normal patients were enrolled as control group. The HSA’s intraoperative calculation was performed after complete dissection of the area considered a triangle. Postoperative CT-scan was done after 12 months or any time reflux symptoms appeared. Results: (1) Mean HSA in control patients with no HH, no MRGE was cm2 and similar in non-complicated patients with previous LSG and cruroplasty. (2) Mean HSA in patients candidates to cruroplasty was 7.40 cm2. (3) Mean HSA in patients candidates to redo cruroplasty for recurrence was 10.11 cm2. Discussion. MDCT scan offer the possibility to obtain an objective measurement of the HSA and the correlation with endoscopic findings and symptoms. The preoperative information allow to discuss with patients the proper technique when a HSA[5 cm2 is detected. During the follow-up a correlation between symptoms and failure of cruroplasty can be assessed. Conclusions: MDCT scan seems to be an effective non-invasive method to plan hiatal defect treatment and to check during the follow-up the potential recurrence. Future research should correlate in larger series imaging data with intraoperative findings
Non Perturbative Renormalization Group, momentum dependence of -point functions and the transition temperature of the weakly interacting Bose gas
We propose a new approximation scheme to solve the Non Perturbative
Renormalization Group equations and obtain the full momentum dependence of
-point functions. This scheme involves an iteration procedure built on an
extension of the Local Potential Approximation commonly used within the Non
Perturbative Renormalization Group. Perturbative and scaling regimes are
accurately reproduced. The method is applied to the calculation of the shift
in the transition temperature of the weakly repulsive Bose gas, a
quantity which is very sensitive to all momenta intermediate between these two
regions. The leading order result is in agreement with lattice calculations,
albeit with a theoretical uncertainty of about 25%. The next-to-leading order
differs by about 10% from the best accepted result
Short distance behaviour of correlators in the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field
We study the spin-spin, spin-energy and energy-energy correlators in the 2d
Ising model perturbed by a magnetic field. We compare the results of a set of
high precision Montecarlo simulations with the predictions of two different
approximations: the Form Factor approach, based on the exact S-matrix
description of the model, and a short distance perturbative expansion around
the conformal point. Both methods give very good results, the first one
performs better for distances larger than the correlation length, while the
second one is more precise for distances smaller than the correlation length.
In order to improve this agreement we extend the perturbative analysis to the

Structure, regulation, and function of protein tyrosine phosphatases
The phosphorylation of tyrosyl residues in proteins is an essential aspect of many signal transduction events, including the control of both normal and neoplastic cell growth and proliferation. Since the earliest observations of tyrosine phosphorylation, it has been appreciated that this is a reversible process in which the net level of phosphate in a target substrate reflects the balance between the competing action of kinases and phosphatases. Thus, in cells transformed by temperature-sensitive mutants of Rous sarcoma virus, an elevation in the levels of phosphotyrosine is observed at the permissive temperature, at which the kinase is active; however, if the cells are shifted to the nonpermissive temperature, at which the kinase is inactivated, a rapid dephosphorylation of tyrosyl residues ensues due to the action of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases) (Sefton et al. 1980). Towards a fully automated computation of RG-functions for the 3- O(N) vector model: Parametrizing amplitudes
Within the framework of field-theoretical description of second-order phase
transitions via the 3-dimensional O(N) vector model, accurate predictions for
critical exponents can be obtained from (resummation of) the perturbative
series of Renormalization-Group functions, which are in turn derived
--following Parisi's approach-- from the expansions of appropriate field
correlators evaluated at zero external momenta.
Such a technique was fully exploited 30 years ago in two seminal works of
Baker, Nickel, Green and Meiron, which lead to the knowledge of the
-function up to the 6-loop level; they succeeded in obtaining a precise
numerical evaluation of all needed Feynman amplitudes in momentum space by
lowering the dimensionalities of each integration with a cleverly arranged set
of computational simplifications. In fact, extending this computation is not
straightforward, due both to the factorial proliferation of relevant diagrams
and the increasing dimensionality of their associated integrals; in any case,
this task can be reasonably carried on only in the framework of an automated
environment.
On the road towards the creation of such an environment, we here show how a
strategy closely inspired by that of Nickel and coworkers can be stated in
algorithmic form, and successfully implemented on the computer. As an
application, we plot the minimized distributions of residual integrations for
the sets of diagrams needed to obtain RG-functions to the full 7-loop level;
they represent a good evaluation of the computational effort which will be

Sex Differences in Long-Term Mortality and Functional Outcome After Rehabilitation in Patients With Severe Stroke
Objective: We sought to determine sex differences in outcomes in patients with severe stroke who had been admitted to inpatient rehabilitation.
Methods: We studied 1,316 patients aged 18 to 99 (mean 72) classified as case-mix groups 0108, 0109, and 0110 of the Medicare case-mix classification system. These groups encompass the most severe strokes. Three outcomes were analyzed: (1) 3-year mortality from admission to rehabilitation; (2) combined outcome of transfer to acute care or death within 90 days from admission to rehabilitation; (3) functional outcome, including proportional recovery in motor functioning and good functional outcome as defined by achievement of a Functional Independence Measure (FIM)-motor score ≥65 points at discharge. Multivariable regression analyses were used to assess sex-difference in each outcome between women and men. The covariates examined included age, marital status, comorbidities, time from stroke onset to rehabilitation admission <30 days, ischemic stroke, dysphagia, neglect, motor FIM score at admission, and cognitive FIM score at admission.
Results: Kaplan-Meier estimated 3-year mortality rate was 20.7% in women and 22.0% in men. The crude hazard ratio (HR) of death for women compared with men was 0.94 (95% CI 0.74–1.20). After adjustment for significant covariates, the HR of 3-year mortality was 0.73 (95% CIs 0.56–0.96; p = 0.025). Comorbidity, including diabetes, anemia, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, significantly increased mortality risk by 49–88%. The incidence of the combined outcome was 8.3% in women and 8.4% in men. The crude HR of the combined end-point for women compared with men was 1.05 (95% CI 0.72–1.53). After adjustment for significant covariates, the HR was 0.95 (95% CIs 0.65–1.40; p = 0.810). Likewise, no significant difference in proportional recovery or in the rate of achievement of a good functional outcome between women and men was observed.
Conclusion: Among patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation after severe stroke, women and men had comparable crude mortality rates at 3 years. After multivariable adjustment, however, women had lower mortality risk. No sex-differences in the risk of being transferred to acute care or dying within 90 days from admission to rehabilitation or in responsiveness to rehabilitation were observed
Critical renormalized coupling constants in the symmetric phase of the Ising models
Using a novel finite size scaling Monte Carlo method, we calculate the four,
six and eight point renormalized coupling constants defined at zero momentum in
the symmetric phase of the three dimensional Ising system. The results of the
2D Ising system that were directly measured are also reported. Our values of
the six and eight point coupling constants are significantly different from
