Warming Up Density Functional Theory
Density functional theory (DFT) has become the most popular approach to
electronic structure across disciplines, especially in material and chemical
sciences. Last year, at least 30,000 papers used DFT to make useful predictions
or give insight into an enormous diversity of scientific problems, ranging from
battery development to solar cell efficiency and far beyond. The success of
this field has been driven by usefully accurate approximations based on known
exact conditions and careful testing and validation. In the last decade,
applications of DFT in a new area, warm dense matter, have exploded. DFT is
revolutionizing simulations of warm dense matter including applications in
controlled fusion, planetary interiors, and other areas of high energy density
physics. Over the past decade or so, molecular dynamics calculations driven by
modern density functional theory have played a crucial role in bringing
chemical realism to these applications, often (but not always) with excellent
agreement with experiment. This chapter summarizes recent work from our group
on density functional theory at non-zero temperatures, which we call thermal
DFT. We explain the relevance of this work in the context of warm dense matter,
and the importance of quantum chemistry to this regime. We illustrate many
basic concepts on a simple model system, the asymmetric Hubbard dimer
Glycated hemoglobin and incident type 2 diabetes in singaporean Chinese adults: The Singapore Chinese Health Study
Background: The American Diabetes Association recently included glycated hemoglobin in the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, but research on the utility of this biomarker in Southeast Asians is scant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between percent HbA1c and incident diabetes in an Asian population of adult men and women without reported diabetes. Methods: Data analysis of 5,770 men and women enrolled in the Singapore Chinese Health Study who provided a blood sample at the follow-up I visit (1999-2004) and had no cancer and no reported history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease events. Diabetes was defined as self-report of physician diagnosis, identified at the follow-up II visit (2006-2010). Results: Hazard ratios (and 95%confidence intervals) for incident diabetes by 5 categories of HbA1c were estimated with Cox regression models and continuous HbA1c with cubic spline analysis. Compared to individuals with an HbA1c ≤ 5.7% (≤39 mmol/mol), individuals with HbA1c 5.8-5.9% (40-41 mmol/mol), 6.0-6.1% (42-43 mmol/mol), 6.2-6.4% (44-47 mmol/mol), and ≥ 6.5% (≥48 mmol/mol) had significantly increased risk for incident diabetes during followup. In cubic spline analysis, levels below 5.7% HbA1c were not significantly associated with incident diabetes. Conclusions: Our study found a strong and graded association with HbA1c 5.8% and above with incident diabetes in Chinese men and women
Exposure of pregnant rats to cigarette-smoke condensate causes glomerular abnormalities in offspring
Background: Higher blood pressure and albuminuria are found in offspring of mothers who smoke during pregnancy. Whether or not kidney development is affected by maternal smoking is unknown. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to twice-daily cigarette-smoke and nicotine condensate (1 mg/kg) or vehicle at day 10 of pregnancy until delivery. Results: Exposed offspring did not differ from control offspring with respect to body weight, kidney weight, albuminuria, and creatinine clearance. Both male and female offspring had higher tail-plethysmographic blood pressures and lower mean glomerular volume, podocyte, mesangial-cell, and endothelial-cell number, compared to control offspring. Conclusions: The data document that prenatal exposure to cigarette-smoke condensate containing nicotine influences normal kidney development and could predispose to higher blood pressures later in life. Electrical Stimulation Modulates High γ Activity and Human Memory Performance.
Direct electrical stimulation of the brain has emerged as a powerful treatment for multiple neurological diseases, and as a potential technique to enhance human cognition. Despite its application in a range of brain disorders, it remains unclear how stimulation of discrete brain areas affects memory performance and the underlying electrophysiological activities. Here, we investigated the effect of direct electrical stimulation in four brain regions known to support declarative memory: hippocampus (HP), parahippocampal region (PH) neocortex, prefrontal cortex (PF), and lateral temporal cortex (TC). Intracranial EEG recordings with stimulation were collected from 22 patients during performance of verbal memory tasks. We found that high γ (62-118 Hz) activity induced by word presentation was modulated by electrical stimulation. This modulatory effect was greatest for trials with poor memory encoding. The high γ modulation correlated with the behavioral effect of stimulation in a given brain region: it was negative, i.e., the induced high γ activity was decreased, in the regions where stimulation decreased memory performance, and positive in the lateral TC where memory enhancement was observed. Our results suggest that the effect of electrical stimulation on high γ activity induced by word presentation may be a useful biomarker for mapping memory networks and guiding therapeutic brain stimulation
Response function analysis of excited-state kinetic energy functional constructed by splitting k-space
Over the past decade, fundamentals of time independent density functional
theory for excited state have been established. However, construction of the
corresponding energy functionals for excited states remains a challenging
problem. We have developed a method for constructing functionals for excited
states by splitting k-space according to the occupation of orbitals. In this
paper we first show the accuracy of kinetic energy functional thus obtained. We
then perform a response function analysis of the kinetic energy functional
proposed by us and show why method of splitting the k-space could be the method
of choice for construction of energy functionals for excited states.Comment: 11 page
Noncommutative Conformally Coupled Scalar Field Cosmology and its Commutative Counterpart
We study the implications of a noncommutative geometry of the minisuperspace
variables for the FRW universe with a conformally coupled scalar field. The
investigation is carried out by means of a comparative study of the universe
evolution in four different scenarios: classical commutative, classical
noncommutative, quantum commutative, and quantum noncommutative, the last two
employing the Bohmian formalism of quantum trajectories. The role of
noncommutativity is discussed by drawing a parallel between its realizations in
two possible frameworks for physical interpretation: the NC-frame, where it is
manifest in the universe degrees of freedom, and in the C-frame, where it is
manifest through theta-dependent terms in the Hamiltonian. As a result of our
comparative analysis, we find that noncommutative geometry can remove
singularities in the classical context for sufficiently large values of theta.
Moreover, under special conditions, the classical noncommutative model can
admit bouncing solutions characteristic of the commutative quantum FRW
universe. In the quantum context, we find non-singular universe solutions
containing bounces or being periodic in the quantum commutative model. When
noncommutativity effects are turned on in the quantum scenario, they can
introduce significant modifications that change the singular behavior of the
universe solutions or that render them dynamical whenever they are static in
the commutative case. The effects of noncommutativity are completely specified
only when one of the frames for its realization is adopted as the physical one.

How Mistimed and Unwanted Pregnancies Affect Timing of Antenatal Care Initiation in three Districts in Tanzania
Early antenatal care (ANC) initiation is a doorway to early detection and management of potential complications associated with pregnancy. Although the literature reports various factors associated with ANC initiation such as parity and age, pregnancy intentions is yet to be recognized as a possible predictor of timing of ANC initiation. Data originate from a cross-sectional household survey on health behaviour and service utilization patterns. The survey was conducted in 2011 in Rufiji, Kilombero and Ulanga districts in Tanzania on 910 women of reproductive age who had given birth in the past two years. ANC initiation was considered to be early only if it occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy gestation. A recently completed pregnancy was defined as mistimed if a woman wanted it later, and if she did not want it at all the pregnancy was termed as unwanted. Chisquare was used to test for associations and multinomial logistic regression was conducted to examine how mistimed and unwanted pregnancies affect timing of ANC initiation. Although 49.3% of the women intended to become pregnant, 50.7% (34.9% mistimed and 15.8% unwanted) became pregnant unintentionally. While ANC initiation in the 1st trimester was 18.5%, so was 71.7% and 9.9% in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that ANC initiation in the 2nd trimester was 1.68 (95% CI 1.10‒2.58) and 2.00 (95% CI 1.05‒3.82) times more likely for mistimed and unwanted pregnancies respectively compared to intended pregnancies. These estimates rose to 2.81 (95% CI 1.41‒5.59) and 4.10 (95% CI 1.68‒10.00) respectively in the 3rd trimester. We controlled for gravidity, age, education, household wealth, marital status, religion, district of residence and travel time to a health facility. Late ANC initiation is a significant maternal and child health consequence of mistimed and unwanted pregnancies in Tanzania. Women should be empowered to delay or avoid pregnancies whenever they need to do so. Appropriate counseling to women, especially those who happen to conceive unintentionally is needed to minimize the possibility of delaying ANC initiation.\u
