    Direct Observation of the Fourth Star in the Zeta Cancri System

    Direct imaging of the zeta Cnc system has resolved the fourth star in the system, which is in orbit around zeta Cnc C. The presence of the fourth star has been inferred for many years from irregularities in the motion of star C, and recently from C's spectroscopic orbit. However, its mass is close to that of C, making its non-detection puzzling. Observing at wavelengths of 1.2, 1.7, and 2.2 microns with the adaptive-optics system of the CFHT, we have obtained images which very clearly reveal star D and show it to have the color of an M2 star. Its brightness is consonant with its being two M stars, which are not resolved in our observations but are likely to be in a short-period orbit, thereby accounting for the large mass and the difficulty of detection at optical wavelengths, where the magnitude difference is much larger. The positions and colors of all four stars in the system are reported and are consistent with the most recent astrometric observations.Comment: 7 pages including 3 tables, 1 figure; To appear in PAS

    Do Childhood Vaccines Have Non-Specific Effects on Mortality

    A recent article by Kristensen et al. suggested that measles vaccine and bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine might\ud reduce mortality beyond what is expected simply from protection against measles and tuberculosis. Previous reviews of the potential effects of childhood vaccines on mortality have not considered methodological features of reviewed studies. Methodological considerations play an especially important role in observational assessments, in which selection factors for vaccination may be difficult to ascertain. We reviewed 782 English language articles on vaccines and childhood mortality and found only a few whose design met the criteria for methodological rigor. The data reviewed suggest that measles vaccine delivers its promised reduction in mortality, but there is insufficient evidence to suggest a mortality benefit above that caused by its effect on measles disease and its sequelae. Our review of the available data in the literature reinforces how difficult answering these considerations has been and how important study design will be in determining the effect of specific vaccines on all-cause mortality.\u

    Characterization of endospore-forming bacteria associated with entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis spp., and description of Paenibacillus nematophilus sp. nov.

    Endospore-forming bacteria were isolated from insect-pathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis spp., from three diverse geographical locations. Spindle-shaped sporangia of these bacteria adhere to the free-living infective stage of the nematode, which carries them to new insect hosts, where the bacterium reproduces. These isolates were characterized based on phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties and 16S rRNA gene sequences. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene placed the isolates within the genus Paenibacillus. The isolates shared higher sequence similarities with each other (95.1-100%) than they did with any other named species within the genus (89.2-94%). Paenibacillus macquariensis, Paenibacillus azoreducens, Paenibacillus amylolyticus and Paenibacillus durus were among the species with highest sequence similarity to these isolates. The isolates shared a high degree of phenotypic similarity and were easily distinguished from closely related members of the genus. Anteiso-C15:0 and C16:0 were among the major fatty acid types and the DNA G + C content was approximately 44 mol% in all isolates. DNA-DNA similarity studies revealed genomic heterogeneity among the isolates, such that they are likely to represent more than one species. Two of the isolates (both from a Heterorhabditis megidis isolate from Estonia) are phenotypically distinguishable from the others and are proposed as a single species, Paenibacillus nematophilus sp. nov. The type strain for this novel species is NEM1aT (=DSM 13559T =NCIMB 13845T). The other isolates, although closely related to the proposed species, are likely to represent at least one, but most likely two, novel species

    Fractures of the proximal femur are one of the greatest challenges facing the medical community, constituting a heavy socioeconomic burden worldwide. Controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment for patients with unstable trochanteric proximal femoral fractures. The recognised treatment alternatives are extramedullary fixation usually with a sliding hip screw and intramedullary fixation with a cephalomedullary nail. Current evidence suggests that best results and lowest complication rates occur using a sliding hip screw. Complications in these difficult fractures are relatively common regardless of type of treatment. We believe that a novel device, the X-Bolt dynamic plating system, may offer superior fixation over a sliding hip screw with lower reoperation risk and better function. We therefore propose to investigate the clinical effectiveness of the X-bolt dynamic plating system compared with standard sliding hip screw fixation within the framework of a the larger WHiTE (Warwick Hip Trauma Evaluation) Comprehensive Cohort Study.     Finite temperature excitations of a trapped Bose gas

    We present a detailed study of the temperature dependence of the condensate and noncondensate density profiles of a Bose-condensed gas in a parabolic trap. These quantitites are calculated self-consistently using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation. Below the Bose-Einstein transition the excitation frequencies have a realtively weak temperature dependence even though the condensate is strongly depleted. As the condensate density goes to zero through the transition, the excitation frequencies are strongly affected and approach the frequencies of a noninteracting gas in the high temperature limit.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, 4 postscript figures.     Superfluidity of bosons on a deformable lattice

    We study the superfluid properties of a system of interacting bosons on a lattice which, moreover, are coupled to the vibrational modes of this lattice, treated here in terms of Einstein phonon model. The ground state corresponds to two correlated condensates: that of the bosons and that of the phonons. Two competing effects determine the common collective soundwave-like mode with sound velocity vv, arising from gauge symmetry breaking: i) The sound velocity v0v_0 (corresponding to a weakly interacting Bose system on a rigid lattice) in the lowest order approximation is reduced due to reduction of the repulsive boson-boson interaction, arising from the attractive part of phonon mediated interaction in the static limit. ii) the second order correction to the sound velocity is enhanced as compared to the one of bosons on a rigid lattice when the the boson-phonon interaction is switched on due to the retarded nature of phonon mediated interaction. The overall effect is that the sound velocity is practically unaffected by the coupling with phonons, indicating the robustness of the superfluid state. The induction of a coherent state in the phonon system, driven by the condensation of the bosons could be of experimental significance, permitting spectroscopic detections of superfluid properties of the bosons. Our results are based on an extension of the Beliaev - Popov formalism for a weakly interacting Bose gas on a rigid lattice to that on a deformable lattice with which it interacts.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, to appear in Phys.     The Highly Miniaturised Radiation Monitor

    We present the design and preliminary calibration results of a novel highly miniaturised particle radiation monitor (HMRM) for spacecraft use. The HMRM device comprises a telescopic configuration of active pixel sensors enclosed in a titanium shield, with an estimated total mass of 52 g and volume of 15 cm3^3. The monitor is intended to provide real-time dosimetry and identification of energetic charged particles in fluxes of up to 108^8 cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} (omnidirectional). Achieving this capability with such a small instrument could open new prospects for radiation detection in space.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure

    This paper studies the normalizability criterion for the one-loop wave function of the universe in a de Sitter background, when various unified gauge models are considered. It turns out that, in the absence of interaction between inflaton field and other matter fields, the supersymmetric version of such unified models is preferred.     The intermediate-mass star-forming core UYSO 1 has previously been found to exhibit intriguing features. While deeply embedded and previously only identified by means of its (sub-)millimeter emission, it drives two powerful, dynamically young, molecular outflows. Although the process of star formation has obviously started, the chemical composition is still pristine. We present Herschel PACS and SPIRE continuum data of this presumably very young region. The now complete coverage of the spectral energy peak allows us to precisely constrain the elevated temperature of 26 - 28 K for the main bulge of gas associated with UYSO1, which is located at the interface between the hot HII region Sh 2-297 and the cold dark nebula LDN 1657A. Furthermore, the data identify cooler compact far-infrared sources of just a few solar masses, hidden in this neighbouring dark cloud.Comment: accepted contribution for the forthcoming Herschel Special Issue of A&A, 5 pages (will appear as 4-page letter in the journal), 6 figure file
