Direct Observation of the Fourth Star in the Zeta Cancri System
Direct imaging of the zeta Cnc system has resolved the fourth star in the
system, which is in orbit around zeta Cnc C. The presence of the fourth star
has been inferred for many years from irregularities in the motion of star C,
and recently from C's spectroscopic orbit. However, its mass is close to that
of C, making its non-detection puzzling. Observing at wavelengths of 1.2, 1.7,
and 2.2 microns with the adaptive-optics system of the CFHT, we have obtained
images which very clearly reveal star D and show it to have the color of an M2
star. Its brightness is consonant with its being two M stars, which are not
resolved in our observations but are likely to be in a short-period orbit,
thereby accounting for the large mass and the difficulty of detection at
optical wavelengths, where the magnitude difference is much larger. The
positions and colors of all four stars in the system are reported and are
consistent with the most recent astrometric observations.Comment: 7 pages including 3 tables, 1 figure; To appear in PAS
Flueric-controller pneumatic stepping motor system
Nutating stepping motor consists of an output rotating gear and a nutating gear. A flueric logic circuit controls the nutating motor. The complete system constitutes a reliable, open loop actuator system with inherently high output stiffness, reasonable slewing speeds and small step size
Long-term material compatibility testing system
System includes procedure for hermetically sealing solid materials and fluids in glass ampoule and use of temperature-controlled facility containing sample holder, which permits sample containers to be retrieved safely and conveniently. Solid material and fluid are sealed within chemically-clean glass ampoule according to highly detailed procedure
Systematic review of the current status of cadaveric simulation for surgical training
Background:
There is growing interest in and provision of cadaveric simulation courses for surgical trainees. This is being driven by the need to modernize and improve the efficiency of surgical training within the current challenging training climate. The objective of this systematic review is to describe and evaluate the evidence for cadaveric simulation in postgraduate surgical training.
Methods:
A PRISMAâcompliant systematic literature review of studies that prospectively evaluated a cadaveric simulation training intervention for surgical trainees was undertaken. All relevant databases and trial registries were searched to January 2019. Methodological rigour was assessed using the widely validated Medical Education Research Quality Index (MERSQI) tool.
Results:
A total of 51 studies were included, involving 2002 surgical trainees across 69 cadaveric training interventions. Of these, 22 assessed the impact of the cadaveric training intervention using only subjective measures, five measured impact by change in learner knowledge, and 23 used objective tools to assess change in learner behaviour after training. Only one study assessed patient outcome and demonstrated transfer of skill from the simulated environment to the workplace. Of the included studies, 67 per cent had weak methodology (MERSQI score less than 10·7).
Conclusion:
There is an abundance of relatively lowâquality evidence showing that cadaveric simulation induces shortâterm skill acquisition as measured by objective means. There is currently a lack of evidence of skill retention, and of transfer of skills following training into the live operating theatre

Enhancing the heavy Higgs signal with jet-jet profile cuts
The jet-jet profile, or detailed manner, in which transverse energy and mass
are distributed around the jet-jet system resulting from the hadronic decay of
a boson in the process Higgs at a proton-proton collider energy of
40\tev is carefully examined. Two observables are defined that can be used to
help distinguish the -jet-jet signal from Higgs decay from the
``ordinary'' QCD background arising from the large transverse momentum
production of single bosons plus the associated jets. By making cuts on
these observables, signal to background enhancement factors greater than
can be obtained.Comment: 16 pages, Univ. Florida IFT-93-
What is the appropriate diagnostic evaluation of fibroids?
Although transvaginal sonography (TVS) has inconsistent sensitivity (0.21-1.00) and specificity (0.53-1.00), its cost-efficiency and noninvasiveness make it the best initial test for ruling in fibroid disease (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, based on expert opinion, a systematic review, and prospective studies). Sonohysterography (SHG) and hysteroscopy have superior sensitivity, specificity, and more discriminating positive and negative likelihood ratios for diagnosing fibroids than does TVS (SOR: B, systematic review). SHG is less painful, less invasive, and more cost-effective than hysteroscopy (SOR: B; single, prospective comparative study and cost comparison). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had comparable precision to TVS in a single study, but it is too expensive to be a good initial test for fibroids (SOR: C, expert opinion and an uncontrolled prospective study). One study reported a strong correlation between ultrasound and bimanual examination (SOR: C, retrospective case review)
The effect of surgical approach on the histology of the femoral head following resurfacing of the hip : analysis of retrieval specimens
Objectives: We aimed to determine the effect of surgical approach on the histology of the femoral head following resurfacing of the hip.
Methods: We performed a histological assessment of the bone under the femoral component taken from retrieval specimens of patients having revision surgery following resurfacing of the hip. We compared the number of empty lacunae in specimens from patients who had originally had a posterior surgical approach with the number in patients having alternative surgical approaches.
Results: We found a statistically significant increase in the percentage of empty lacunae in retrieval specimens from patients who had the posterior approach compared with other surgical approaches (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: This indicates that the vascular compromise that occurs during the posterior surgical approach does have long-term effects on the bone of the femoral head, even if it does not cause overt avascular necrosis
Planets in triple star systems--the case of HD188753
We consider the formation of the recently discovered ``hot Jupiter'' planet
orbiting the primary component of the triple star system HD188753. Although the
current outer orbit of the triple is too tight for a Jupiter-like planet to
have formed and migrated to its current location, the binary may have been much
wider in the past. We assume here that the planetary system formed in an open
star cluster, the dynamical evolution of which subsequently led to changes in
the system's orbital parameters and binary configuration. We calculate cross
sections for various scenarios that could have led to the multiple system
currently observed, and conclude that component A of HD188753 with its planet
were most likely formed in isolation to be swapped in a triple star system by a
dynamical encounter in an open star cluster. We estimate that within 500pc of
the Sun there are about 1200 planetary systems which, like Hd188753, have
orbital parameters unfavorable for forming planets but still having a planet,
making it quite possible that the HD188753 system was indeed formed by a
dynamical encounter in an open star cluster.Comment: ApJ Letters in pres
