DEALING WITH MESSINESS AND UNCERTAINTY IN PRACTITIONER RESEARCH: THE NATURE OF PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH
This article reports on the experiences and perceptions of Kâ12 teachers as they engaged in a participatory action research (PAR) project, Science Across the Curriculum. Although the experiences and professional learning of two of the project participants are highlighted, the challenges that all participants experienced as they conceptualâ ized and implemented action research are also reported. The author concludes that messiness and uncertainty are inherent and necessary elements of action research and that these elements need to be explicit for the benefit of those who engage in and facilitate PAR. Design and synthesis of conformationally constrained ligands for Grb2 SH2 binding and thermodynamic evaluation and the development of a diversity oriented synthesis of 2-arylpiperidines
The ways in which torsional strain in the bound form of a ligand affects the energetics of protein binding are poorly understood. In order to study this feature of protein-ligand interactions, a conformationally constrained ligand for Grb2 SH2 containing a 1,1,2 trisubstituted cyclopropane was designed, and the synthesis of this ligand attempted. Additionally, a novel iminium ion formation/cyclization cascade was applied to the synthesis of a library of 2-arylpiperidines with varying aryl group substitution, and nitrogen atom functionalization. This strategy should allow further access to chemical space already identified as containing potential therapeutics and tool compounds for biological interrogation.Chemistr
My Dead Mother
O ye children of Christian nurture, ye sons and daughters of Christian parentage, now wandering from the way in which ye were taught, if there yet remains a spark in you of filial love, of loyalty to the name you bear and to your father\u27s God, shall not the memory of your pious parents\u27 faith kindle that spark to a living, spreading flame?https://place.asburyseminary.edu/ecommonsatsdigitalresources/1106/thumbnail.jp
Examining the Nature of TheoryâPractice Relationships in Initial Teacher Education: A Canadian Case Study
In this case study, the authors examined how theory practice relationships were conceptualized and enacted in a new teacher preparation program. As well, the issues and tensions associated with theoryâpractice dynamics were explored. More specifically, the authors explored two questions: (a) What is the nature of theoryâpractice relationships in a new teacher preparation program? (b) What tensions will arise as theoryâpractice relationships are manifested in this new teacher preparation program? Through the analysis of a number of qualitative data sets, insights are shared about program design, practices, andpedagogy, as well as the perspectives of teacher educators and teacher candidates on the nature of theoryâpractice relationships in their teacher preparation programs. Implications for teacher educators and teacher preparation are discussed
Views on and Practices of Integrating Theory and Practice in Teacher Education Programs in Atlantic Canada
The need for and lack of integration of theory and practice in initial teacher education programs has been discussed as a central issue for teacher education. This article reports on a study that surveyed university-based teacher educators in Atlantic Canada on their perspectives regarding how theory and practice can be integrated, how they and the programs they work in integrate theory and practice, and what challenges they perceive for the integration of theory and practice in their own teaching and the teacher education programs within which they work.
Evaluation of Recombinant Factor VIIa Treatment for Massive Hemorrhage in Patients with Multiple Traumas
Background: Recent studies and case reports have shown that recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) treatment is effective for reversing coagulopathy and reducing blood transfusion requirements in trauma patients with life-threatening hemorrhage. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of rFVIIa treatment on clinical outcomes and cost effectiveness in trauma patients. Methods: Between January 2007 and December 2010, we reviewed the medical records of patients who were treated with rFVIIa (N=18) or without rFVIIa (N=36) for life-threatening hemorrhage due to multiple traumas at the Emergency Department of Pusan National University Hospital in Busan, Korea. We reviewed patient demographics, baseline characteristics, initial vital signs, laboratory test results, and number of units transfused, and then analyzed clinical outcomes and 24-hr and 30-day mortality rates. Thromboembolic events were monitored in all patients. Transfusion costs and hospital stay costs were also calculated. Results: In the rFVIIa-treated group, laboratory test results and clinical outcomes improved, and the 24-hr mortality rate decreased compared to that in the untreated group; however, 30-day mortality rate did not differ between the groups. Thromboembolic events did not occur in both groups. Transfusion and hospital stay costs in the rFVIIa-treated group were cost effective; however, total treatment costs, including the cost of rFVIIa, were not cost effective. Conclusions: In our study, rFVIIa treatment was shown to be helpful as a supplementary drug to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the 24-hr mortality rate, transfusion and hospital stay costs, and transfusion requirements in trauma patients with life-threatening hemorrhage
