Spin-Dependent Structure Functions of Real and Virtual Photons

The implications of the positivity constraint, g1γ(P2)(x,Q2)F1γ(P2)(x,Q2)|g_1^{\gamma(P^2)}(x,Q^2)| \leq F_1^{\gamma(P^2)}(x,Q^2), on the presently unknown spin--dependent structure function g1γ(P2)(x,Q2)g_1^{\gamma(P^2)}(x,Q^2) of real and virtual photons are studied at scales Q2P2Q^2\gg P^2 where longitudinally polarized photons dominate physically relevant cross sections. In particular it is shown how to implement the physical constraints of positivity and continuity at P2=0P^2=0 in NLO calculations which afford a nontrivial choice of suitable (DIS) factorization schemes related to g1γg_1^{\gamma} and F1γF_1^{\gamma} and appropriate boundary conditions for the polarized parton distributions of real and virtual photons. The predictions of two extreme `maximal' and `minimal' saturation scenarios are presented and compared with results obtained within the framework of a simple quark `box' calculation expected to yield reasonable estimates in the not too small regions of xx and P2P^2.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX, 12 figure

The Kinetic Interpretation of the DGLAP Equation, its Kramers-Moyal Expansion and Positivity of Helicity Distributions

    Get PDF
According to a rederivation - due to Collins and Qiu - the DGLAP equation can be reinterpreted (in leading order) in a probabilistic way. This form of the equation has been used indirectly to prove the bound Δf(x,Q)<f(x,Q)|\Delta f(x,Q)| < f(x,Q) between polarized and unpolarized distributions, or positivity of the helicity distributions, for any QQ. We reanalize this issue by performing a detailed numerical study of the positivity bounds of the helicity distributions. To obtain the numerical solution we implement an x-space based algorithm for polarized and unpolarized distributions to next-to-leading order in αs\alpha_s, which we illustrate. We also elaborate on some of the formal properties of the Collins-Qiu form and comment on the underlying regularization, introduce a Kramers-Moyal expansion of the equation and briefly analize its Fokker-Planck approximation. These follow quite naturally once the master version is given. We illustrate this expansion both for the valence quark distribution qVq_V and for the transverse spin distribution h1h_1.Comment: 38 pages, 27 figures, Dedicated to Prof. Pierre Ramond for his 60th birthda

Resummed QCD Power Corrections to Nuclear Shadowing

We calculate and resum a perturbative expansion of nuclear enhanced power corrections to the structure functions measured in deeply inelastic scattering of leptons on a nuclear target. Our results for the Bjorken xx-, Q2Q^2- and AA-dependence of nuclear shadowing in F2A(x,Q2)F_2^A(x,Q^2) and the nuclear modifications to FLA(x,Q2)F_L^A(x,Q^2), obtained in terms of the QCD factorization approach, are consistent with the existing data. We demonstrate that the low-Q2Q^2 behavior of these data and the measured large longitudinal structure function point to a critical role for the power corrections when compared to other theoretical approaches.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, uses RevTeX 4. Shadowing Effects on the Nuclear Suppression Factor, R_dAu, in d+Au Interactions

We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high transverse momentum hadrons in deuteron-nucleus collisions. We calculate the charged hadron spectra to leading order using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We obtain the d+Au to pp ratio both in minimum bias collisions and as a function of centrality. The minimum bias results agree reasonably well with the BRAHMS data while the calculated centrality dependence underestimates the data and is a stronger function of p_T than the data indicate.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, final version, Phys. Kinetic description of charmonium production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We study the evolution of charmonia as they collide with the constituents of the fireball produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The latter evolves in a manner controlled by the equation of state as given by lattice QCD, and is constructed in such a way that the observed hadronic spectra are correctly reproduced. A kinetic description of charmonium interactions with both quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom allows to study in detail the evolution in different regimes, controlled by collision energy, kinematics and geometry. The data collected at the CERN-SPS accelerator are well described and new estimates for J/psi production at BNL-RHIC are presented.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 13 .eps figure

On the jet spectrum in nucleus-nucleus interactions

We derive the inclusive transverse spectrum of minijets in nuclear collisions at very high energies by assuming that the nuclear S-matrix factorizes into a product of elastic S-matrices for elementary partonic collisions. Interference effects and, in particular, the contribution of loop diagrams are fully taken into account in the derivation of the spectrum, which is shown to coincide with the result earlier obtained by superposing the elementary interactions incoherently. A quantitative analysis confirms that the deformation induced by multiple collsions is a large effect at RHIC and LHC energies, for transverse momenta ~ 20 GeV.Comment: text in LaTex, 4 figures in P

Nuclear Effects in Charmonium Production in QCD

It is shown that the nuclear shadowing of charmonium due to the modification of the nuclear parton distribution is similar in the factorization approach based on non relativistic QCD and in the color evaporation model. In the first model, a separate study of the color octet and color singlet contributions to the yields of the various charmonium states as well as the contributions of these states to the total J/ΨJ/\Psi production is performed. It is found a clear xFx_F dependence of these contributions which can reproduce experimental data for moderate xFx_F.Comment: 11 pages, 5 Postscript figure

Leading Chiral Contributions to the Spin Structure of the Proton

    Get PDF
The leading chiral contributions to the quark and gluon components of the proton spin are calculated using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Similar calculations are done for the moments of the generalized parton distributions relevant to the quark and gluon angular momentum densities. These results provide useful insight about the role of pions in the spin structure of the nucleon, and can serve as a guidance for extrapolating lattice QCD calculations at large quark masses to the chiral limit.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; a typo in Ref. 7 correcte

Shadowing in neutrino deep inelastic scattering and the determination of the strange quark distribution

We discuss shadowing corrections to the structure function F2F_2 in neutrino deep-inelastic scattering on heavy nuclear targets. In particular, we examine the role played by shadowing in the comparison of the structure functions F2F_2 measured in neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering. The importance of shadowing corrections in the determination of the strange quark distributions is explained.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
