    The seismicity of east Africa

    Get PDF
A preliminary investigation of seismic recordings made by the Durham University array station at Kaptagat, Kenya, for the period July 1970 until May 1971 has been made, A map has been produced indicating the epicentral location of earthquakes recorded within East Africa during this period. The work has shown that the majority of earthquakes recorded occurred associated with the major tectonic features of the East African rifts. The areas from which the largest numbers of earthquakes have been recorded were the western rift and the Kavirondo rift. An empirical preliminary magnitude scale has been devised for earthquakes recorded at Kaptagat, Magnitude frequency plots for areas within East Africa indicate a difference in the strength between the underlying rocks of the western and eastern rifts. The western rift exhibits the large bursts of energy release normally associated with more elastic material failure of the crust. The eastern rift shows earthquake magnitude and frequency characteristics that are indicative of the lower maximum stresses possibly associated with semi plastic flow rather than more elastic failure. This is taken as confirmation that the western rift has a structure possibly close to normal crust with significant spreading having not yet occurred. The eastern rift on the other hand, is seen as a zone of more plastic material failure and crustal spreading, identifying it as a plate boundary

Charter and Party Boat Operators in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico: A Social Structure Perspective

To better address the charter and party boat fishery needs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, fishery managers must understand the linkages between the industry and other groups and organizations that affect its success. Gulf state charter and party boat operators were interviewed to ascertain the extent of their social network linkages, membership in community organizations, business community relationships, and linkages to information sources. Approximately one-third to one-half of the charter and party boat operators did not belong to local community organizations that could assist their business through tourism promotion or natural resource protection. Despite their limited integration in the community, the vast majority of operators gave and received referrals from other businesses. Of four major information sources, the National Weather Service and the County Marine Extension agents were rated highest and lowest, respectively, in mean importance to charter and party boat operators. Results suggest that business success can be enhanced by strengthening network ties between operators and local businesses, chambers of commerce, and tourism organizations. For this to occur, individual operators and charter/party boat organizations need to become more effective in representing industry interests. Informational linkages between industry and govemment agencies also need improvement

The role of Glutaredoxin-2 in the modulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics in female mice fed a high-fat diet

Our group recently observed that male mice containing a deletion for the gene encoding the thiol oxidoreductase glutaredoxin-2 (GRX2) were protected from diet-induced obesity (DIO) and the development of related disorders (e.g. fatty liver disease). This effect was associated with increased fuel combustion in muscles. In the present study, I assessed if deleting the Grx2 gene protected female mice from DIO. Unlike male mice, in this study female wild-type (WT) littermates were completely resistant to developing DIO and related co-morbidities. Additionally, deletion of the Grx2 gene did not alter the weight gain profiles, adiposity, intrahepatic fatty acid and glycogen levels, or circulating triglycerides in these mice. Furthermore, while differences in reactive oxygen species generation in liver mitochondria were observed, this trend was not present in muscle mitochondria. Mitochondrial bioenergetics data revealed no differences in mitochondrial respiration between WT and GRX2-deficient female mice fed a control or high-fat diet

The 2018 Midterm Election: Nevada and the Nation Post-Election Analysis

Brookings Mountain West, in partnership with CSUN, was pleased to present part two of a two-part analysis on the 2018 Midterm elections. The 2018 Midterms included elections for all 435 members of the House of Representatives, including four seats in Nevada. In the U.S. Senate, 34 seats were up for election, including one seat in Nevada. Across the United States, 36 states elected governors, including the State of Nevada. The Democratic Party sought to flip a minimum of 24 seats to become the majority party in House and 2 seats to become the majority party in the Senate. Two Mountain West states, Nevada and Arizona, presented the best opportunity for the Democratic Party to flip seats in the U.S. Senate. Republicans looked to flip seats in 10 states that Donald Trump won in 2016. Panelists reacted to the policy issues and voting trends that resulted from the 2018 Midterm elections

Building employability skills for higher education students: An Australian example

    Get PDF
Employability has become an important focus for graduates and employers in Australia, as many universities contend with the notion of developing knowledgeable and problem-solving graduates who are workforce ready practitioners. This paper presents an example of how the higher education communication disciplines from across Victoria, Australia, have developed a forum that allows graduating students to engage directly with industry leaders to better prepare for the leap from higher education to professional employment in the communication and media sectors. This national award-winning education forum brings multi-institutional student groups, recent graduates, academics, and industry practitioners and leaders together in order to aid the development of student skills in areas such as: networking, job application, time management, and effective work habits

Adaptation of diesel rubber-tired loading equipment to a bedded fluorspar mining problem

The fluorspar-zinc orebody at Minerva No. 1 mine near Cave in Rock, in Hardin County, Illinois, would have been classed as non-commercial before the days of flotation milling and mine mechanization. The bulk of the ore requires fine grinding for acceptable beneficiation, and the assay of the head feed runs considerably lower than grades thought to be commercial in the fluorspar district prior to 1940. However, the reserves found by drilling before the decision was made to invest in mine development, and the construction of a two-product, 250-ton, flotation mill, with complete power plant and surface shops, exceeded 600,000 tons. The belief that more than twice this tonnage of additional ore was very probable has been justified by subsequent prospecting. The shaft sinking commenced in 1942, and full plant operation commenced in 1944. It was apparent from the beginning that full advantage of mine mechanization practices would have to be taken to keep mining costs as low as possible. The advantage of a large reserve opened the way for justifying the expenditure of capital for mechanical equipment costs of which could be depreciated over many tons and years. Selection of equipment types developed and used with some measure of success in other mining districts, having similar mining conditions, was based upon the need to lower unit mining costs per ton, within the limits imposed by milling capacity, 250 tons, later raised to 325 tons, per day. This thesis describes the attempts to achieve the best applicable types of loading and hauling equipment to keep mining costs low in a mine where output is held down. Other factors governing this trend toward utmost mechanization were (1) a desire to limit the size of the manpower requirements during a period of skilled mine labor shortage, (2) adopt equipment types of the operation of which could be taught to new employes, who lacked any mining experience, and (3) adopt equipment types which would help the mine achieve a better safety record than had been experienced in the fluorspar district --Introduction, pages 2-3
