Diffusion and Trapping on a one-dimensional lattice
The properties of a particle diffusing on a one-dimensional lattice where at
each site a random barrier and a random trap act simultaneously on the particle
are investigated by numerical and analytical techniques. The combined effect of
disorder and traps yields a decreasing survival probability with broad
distribution (log-normal). Exact enumerations, effective-medium approximation
and spectral analysis are employed. This one-dimensional model shows rather
rich behaviours which were previously believed to exist only in higher
dimensionality. The possibility of a trapping-dominated super universal class

Diffusion with critically correlated traps and the slow relaxation of the longest wavelength mode
We study diffusion on a substrate with permanent traps distributed with
critical positional correlation, modeled by their placement on the perimeters
of a critical percolation cluster. We perform a numerical analysis of the
vibrational density of states and the largest eigenvalue of the equivalent
scalar elasticity problem using the method of Arnoldi and Saad. We show that
the critical trap correlation increases the exponent appearing in the stretched
exponential behavior of the low frequency density of states by approximately a
factor of two as compared to the case of no correlations. A finite size scaling
hypothesis of the largest eigenvalue is proposed and its relation to the
density of states is given. The numerical analysis of this scaling postulate
leads to the estimation of the stretch exponent in good agreement with the

A pseudo-spectral approach to inverse problems in interface dynamics
An improved scheme for computing coupling parameters of the
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation from a collection of successive interface
profiles, is presented. The approach hinges on a spectral representation of
this equation. An appropriate discretization based on a Fourier representation,
is discussed as a by-product of the above scheme. Our method is first tested on
profiles generated by a one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation where it
is shown to reproduce the input parameters very accurately. When applied to
microscopic models of growth, it provides the values of the coupling parameters
associated with the corresponding continuum equations. This technique favorably

Modeling river delta formation
A new model to simulate the time evolution of river delta formation process
is presented. It is based on the continuity equation for water and sediment
flow and a phenomenological sedimentation/ erosion law. Different delta types
are reproduced using different parameters and erosion rules. The structures of
the calculated patterns are analyzed in space and time and compared with real
data patterns. Furthermore our model is capable to simulate the rich dynamics
related to the switching of the mouth of the river delta. The simulation
results are then compared with geological records for the Mississippi river
Correlation of vulnerability and damage between artistic assets and structural elements: The DataBAES archive for the conservation planning of CH masonry buildings in seismic areas
Historical buildings in seismic hazard-prone regions need specific measures in safety protection, largely due to the presence of artistic assets and/or decorations, both movable (e.g., statues, pinnacles, etc.) and unmovable (e.g., frescoes, valuable plasters or wall paintings, mosaics, and stuccoes). A correlation of damage between structural systems and artworks is fundamental for defining limit states, which can identify the proper conditions for interventions. Nevertheless, several vulnerability aspects can be identified before a seismic event occurs, the study of which can provide the basic dataset for setting up preventive measures in conservation programs. In this paper, the vulnerability and damage conditions related to structural elements (SE) and unmovable artistic assets (AA) belonging to historical masonry buildings are analysed. Optimized survey forms for the onsite detection of either intrinsic (e.g., compositional) defects or deterioration phenomena for both materials and structure are proposed, and results are provided in a web data system (called DataBAES). This enables us to compare the current levels of vulnerability and damage of AA and SE on a scale of five increasing grades. This procedure has been validated on a series of buildings struck by earthquakes in Italy and can be used for correlations of the seismic behaviour of SE and AA in predictive analyses
Phase diagrams of Janus fluids with up-down constrained orientations
A class of binary mixtures of Janus fluids formed by colloidal spheres with
the hydrophobic hemispheres constrained to point either up or down are studied
by means of Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and simple analytical
approximations. These fluids can be experimentally realized by the application
of an external static electrical field. The gas-liquid and demixing phase
transitions in five specific models with different patch-patch affinities are
analyzed. It is found that a gas-liquid transition is present in all the
models, even if only one of the four possible patch-patch interactions is
attractive. Moreover, provided the attraction between like particles is
stronger than between unlike particles, the system demixes into two subsystems
with different composition at sufficiently low temperatures and high densities.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Pre-packaged food products business to consumer (B2C) distance selling and information obligations in Italian mass market retailers
The supply and sale of food online are on the rise. The value of e-commerce in Europe has been estimated in 602 billion euros in 2017, 324 million people in the old continent purchase online. In the European area, the Netherlands and Italy are the countries where the e-commerce market grew faster in the last five years. Nevertheless, in Italy the spread of online shopping has reached the 89.9% of the population between 11 and 74 years old. The access to the Internet, as declared by 43 million Italians, it is carried out from fixed or mobile locations. In terms of revenues the food sector recorded a +24% among the different sectors facing one of the higher grows in terms of percentages. The regulatory framework that disciplines the food products distance selling can be traced back to two fundamental pillars: the European legislation on e-commerce on the one side and the food information to consumers on the other side. Under article 14 of the Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, the European legislator states that the mandatory information, as indicated in article 9, shall be available to the consumer before the purchase is concluded and when the product is delivered. The study aims at verifying: the level of compliance by Italians MMR with the information regulation about food products distance selling in relation to (a) the fulfillment of the obligation concerning mandatory provisions and (b) the fulfillment of the obligations concerning availability and readability of the information provided. The research has been conducted analyzing the websites of the ten largest Italian MMR and in particular: if the mandatory information were provided, the availability of the information according to the Regulation (EU) 1169/2011; the number of clicks needed to identify the food product in the website and the number of clicks Non required to obtain all the information. The observation testified a substantial compliance with the information obligations according to the European regulation. Differently, when considering the availability and readability of the information, from the analysis emerged that consumers have to follow a path that is not immediate and intuitive. Conclusions are provided in relation to the presented research
Diffusion on non exactly decimable tree-like fractals
We calculate the spectral dimension of a wide class of tree-like fractals by
solving the random walk problem through a new analytical technique, based on
invariance under generalized cutting-decimation transformations. These fractals
are generalizations of the NTD lattices and they are characterized by non
integer spectral dimension equal or greater then 2, non anomalous diffusion
laws, dynamical dimension splitting and absence of phase transitions for spin

From rods to helices: evidence of a screw-like nematic phase
Evidence of a special chiral nematic phase is provided using numerical
simulation and Onsager theory for systems of hard helical particles. This phase
appears at the high density end of the nematic phase, when helices are well
aligned, and is characterized by the C symmetry axes of the helices
spiraling around the nematic director with periodicity equal to the particle
pitch. This coupling between translational and rotational degrees of freedom
allows a more efficient packing and hence an increase of translational entropy.
Suitable order parameters and correlation functions are introduced to identify
this screw-like phase, whose main features are then studied as a function of
radius and pitch of the helical particles. Our study highlights the physical
mechanism underlying a similar ordering observed in colloidal helical flagella
[E. Barry et al. \textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{96}, 018305 (2006)] and
raises the question of whether it could be observed in other helical particle
systems, such as DNA, at sufficiently high densities.Comment: List of authors correcte
