    Integrated physical education model

    This paper focuses on an Integrated Physical Education Model that links the cyclical model of experiential learning (Kolb, 1971, 1979), the Complete 4MAT System (McCarthy, 1980), and Teaching Games for Understanding (Bunker &amp; Thorpe, 1982). Understanding the similarities between experiential learning and a games-based approach to teaching games may help physical educators to design and to facilitate more beneficial lessons for their students. Key outcomes of successful physical education are students that have the ability to make successful decisions on the field and have awareness of both technical and tactical aspects of games. This discussion of an integrated approach involves playing games, emphasises active involvement, and encourages student decision-making.<br /

    Scalar mixing and entrainment in an axisymmetric jet subjected to external turbulence

    The effect of zero-mean-flow external turbulence on the topology of the scalar turbulent/turbulent interface (TTI) has been recently studied in axisymmetric jets (Kohan & Gaskin, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 950, 2022, A32). The present study aims to understand the process of turbulent entrainment into a jet, as affected by background turbulence, using scalar statistics. Planar-laser-induced fluorescence was employed to capture the orthogonal cross sections of the jet at a fixed downstream station with varying background turbulence intensities and length scales. The conditional scalar profiles revealed that the thickness of the scalar TTI is greater than that of the traditional turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI), and the interfacial thickness is an increasing function of the background turbulence intensity. Although nibbling remains the primary entrainment mechanism in the far field, increased occurrence of concentration 'holes' within the interfacial layer in the presence of ambient turbulence suggests a more significant role of large-scale engulfment in the turbulent/turbulent entrainment process. Enhanced contribution of the area of detached jet patches (i.e. 'islands') to that of the main jet is hypothesized to be evidence of intense detrainment events in the background turbulence. This can potentially explain the reduced net entrainment into the jet, which manifests as less negative values of scalar skewness within the jet core

    Brood patch and sex-ratio observations indicate breeding provenance and timing in New Zealand storm petrel (Fregetta maoriana)

    We used measurements of brood patch and moult status to estimate the breeding phenology of New Zealand Storm-Petrel, using birds caught at sea within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park near Auckland, New Zealand. Birds caught October–January had completely downy brood patches, whereas birds caught February–April had bare brood patches with an observed male bias in the February sex-ratio, consistent with a female pre-laying exodus typical of petrels and with the existence of an unknown colony in the region. No birds captured exhibited primary moult, which is known to occur in storm-petrels during their non-breeding season. Our data support the conclusion that the New Zealand storm-petrel breeds during January–June in northern New Zealand and that field surveys for the species on offshore islands in this region during this period are warrante

    The construct validity of brief continence self-assessment awareness questionnaires

    The aim of this study was to develop brief versions of the continence self-assessment awareness questionnaire (CSAAQ), sensitive to gender-specific experiences of incontinence, and to evaluate their construct validity. Recruitment took place at four Victorian healthcare settings during 2001 and 2002. A total of 431 participants completed the CSAAQ following an appointment or hospital discharge. Factor analyses performed on CSAAQ items demonstrated there were three factors (urinary incontinence symptoms, faecal incontinence symptoms, lifestyle adjustment behaviours) for both women and men. The urinary and faecal items that loaded on their respective factors were different for women and men. Consequently two versions of the CSAAQ were developed; one for males and one for females. Analyses supported the construct validity and internal consistency reliability of the gender specific questionnaires. The brief gender specific CSAAQs could be produced as a single questionnaire with separate sections for female and male specific items. The brief CSAAQs are suitable for use as an incontinence self-assessment questionnaire to increase awareness of individual incontinence issues and to encourage health-seeking behaviours.<br /

    Development of a miniaturized scanning electron microscope that will utilize the martian atmosphere to dissipate charge during analysis continues. This instrument is expected to be used on a future rover or lander to answer fundamental Mars science questions. To identify the most important questions, a survey was taken at the 47th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC). From the gathered information initial topics were identified for a SEM on the martian surface. These priorities are identified and discussed below.
