Background - Dupuytren's disease is a benign fibroproliferative disorder that causes the fingers to be drawn into the palm via formation of new tissue under the glabrous skin of the hand. This disorder causes functional limitations, but it can be treated through a variety of surgical techniques. As a chronic condition, it tends to recur.

GLSMs for non-Kahler Geometries
We identify a simple mechanism by which H-flux satisfying the modified
Bianchi identity arises in garden-variety (0,2) gauged linear sigma models.
Taking suitable limits leads to effective gauged linear sigma models with
Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation. We test the quantum-consistency of a class
of such effective theories by constructing an off-shell superconformal algebra,

The effects of aging on neuropil structure in mouse somatosensory cortex-A 3D electron microscopy analysis of layer 1
This study has used dense reconstructions from serial EM images to compare the neuropil ultrastructure and connectivity of aged and adult mice. The analysis used models of axons, dendrites, and their synaptic connections, reconstructed from volumes of neuropil imaged in layer 1 of the somatosensory cortex. This shows the changes to neuropil structure that accompany a general loss of synapses in a well-defined brain region. The loss of excitatory synapses was balanced by an increase in their size such that the total amount of synaptic surface, per unit length of axon, and per unit volume of neuropil, stayed the same. There was also a greater reduction of inhibitory synapses than excitatory, particularly those found on dendritic spines, resulting in an increase in the excitatory/inhibitory balance. The close correlations, that exist in young and adult neurons, between spine volume, bouton volume, synaptic size, and docked vesicle numbers are all preserved during aging. These comparisons display features that indicate a reduced plasticity of cortical circuits, with fewer, more transient, connections, but nevertheless an enhancement of the remaining connectivity that compensates for a generalized synapse loss
Generalized geometry, calibrations and supersymmetry in diverse dimensions
We consider type II backgrounds of the form R^{1,d-1} x M^{10-d} for even d,
preserving 2^{d/2} real supercharges; for d = 4, 6, 8 this is minimal
supersymmetry in d dimensions, while for d = 2 it is N = (2,0) supersymmetry in
two dimensions. For d = 6 we prove, by explicitly solving the Killing-spinor
equations, that there is a one-to-one correspondence between background
supersymmetry equations in pure-spinor form and D-brane generalized
calibrations; this correspondence had been known to hold in the d = 4 case.
Assuming the correspondence to hold for all d, we list the calibration forms
for all admissible D-branes, as well as the background supersymmetry equations
in pure-spinor form. We find a number of general features, including the
following: The pattern of codimensions at which each calibration form appears
exhibits a (mod 4) periodicity. In all cases one of the pure-spinor equations
implies that the internal manifold is generalized Calabi-Yau. Our results are

Gravitational Microlensing Evidence for a Planet Orbiting a Binary Star System
The study of extra-solar planetary systems has emerged as a new discipline of
observational astronomy in the past few years with the discovery of a number of
extra-solar planets. The properties of most of these extra-solar planets were
not anticipated by theoretical work on the formation of planetary systems. Here
we report observations and light curve modeling of gravitational microlensing
event MACHO-97-BLG-41, which indicates that the lens system consists of a
planet orbiting a binary star system. According to this model, the mass ratio
of the binary star system is 3.8:1 and the stars are most likely to be a late K
dwarf and an M dwarf with a separation of about 1.8 AU. A planet of about 3
Jupiter masses orbits this system at a distance of about 7 AU. If our
interpretation of this light curve is correct, it represents the first
discovery of a planet orbiting a binary star system and the first detection of
a Jovian planet via the gravitational microlensing technique. It suggests that

Nonperturbative studies of supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with 4 and 8 supercharges at finite temperature
We investigate thermodynamic properties of one-dimensional U(N)
supersymmetric gauge theories with 4 and 8 supercharges in the planar large-N
limit by Monte Carlo calculations. Unlike the 16 supercharge case, the
threshold bound state with zero energy is widely believed not to exist in these
models. This led A.V. Smilga to conjecture that the internal energy decreases
exponentially at low temperature instead of decreasing with a power law. In the
16 supercharge case, the latter behavior was predicted from the dual black
0-brane geometry and confirmed recently by Monte Carlo calculations. Our
results for the models with 4 and 8 supercharges indeed support the exponential
behavior, revealing a qualitative difference from the 16 supercharge case.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX2e, minor corrections in section 3, final

Pneumonia and in-hospital mortality in the context of neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia (NOD) in stroke and a new NOD step-wise concept
The aim of our work was to develop a step-wise concept for investigating neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia (NOD) that could be used by both trained nursing staff as well as swallowing therapists and physicians to identify patients with NOD at an early stage and so enable an appropriate therapy to be started. To achieve this objective, we assessed uniform terminology and standard operating procedures (SOP) in a new NOD step-wise concept. In-house stroke mortality rates and rates of pneumonia were measured over time (2003–2009) in order to show improvements in quality of care. In addition, outcome measures in a stroke-unit monitoring system were studied after neurorehabilitation (day 90) assessing quality of life (QL) and patient feedback. An investigation that was carried out in the context of internal and external quality assurance stroke projects revealed a significant correlation between the NOD step-wise concept and low rates of pneumonia and in-house mortality. The quality of life measures show a delta value that can contribute to “post-stroke” depression. The NOD step-wise concept (NSC) should, on the one hand, be capable of being routinely used in clinical care and, on the other, being able to fulfil the requirements of being scientifically based for investigating different stages of swallowing disorders. The value of our NSC relates to the effective management of clinical resources and the provision of adequate diagnostic and therapeutic options for different grades of dysphagia. We anticipate that our concept will provide substantial support to physicians, as well as swallowing therapists, in clinical settings and rehabilitation facilities, thereby promoting better guidance and understanding of neurogenic dysphagia as a concept in acute and rehabilitation care, especially stroke-unit settings
Impact of inhaled corticosteroids on growth in children with asthma: systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Long-term inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) may reduce growth velocity and final height of children with asthma. We aimed to evaluate the association between ICS use of >12 months and growth. Methods: We initially searched MEDLINE and EMBASE in July 2013, followed by a PubMed search updated to December 2014. We selected RCTs and controlled observational studies of ICS use in patients with asthma. We conducted random effects meta-analysis of mean differences in growth velocity (cm/year) or final height (cm) between groups. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. Results: We found 23 relevant studies (twenty RCTs and three observational studies) after screening 1882 hits. Meta-analysis of 16 RCTs showed that ICS use significantly reduced growth velocity at one year follow-up (mean difference -0.48 cm/year (95% CI -0.66 to -0.29)). There was evidence of a dose-response effect in three RCTs. Final adult height showed a mean reduction of -1.20 cm (95% CI -1.90 cm to -0.50 cm) with budesonide versus placebo in a high quality RCT. Meta-analysis of two lower quality observational studies revealed uncertainty in the association between ICS use and final adult height, pooled mean difference -0.85 cm (95% CI -3.35 to 1.65). Conclusion: Use of ICS for >12 months in children with asthma has a limited impact on annual growth velocity. In ICS users, there is a slight reduction of about a centimeter in final adult height, which when interpreted in the context of average adult height in England (175 cm for men and 161 cm for women), represents a 0.7% reduction compared to non-ICS users
