Common Sense is Not Common. So How Can A Leader Make Good Decisions?
In education today there is a move away from top-down leadership toward a more inclusive, shared or participative leadership model. This model includes shared decision-making, which has the potential to empower and radically change any organization willing to take the risk of implementing this type of leadership. This article combines another important aspect of leadership to the concept of shared decision-making: servant leadership. With a servant-leader at the helm and shared decision-making in place, a school has the potential to grow in sync with the needs and desires of its stakeholders
Interdependence of science requirements and safety limitations on the space station
One of the benefits of experimentation on the Space Station is the ability to carry out the experiment, to immediately analyze the results, to calculate improved experimental parameters, and to quickly repeat the experiment. In this improved mode of operation there are new safety considerations that must be addressed in the design stages of both the station and the experiments. Some of the chemical and procedural requirements are shared, and some of the earth-bound storage, dispensing, and disposal techniques that may assist in the development of analogous procedures for the Space Station are discussed
Growth of lead tin telluride crystals in gels
Improved gels and several geometries were investigated for use in growing crystals. The use of lead sulfide test crystals proved workable, but it was impossible to obtain and maintain a sufficiently concentrated telluride ion solution to successfully grow lead telluride crystals. It appears that oxygen in the solution is capable of oxidizing the telluride ion up to tellurium metal. The method may still be successful, but only if precautions are taken to eliminate dissolved oxygen from the gels and aqueous solutions and to maintain a suitable concentration of telluride, Te(2)-(aq.)
Procedure to prepare transparent silica gels
This invention relates to the production of silica gels and in particular to a process for the preparation of silica gels which can be used as a crystal growth medium that simulates the convectionless environment of space to produce structurally perfect crystals. Modern utilizations of substances in electronics, such as radio transmitters and high frequency microphones, often require single crystals with controlled purity and structural perfection. The near convectionless environment of silica gel suppresses nucleation, thereby reducing the competitive nature of crystal growth. This competition limits the size and perfection of the crystal; and it is obviously desirable to suppress nucleation until, ideally, only one crystal grows in a predetermined location. A silica gel is not a completely convectionless environment like outer space, but is the closest known environment to that of outer space that can be created on Earth
Optimal Axes of Siberian Snakes for Polarized Proton Acceleration
Accelerating polarized proton beams and storing them for many turns can lead
to a loss of polarization when accelerating through energies where a spin
rotation frequency is in resonance with orbit oscillation frequencies.
First-order resonance effects can be avoided by installing Siberian Snakes in
the ring, devices which rotate the spin by 180 degrees around the snake axis
while not changing the beam's orbit significantly. For large rings, several
Siberian Snakes are required.
Here a criterion will be derived that allows to find an optimal choice of the
snake axes. Rings with super-period four are analyzed in detail, and the HERA
proton ring is used as an example for approximate four-fold symmetry. The
proposed arrangement of Siberian Snakes matches their effects so that all
spin-orbit coupling integrals vanish at all energies and therefore there is no
first-order spin-orbit coupling at all for this choice, which I call snakes
matching. It will be shown that in general at least eight Siberian Snakes are
needed and that there are exactly four possibilities to arrange their axes.
When the betatron phase advance between snakes is chosen suitably, four
Siberian Snakes can be sufficient.
To show that favorable choice of snakes have been found, polarized protons
are tracked for part of HERA-p's acceleration cycle which shows that
polarization is preserved best for the here proposed arrangement of Siberian

Turbofan forced mixer lobe flow modeling. Part 3: Application to augment engines
Military engines frequently need large quantities of thrust for short periods of time. The addition of an augmentor can provide such thrust increases but with a penalty of increased duct length and engine weight. The addition of a forced mixer to the augmentor improves performance and reduces the penalty, as well as providing a method for siting the required flame holders. In this report two augmentor concepts are investigated: a swirl-mixer augmentor and a mixer-flameholder augmentor. Several designs for each concept are included and an experimental assessment of one of the swirl-mixer augmentors is presented
