Electronic noise in charge sensitive preamplifiers for X-ray spectroscopy and the benefits of a SiC input JFET
A comprehensive summary and analysis of the electronic noise affecting the resolution of X-ray, Îł-ray and particle counting spectroscopic systems which employ semiconductor detectors and charge sensitive preamplifiers is presented. The noise arising from the input transistor of the preamplifier and its contribution to the total noise is examined. A model for computing the noise arising from the front-end transistor is also presented and theoretical calculations comparing the noise contribution of transistors made of different materials are discussed, emphasizing the advantages of wide bandgap transistor technology
Retrodiction with two-level atoms: atomic previvals
In the Jaynes-Cummings model a two-level atom interacts with a single-mode
electromagnetic field. Quantum mechanics predicts collapses and revivals in the
probability that a measurement will show the atom to be excited at various
times after the initial preparation of the atom and field. In retrodictive
quantum mechanics we seek the probability that the atom was prepared in a
particular state given the initial state of the field and the outcome of a
later measurement on the atom. Although this is not simply the time reverse of
the usual predictive problem, we demonstrate in this paper that retrodictive
collapses and revivals also exist. We highlight the differences between
predictive and retrodictive evolutions and describe an interesting situation
where the prepared state is essentially unretrodictable.Comment: 15 pages, 3 (5) figure
Residual Stresses in Layered Manufacturing
Layered Manufacturing processes accumulate residual stresses during materialbuildup. These stresses may cause part warping and layer delamination. This paper presents
work done on investigating residual stress accumulation andp(i,rt distortion of Layered
Manufactured artifacts. A simple analyticaLmodel was developed and used to determine how the number of layers and the layer thickness influences part warping. Resllits
show that thin layers produce lower part deflection as compared with depositing fewer
and thicker layers. In addition to the analytical work, a finite element model wasdeveloped and used to illvestigate the deposition pattern's influence on. the part deflection.
Finite element model and corresponding experimental analysis showed that the geometry of the deposition pattern significantly affects the resulting part distortion. This
finite element model was also used to investigate an inter-layer surface defect,. known
as the Christmas Thee Step, that is associated with Shape Deposition Manufacturing.
Results indicate that the features of this defect are influenced only by the material
deposited close. to the part·surface and the particular material deposited. The step is

The role of economics in the QUERI program: QUERI Series.
Background: The United States (U.S.) Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) has implemented economic analyses in single-site and multi-site clinical trials. To date, no one has reviewed whether the QUERI Centers are taking an optimal approach to doing so. Consistent with the continuous learning culture of the QUERI Program, this paper provides such a reflection. Methods: We present a case study of QUERI as an example of how economic considerations can and should be integrated into implementation research within both single and multi-site studies. We review theoretical and applied cost research in implementation studies outside and within VA. We also present a critique of the use of economic research within the QUERI program. Results: Economic evaluation is a key element of implementation research. QUERI has contributed many developments in the field of implementation but has only recently begun multisite implementation trials across multiple regions within the national VA healthcare system. These trials are unusual in their emphasis on developing detailed costs of implementation, as well as in the use of business case analyses (budget impact analyses). Conclusion: Economics appears to play an important role in QUERI implementation studies, only after implementation has reached the stage of multi-site trials. Economic analysis could better inform the choice of which clinical best practices to implement and the choice of implementation interventions to employ. Environmental Volunteering: Motivations, Modes and Outcomes
Volunteers play a key role in natural resource management: their commitment, time and labour constitute a major contribution towards managing environments in Australia and throughout the world. From the point of view of environmental managers much interest has focussed on defining tasks suitable to volunteers. However, we argue that an improved understanding of what motivates volunteers is required to sustain volunteer commitments to environmental management in the long term. This is particularly important given that multiple government programs rely heavily on volunteers in Australia, a phenomenon also noted in the UK, Canada, and the USA. Whilst there is considerable research on volunteering in other sectors (e.g. health), there has been relatively little attention paid to understanding environmental volunteering. Drawing on the literature from other sectors and environmental volunteering where available, we present a set of six broad motivations underpinning environmental volunteers and five different modes that environmental volunteering is manifested. We developed and refined the sets of motivations and modes through a pilot study involving interviews with volunteers and their coordinators from environmental groups in Sydney and the Bass Coast. The pilot study data emphasise the importance of promoting community education as a major focus of environmental volunteer groups and demonstrate concerns over the fine line between supporting and abusing volunteers given their role in delivering environmental outcomes.environment, volunteering, motivation, Natural Resource Management (NRM)
Retrodiction as a tool for micromaser field measurements
We use retrodictive quantum theory to describe cavity field measurements by
successive atomic detections in the micromaser. We calculate the state of the
micromaser cavity field prior to detection of sequences of atoms in either the
excited or ground state, for atoms that are initially prepared in the excited
state. This provides the POM elements, which describe such sequences of

Antisymmetric multi-partite quantum states and their applications
Entanglement is a powerful resource for processing quantum information. In
this context pure, maximally entangled states have received considerable
attention. In the case of bipartite qubit-systems the four orthonormal
Bell-states are of this type. One of these Bell states, the singlet Bell-state,
has the additional property of being antisymmetric with respect to particle
exchange. In this contribution we discuss possible generalizations of this
antisymmetric Bell-state to cases with more than two particles and with
single-particle Hilbert spaces involving more than two dimensions. We review
basic properties of these totally antisymmetric states. Among possible
applications of this class of states we analyze a new quantum key sharing
protocol and methods for comparing quantum states
Visualizing the Quantum Interaction Picture in Phase Space
We illustrate the correspondence between the quantum Interaction
Picture-evolution of the state of a quantum system in Hilbert space and a
combination of local and global transformations of its Wigner function in phase
space. To this aim, we consider the time-evolution of a quantized harmonic
oscillator driven by both a linear and a quadratic (in terms of bosonic
creation and annihilation operators) potentials and employ the Magnus series to
derive the exact form of the time-evolution operator. In this case, the
Interaction Picture corresponds to a local transformation of phase
space-reference frame into the one that is co-moving with the Wigner function.Comment: Submitted to New Journal of Physic
Hot temperatures and morbidity : a systematic review and meta–analysis
Extreme temperatures have been shown to have a detrimental effect on health. Hot temperatures can increase the risk of mortality, particularly in people suffering from cardiorespiratory diseases. Given the onset of climate change, it is critical that the impact of temperature on health is understood, so that effective public health strategies can correctly identify vulnerable groups within the population. However, while effects on mortality have been extensively studied, temperature–related morbidity has received less attention.
