peer reviewedThe sixth chapter offers another perspective on the analytical construct of the gender pipeline, using a multidimensional and multilevel approach, thus under-lining how such a phenomenon highlights different typical features according to varying social and organisational contexts. On the basis of a meta- analysis of the case studies conducted in the GARCIA project, Farah Dubois- Shaik, Bernard Fusulier and Caroline Vincke develop a typology where social, organisational and career- based dimensions are combined with costs at stake, i.e. those costs that each specific configuration generates for science, for organisations and for individuals, particularly in terms of gender balance and inequality. In particular, three types of careers and experiences are identified: (i) persisting in precarious career paths, at a high cumulative cost; (ii) continuing in ambivalent career paths, at moderate cost; and (iii) striving to win in competitive career paths, at a specific cost. Such a typology can be a useful tool for research institutions to allow them to think about their own leaky pipeline situation and to identify strat-egies that can reduce relative costs through the re- thinking of how work is organ-ised, in particular in terms of workforce casualisation and its conditions, as well as that pertaining to its female component

Panel « "Gender and Work/Life Interferences in Scientific Careers"

peer reviewedThis double special issue gathers a series of nuanced critically conceptual and case-study research showing that in the contemporary European context, despite regional differences in gender regimes, political and economic demands and organizational cultures, work/life balance policies and their translation into practice remains a highly ambiguous issue. Although work/ life balance policies have undoubtedly entered the university institutional spaces, they are deterred by opposing institutional policy logics and particularly ‘greedy’ logics of the organizing of work that still aligns to outdated work-exclusive masculine organizational culture (outdated because men too are suffering the effects, and because the academic environment is feminized). Moreover, there are lingering gender stereotypes around the value and attribution of home and work duties, which are having a significant impact upon women’s professional and private spheres and experiences in academic work. The gathered research shows how university institutions are still quite far from having addressed the core issues that undermine women’s career advancement and their possibilities to access to academic membership and leadership, still obliging them (and their male counterparts) to align with a work and membership (selection and progression) logic and organization that does not take into consideration parenthood, family and personal spheres of life

Management of Working Time for Career Extension in Belgium and Quebec

This article compares the evolution of employment policies pertaining to ageing population and workforce, and to management of career wind-down in Belgium and Quebec. The article focuses on a trend common to both societies: the promotion of measures aimed at managing working time arrangements toward career extension ("active ageing" in employment). Social transaction analysis applied to the situation under review reveals two distinct societal configurations and shows how structural factors (demographic evolution, retirement ratio and labour market) are not entirely adequate to explain such societal differences. Further explanation is reached when symbolic elements (the logical level) and a description of the actors' evolving positions are grafted to the pattern. The authors conclude that while there are different forms of working-time arrangements for the end of career or active life these relate to the same movement: enhancing individual accountability for extending their participation in the labour market

Tipus de projecte: Projecte europeuA portada: Universite catholique de Louvain. Institut de sciences du travail.Research project conducted on behalf of the Employment and Social Affairs DG of the European CommissionThis report aims to examine the process of social dialogue and to present the actors participating in that dialogue in the "C&M" sector in the 15 states member of the European Union (when we cite "the 15 states member of the European Union" or "UE15", please understand "the 15 states member of the European Union before the enlargement of the 1st May 2004"). The object of this comparative study can be resumed under three main points : 1. Description of the structuring of the whole of the C&M fields through certain key aspects which make it easier to compare one EU country with another. 2. Provision of an overview of the principal characteristics of the established professional relationships and the process of CB in the member states of the EU in this sector. 3. Provision of an overview of the main protagonists operating in this sector. The topics are the description of the sector (activities, organizations, employment and evolution), professional relations and collective negotiation (social dialogue, evolution and trends) and the players of the sector (employers' organizations and trade unions). We laid great stress on the importance to note the type of difficulty or obstacle the national experts could find in the collect of data. This study is intended to be an introduction to a subsequent piece of work, which will be concerned more specifically with the protagonists in the CB process for the CULTURE & MEDIA sector and their representatives in the UE15
