Quality education : the student view

    Get PDF
The purpose of this heuristic study was to establish preliminary language categories for student definitions of quality secondary education in rural North Carolina and to compare that language for congruency with teacher definitions in the context of selected quantitative data. The sample was 39 students and 19 teachers in three secondary schools in the same local education unit. The qualitative data from the following questions were analyzed from student and teacher interviews: How do (STUDENTS /TEACHERS) define quality education in your school? How do YOU define quality education in your school? Categories constructed from an analysis of nouns and verbs from interview language are as follows: Concrete: grades, attendance, tests or money Program: current academic or comprehensive school Interactional: peer and social relationships Learning: life-long education for personal fulfillment Don't Know: students only

The Attending Nurse: An Evolving Model for Integrating Nursing Education and Practice

    Get PDF
The discipline of nursing continues to evolve in keeping with the dramatic expansion of scientific knowledge, technology, and a concomitant increase in complexity of patient care in all practice settings. Changing patient demographics require complex planning for co-morbidities associated with chronic diseases and life-saving advances that have altered mortality in ways never before imagined. These changes in practice, coupled with findings from sophisticated nursing research and the continuous development of new nursing knowledge, call for realignments of the relationships among academic faculty in schools of nursing, advanced practice nurse administrators, and staff nurses at the forefront of practice. This article offers a model designed to bridge the gaps among academic settings, administrative offices and the euphemistic “bedsides” where staff nurses practice. Here we describe the nurse attending model in place at the New York University Langone Medical Center (NYULMC) and provide qualitative data that support progress in our work

Mirlyn "Available Online" Label Guerilla Test

The goal of this guerilla test was to determine which of four labels (three alternate labels, in addition to the current “available online” label) denoting online availability is preferred by patrons, taking time to ensure that patrons understand the range of situations currently represented by the "available online" label. We also solicited suggestions for alternate labels from participants.Usability GroupUsability Task Forcehttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106783/1/MirlynGuerillaTest_Feb2011.pd

    Mirlyn Search Satisfaction Survey

    Get PDF
The primary purpose of this survey was to gather information about how satisfied patrons are with search results in Mirlyn and whether satisfaction levels vary significantly between categories of users (i.e. undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, etc.). The survey was designed to measure satisfaction with searching overall and with two different kinds of searches: known item searches for specific items a patron already knows about and subject searches for items about a particular topic or subject.Usability GroupUsability Task Forcehttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106782/1/MirlynSearchSurvey_Feb2011.pd

Financial affairs exempt staff's perception of factors contributing to job satisfaction

    No full text
Researchers have studied various components of institutions of higher education, but few have conducted studies of the administrative staff. With the increasingly complex environment in which institutions of higher education operate, the need for a highly trained and skilled staff is imperative to the efficient and effective operation of said institutions. Administrative employees have long been ignored in studies of higher education (Johnsrud, 2002). This study's purpose is to better understand the perceptions of factors leading to job satisfaction and the perceptions of job satisfaction held by administrative employees in Financial Affairs at a research intensive doctoral institution. Using Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory as the theoretical framework for this study, four constructs were selected: 1) personal characteristics; 2) job characteristics; 3) job satisfaction; and 4) perceived work environment. An online survey was used to collect data from employees in Financial Affairs. The researcher investigated the employees' perceptions of their work environment based on personal characteristics and job characteristics. The researcher also investigated how employees in Financial Affairs perceived job satisfaction based on Herzberg's motivator-hygiene factors. Results from this study indicated no statistically significant difference in perceptions based on gender and professional certification. However, there were statistically significant differences in perceptions based on age, length of service in Financial Affairs, and supervisory status. Data analysis provided evidence of a strong correlation between the motivator factors and job satisfaction and a strong correlation between hygiene factors and job satisfaction.
