The effect of physical activity on sleep quality, well-being, and affect in academic stress periods
The stress-buffering hypothesis postulates that physical activity and exercise can buffer the negative effects of (academic) stress on health. It still remains an open question whether students, who regularly engage in physical activity and exercise within their academic examination period, can successfully diminish these negative effects. Sixty-four subjects participated in this study and completed a total of five surveys, with T1 at the end of the semester break (baseline) and T2–T5 being presented every Friday in the last 4 weeks of the semester (examination period). They were asked to answer questions about their activity level, sleep quality, well-being and affect. Hierarchical linear models showed significant dependencies on time for all dependent measures. The expansion of the model for exercise also showed significant main effects of this predictor on well-being and positive affect (PA) and negative affect. Moreover, significant interactions with time for sleep quality and PA were found. Results suggest that physical activity and exercise in the academic examination period may be able to buffer the negative effects of stress on health-related outcomes. Therefore, activity levels should be maintained in times of high stress to prevent negative effects on sleep, well-being and affect in students
(ICG2
Phospholipases and Reactive Oxygen Species Derived Lipid Biomarkers in Healthy and Diseased Humans and Animals – A Focus on Lysophosphatidylcholine
Phospholipids (PL) are converted into lipid biomarkers by the action of phospholipases
and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are activated or released under certain
physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Therefore, the in vivo concentration
of such lipid biomarkers [e.g., lysophospholipids (LPLs)] is altered in humans and
animals under different conditions such as inflammation, stress, medication, and
nutrition. LPLs are particularly interesting because they are known to possess proand
anti-inflammatory properties and may be generated by two different pathways:
either by the influence of phospholipase A2 or by different reactive oxygen species
that are generated in significant amounts under inflammatory conditions. Both lead to
the cleavage of unsaturated acyl residues. This review provides a short summary of
the mechanisms by which lipid biomarkers are generated under in vitro and in vivo
conditions. The focus will be on lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) because usually, this is
the LPL species which occurs in the highest concentration and is, thus, easily detectable
by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Finally, the effects of lipid biomarkers
as signaling molecules and their roles in different human and animal pathologies such
as infertility, cancer, atherosclerosis, and aging will be shortly discussed
Estimating global terrestrial denitrification from measured NO:(NO + N) product ratios
The use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers and cultivation of N-fixing crops has grown exponentially over the last century, with severe environmental consequences. Most of the anthropogenic reactive nitrogen will ultimately be returned by denitrification to the atmosphere as inert N, but the magnitude of denitrification and the ratio of NO to (NO + N) emitted (R) is unknown for the vast majority of terrestrial ecosystems. This paper provides estimates of terrestrial denitrification and R by reviewing existing literature and compiling a N budget for the global land surface. We estimate that terrestrial denitrification has doubled from 80 Tg-N year in pre-industrial times to 160 Tg-N year in 2005 with a mean R of approximately 0.08. We conclude that upscaling of R can provide spatial estimates of terrestrial denitrification when data from acetylene inhibition methods are excluded. Recent advances in methodologies to measure N emissions and R under field conditions could open the way for more effective management of terrestrial N flows
