The Influence of the Zebra Mussel (Dreisena Polymorhpa) on Magnesium and Calcium Concentration in Water

In this study we examined changes in magnesium and calcium ion concentrations depending on Zebra Mussel biomass, pH values and temperature. We performed field experiments in years with different weather conditions using twelve 200 litre polycarbonate containers filled with 150 litres of non-filtered water from lowland, eutrophic reservoirs. Three treatments of the experiment were represented by: Phyto control with non-filtered water, Phyto+Dreis A with Zebra Mussel biomass of 500 g/m2, and Phyto+Dreis B with Zebra Mussel biomass of 1.000 g/m2. Magnesium and calcium ions concentrations were analyzed on an ion chromatograph (Dionex-1000). Results indicated a significant reduction in magnesium and calcium ion concentrations by Zebra Mussels (independent of mussel biomass), especially in the year with higher and more stable average temperatures. Mg concentration was significantly negatively correlated with temperature in this year. In both years of study the magnesium and calcium ion concentrations were negatively correlated with pH. Analyses of the Zebra Mussel's impact on magnesium and calcium loss from water, linked with the influence of physical factors (temperature and pH), may be valuable for the management of invaded ecosystems

The CosmicWatch Desktop Muon Detector: a self-contained, pocket sized particle detector

    Get PDF
The CosmicWatch Desktop Muon Detector is a self-contained, hand-held cosmic ray muon detector that is valuable for astro/particle physics research applications and outreach. The material cost of each detector is under $100 and it takes a novice student approximately four hours to build their first detector. The detectors are powered via a USB connection and the data can either be recorded directly to a computer or to a microSD card. Arduino- and Python-based software is provided to operate the detector and an online application to plot the data in real-time. In this paper, we describe the various design features, evaluate the performance, and illustrate the detectors capabilities by providing several example measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

Indirect searches for dark matter particles with the Super-Kamiokande detector

    Get PDF
A search for dark matter (DM) induced neutrinos from the Milky Way has been performed based on data collected with the Super-Kamiokande detector in the years 1996–2014. Dark matter density is expected to be largely enhanced in the area of the Galactic Center (GC) which may result in increased annihilation/deacy of relic particles in that region. The analysis focuses on the search for angular anisotropy in the number of observed neutrino events between the GC and the other part of the sky where the expected flux of dark matter annihilation/ decay products is low. No excess of neutrinos from the GC region has been observed with respect to atmospheric neutrino background. Upper limits on the self-annihilation cross-section and lower limits on the lifetime have been obtained for dark matter particle masses ranging from 1GeV to 10TeV for various dark matter halo models
