The Space They Take: Evaluating Historically White Fraternities through Critical Race Theory

    Get PDF
Fraternities and sororities are not often thought of as the starting points for social justice education, especially not historically White fraternities and sororities. In this paper, I outline the missions and values of a select group of historically White fraternities to better understand the foundation from which they are starting their organization. I give an overview of Critical Race Theory (CRT) that gives context for how critical race theory can work in higher education. I conclude with recommendations for reworking historically White fraternities with a CRT lens; recommendations are written for national organizations and students, and then for professional staff working with fraternities and sororities, especially historically White fraternities

Multiplicity of periodic solutions for systems of weakly coupled parametrized second order differential equations

    Get PDF
We prove a multiplicity result of periodic solutions for a system of second order differential equations having asymmetric nonlinearities. The proof is based on a recent generalization of the Poincar\ue9\u2013Birkhoff fixed point theorem provided by Fonda and Ure\uf1a

A new methodology to evaluate Human Workload State Inference

Electronics and automation are increasingly part of our daily lives, and led to the introduction of systems and intelligent machines to which the human work is delegated and that collaborate and support the user in the conduct of mancritical operations. The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is partner of the european project “Designing Dynamic Distributed Cooperative Human-Machine Systems” (D3CoS, www.d3cos.eu), that aim is the definition of affordable methods, techniques and tools which go beyond assistance systems and consequently address the specification, development and evaluation of cooperative systems from a multi-agent perspective where human and machine agents are in charge of common tasks, assigned to the system as a whole. The key on which to base the cooperation between the machine and the human is the amount of workload of the human operator. So we were involved into investigate aspects of the functional state of human operators interacting with the demonstrator in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and maritime domains. We analyzed and correlated objective psycho-physiological measures: eye blinks, respiration rate and amplitude, electro dermal activity, heart rate variability, blood pressure; with subjective self-assessed measure evaluated with two questionnaires: NASA-TLX and Rating Scale Mental Effort (RSME); with the aim to realize a mathematical regression model for classifying the mental operators workload. Keywords— Workload, psycho-physiological measures, statistical analysis, cooperative systems

An extension of the Poincaré–Birkhoff Theorem coupling twist with lower and upper solutions

In 1983, Conley and Zehnder proved a remarkable theorem on the periodic problem associated with a general Hamiltonian system, giving a partial answer to a conjecture by Arnold. Their pioneering paper has been extended in different directions by several authors. In 2017, Fonda and Ureña established a deeper relation between the results by Conley and Zehnder and the Poincaré–Birkhoff Theorem. In 2020, Fonda and Gidoni pursued along this path in order to treat systems whose Hamiltonian function includes a nonresonant quadratic term. It is the aim of this paper to further extend this fertile theory to Hamiltonian systems which, besides the periodicity-twist conditions always required in the Poincaré–Birkhoff Theorem, also include a term involving a pair of well-ordered lower and upper solutions. Phase-plane analysis techniques are used in order to recover a saddle-type dynamics permitting us to apply the above mentioned results

INTRINSIC MECHANISM FOR ENTROPY CHANGE IN CLASSICAL AND QUANTUM EVOLUTION

    Get PDF
It is shown that the existence of a time operator in the Liouville space representation of both classical and quantum evolution provides a mechanism for effective entropy change of physical states. In particular, an initially effectively pure state can evolve under the usual unitary evolution to an effectively mixed state.Comment: 20 pages.
