Dear Videogames, Letter Writing and the Dear Ada Project

Dear Ada is a Feminists in Games supported project which invites members of the videogame community to submit letters on the subject of gender and games. Letter writing as part of a long feminist tradition of life writing is chronicled by Margaretta Jolly in In Love and Struggle, which spans generations of writers including letters between mothers and daughters, queer love letters, political movements and letters after the advent of email. This article reflects on the Dear Ada letters and how the project is situated within a larger feminist epistolary history

Matching Multiple Rigid Domain Decompositions of Proteins

We describe efficient methods for consistently coloring and visualizing collections of rigid cluster decompositions obtained from variations of a protein structure, and lay the foundation for more complex setups, that may involve different computational and experimental methods. The focus here is on three biological applications: the conceptually simpler problems of visualizing results of dilution and mutation analyses, and the more complex task of matching decompositions of multiple Nucleic Magnetic Resonance (NMR) models of the same protein. Implemented into the KINematics And RIgidity (KINARI) web server application, the improved visualization techniques give useful information about protein folding cores, help examining the effect of mutations on protein flexibility and function, and provide insights into the structural motions of Protein Data Bank proteins solved with solution NMR. These tools have been developed with the goal of improving and validating rigidity analysis as a credible coarse-grained model capturing essential information about a protein\u27s slow motions near the native state

A Research Data Services FAIRytale

Whether for assignments or research, the faculty, staff, and students at all academic institutions will work with data. Some patrons seek assistance finding open data for their projects, while others would like lessons in data analysis or visualization. Data sharing is increasingly required by journals or funding agencies, and researchers may find this challenging while also navigating Data Use Agreements, confidentiality concerns, data documentation, locating a suitable repository, and more. Furthermore, most funding agencies require a data management plan be included in grant proposals to ensure that researchers are prepared to follow best practices regarding the collection, storage, security, and sharing of their data. Therefore, data literacy education and research data services are essential. Unfortunately, research data services are frequently decentralized at academic institutions, with services being offered by many departments who don’t always collaborate on outreach. Research reproducibility and ethics, as embodied in the FAIR principles for data sharing, align with libraries’ values, making them a natural home for data support and services. In the last several years, our Libraries have made progress with outreach to campus departments involved in aspects of data literacy and management, resulting in a coordinated Data Services group with representatives from those departments led by librarians. In this session, we will discuss the role of Data Services as a larger part of the institution’s Research Data Management agenda, highlight some of our accomplishments, admit some of our challenges, and share some of our near-term next steps and big picture goals

Towards Sequence-Based DNA Flexibility Analysis

In this poster, we present an extension to our freely available KINARI-Web server to identify rigid and flexible regions of nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid complexes contained in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The goal is to explore the effect of DNA and RNA on the rigidity and stability of these structures. We also propose an approach for determining DNA rigidity based solely on sequence. Currently, only the rigidity of DNA molecules whose structures have been deposited in the PDB (approx. \u3c4,000 files) can be analyzed. Once fine-tuned and validated, this new coordinate-free method for investigating DNA flexibility could be applied to the more than 135 million sequences in GenBank, and to nanostructure design

Implementing quality deer management on your property (2015)

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the most popular game species in Missouri, and the state's deer population is estimated to be about 1.4 million. The current success of Missouri's deer management program is a tribute to the science of wildlife management, the increase in suitable habitat and regulation of season length and bag limits. Historically, deer managers concentrated on increasing deer populations by protecting antlerless deer from harvest. Recent research has demonstrated that the overall quality of a deer herd can be improved through management practices commonly referred to as quality deer management (QDM). Numerous landowners and hunting clubs across the United States have successfully adopted this approach to managing white-tailed deer populations. An increasing number of Missouri deer hunters and landowners are interested in the potential for implementing QDM strategies on property they hunt or own.New 10/11; Reviewed 1/15/Web

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is one of Missouri's most valuable wildlife resources (Figure 1). Each year, hunters spend more than six million hunter-days in the field pursuing the whitetail, contributing $1.1 billion annually to the Missouri economy and supporting over 12,000 jobs in the process. Hunting the white-tailed deer is a tremendously popular form of recreation that carries great traditions. Deer also provide other recreational opportunities, as well as aesthetic, economic and educational value

Videogame Walkthroughs in Educational Settings: Challenges, Successes, and Suggestions for Future Use

In this paper we describe the use of videogame walkthroughs implemented in three different educational contexts: 1) an informal learning environment where 11-12 year-olds used text and video walkthroughs to supplement their Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker play during an optional, lunch-time video game club in their school library; 2) a formal learning environment where grade six (11-12 year-old) students used a written walkthrough for Lost Winds 2: Winter of the Melodias played as part of their Language Arts classroom; and 3) the use of a written walkthroughs by Grade 7 and 8 teachers as part of their preparations to teach a game-based learning unit in their Geography classrooms. Taken together, we argue that while walkthroughs can be useful pedagogical tools when using videogames in classroom settings, the social and cultural contexts in which they are introduced must be carefully considered in order for their effectiveness to be fully realized
