State Enterprise Zone Programs: Have They Worked?
Peters and Fisher evaluate 75 EZs located in 13 states to gain an understanding of the overall effectiveness of state enterprise zones. Faced with a paucity of data on EZs that could be used in standard economic analysis, the authors employ a hypothetical firm model in which they apply various EZ and non-EZ incentives to financial statements created for a set of typical firms. Observing the impacts of both types of incentives on firms\u27 financial statements allow Peters and Fisher to predict the firms\u27 resulting behavior. Synthetic Spectra of Hydrodynamic Models of Type Ia Supernovae
We present detailed NLTE synthetic spectra of hydrodynamic SNe Ia models. We
make no assumptions about the form of the spectrum at the inner boundary. We
calculate both Chandrasekhar-mass deflagration models and sub-Chandrasekhar
``helium detonators.'' Gamma-ray deposition is handled in a simple, accurate
manner. We have parameterized the storage of energy that arises from the time
dependent deposition of radioactive decay energy in a reasonable manner, that
spans the expected range. We find that the Chandrasekhar-mass deflagration
model W7 of Nomoto etal shows good agreement with the observed spectra of SN
1992A and SN 1994D, particularly in the UV, where our models are expected to be
most accurate. The sub-Chandrasekhar models do not reproduce the UV deficit
observed in normal SNe Ia. They do bear some resemblance to sub-luminous SNe
Ia, but the shape of the spectra (i.e. the colors) are opposite to that of the
observed ones and the intermediate mass element lines such as Si II, and Ca II
are extremely weak, which seems to be a generic difficulty of the models.
Although the sub-Chandrasekhar models have a significant helium abundance
(unlike Chandrasekhar-mass models), helium lines are not prominent in the
spectra near maximum light and thus do not act as a spectral signature for the

Exact factorization of correlation functions in 2-D critical percolation
By use of conformal field theory, we discover several exact factorizations of
higher-order density correlation functions in critical two-dimensional
percolation. Our formulas are valid in the upper half-plane, or any conformally
equivalent region. We find excellent agreement of our results with
high-precision computer simulations. There are indications that our formulas

The Schistosoma mansoni Cytochrome P450 (CYP3050A1) Is Essential for Worm Survival and Egg Development.
Schistosomiasis affects millions of people in developing countries and is responsible for more than 200,000 deaths annually. Because of toxicity and limited spectrum of activity of alternatives, there is effectively only one drug, praziquantel, available for its treatment. Recent data suggest that drug resistance could soon be a problem. There is therefore the need to identify new drug targets and develop drugs for the treatment of schistosomiasis. Analysis of the Schistosoma mansoni genome sequence for proteins involved in detoxification processes found that it encodes a single cytochrome P450 (CYP450) gene. Here we report that the 1452 bp open reading frame has a characteristic heme-binding region in its catalytic domain with a conserved heme ligating cysteine, a hydrophobic leader sequence present as the membrane interacting region, and overall structural conservation. The highest sequence identity to human CYP450s is 22%. Double stranded RNA (dsRNA) silencing of S. mansoni (Sm)CYP450 in schistosomula results in worm death. Treating larval or adult worms with antifungal azole CYP450 inhibitors results in worm death at low micromolar concentrations. In addition, combinations of SmCYP450-specific dsRNA and miconazole show additive schistosomicidal effects supporting the hypothesis that SmCYP450 is the target of miconazole. Treatment of developing S. mansoni eggs with miconazole results in a dose dependent arrest in embryonic development. Our results indicate that SmCYP450 is essential for worm survival and egg development and validates it as a novel drug target. Preliminary structure-activity relationship suggests that the 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethan-1-ol moiety of miconazole is necessary for activity and that miconazole activity and selectivity could be improved by rational drug design
Cluster Approximation for the Farey Fraction Spin Chain
We consider the Farey fraction spin chain in an external field . Utilising
ideas from dynamical systems, the free energy of the model is derived by means
of an effective cluster energy approximation. This approximation is valid for
divergent cluster sizes, and hence appropriate for the discussion of the
magnetizing transition. We calculate the phase boundaries and the scaling of
the free energy. At we reproduce the rigorously known asymptotic
temperature dependence of the free energy. For , our results are
largely consistent with those found previously using mean field theory and
