Squeezed state purification with linear optics and feed forward
A scheme for optimal and deterministic linear optical purification of mixed
squeezed Gaussian states is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The
scheme requires only linear optical elements and homodyne detectors, and allows
the balance between purification efficacy and squeezing degradation to be
controlled. One particular choice of parameters gave a ten-fold reduction of
the thermal noise with a corresponding squeezing degradation of only 11%. We
prove optimality of the protocol, and show that it can be used to enhance the
performance of quantum informational protocols such as dense coding and
entanglement generation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
New Results from NA49
We present recent results of the SPS experiment NA49 on production of strange
particles and event-by-event fluctuations of mean and of charged particle
ratios in central Pb+Pb collisions at various beam energies (40, 80, 158 AGeV)
as well as in different collisions at 158 AGeV, going from p+p over light-ion
collisions to peripheral and central Pb+Pb.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures (in eps) talk given at XXXI International

Unusual cause of mechanical ileus: abdominal cocoon syndrome
A 38-year-old black male patient was admitted with diarrhea and nausea over two days and aggravating pain in the meso- and epigastium that resolved after urination. He had no surgical history and only an episode of pulmonary tuberculosis five years earlier, for which he was properly treated. Physical examination revealed a tender and distended abdomen with clangorous sounds. His temperature was 36.1°C. Routine laboratory blood analyses were normal. An abdominal ultrasound revealed diffuse distention of the small intestine. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a conglomerate of dilated small bowel loops in the meso- and hypogastrium, suggestive for a supravesical mechanical small bowel obstruction. Peritoneal thickening was seen in the right epigastrium (Figure A, white arrow). An explorative laparoscopy revealed a whitish, thickened membrane encapsulating the small bowels as a ‘cocoon’ (Figure B). Extensive adhesiolysis released an intestinal kinking in the lower abdomen, just above the bladder. No resection was needed. Histopathology of the membrane showed fibrocollagenous tissue with mixed inflammatory infiltrate
Correlator Analysis of Multiparticle Events
A procedure for the evaluation of correlators of any order in a reasonable
computer time is presented. Connection between correlators and fluctuations of
the event mean values of observables is discussed. Extension of the procedure
to event-by-event approach is suggested. The usefulness of the method is
demonstrated using the events simulated within various models of multipaticle
production.Comment: LaTeX, 15 pages including 4 table
