This article contributes to a better understanding of tourists’ environmental concerns, assuming that distance from the place of residence is relevant. The analysis is conducted for EU-27 countries, combining micro-data, correspond to the Flash Eurobarometer 281 drawn from the European Commission and macro-data from different international sources. Since the environmental attitudes may vary across different cultures and societies, the individuals should be nested into countries. Therefore, it is inappropriate to analyze data using traditional regression analysis. Mixed model specifically may take into account such hierarchical data structure considering simultaneously individual and contextual variables. A general finding from the estimates indicated that significant variance exists within and among nations in the level of environmental support. This finding is congruent with the necessity of simultaneously assessing the effect of individual and country levels variables on environmental support across the European countries. Additionally, this paper demonstrates that people who are actively involved in protecting the environment at home do not maintain this type of behavior when they go on vacation, which may have negative environmental consequences on destinations, albeit involuntarily. The environmental concerns of tourists when travelling domestically were around 15% higher than those travelling abroad. Additionally, the random slope variance regarding destination choice parameter is statistically significant, which allows us to explore the underpinning behind the heterogeneous pattern across countries. Our results can be of great importance to minimize the negative environmental impacts when traveling, and represents an interesting starting point to reduce the environmentally unsustainable behaviors in the tourist field

The objective of this study is to know which exogenous factors condition the efficiency of the municipalities with tourist orientation. This study is one of the few publications based on the efficiency of tourism municipalities. Unlike most of the research that assesses municipal efficiency in general, it is believed that this document contributes to related literature by offering ideas to relatively inefficient tourism municipalities about improving efficiency.

Holiday rentals in cultural tourism destinations: a comparison of booking.com-based daily rate estimation for Seville and Porto

Multiple variables determine holiday rentals’ price composition in cultural tourism destinations. This study sought, first, to test a model including the variables with the greatest impact on tourism accommodations’ prices in these destinations and, second, to demonstrate the proposed model’s applicability to cultural city destinations by identifying the adaptations needed to apply it to different contexts. Two cities were selected for the model application—Seville in Spain and Porto in Portugal—both of which are located in different countries and are well-known cultural tourism destinations. The data were extracted from Booking.com because this accommodations platform has adapted its offer to the sharing economy, becoming one of the most important players in the market, and because research on holiday rentals using data from Booking.com is scarce. The results show that the variables used are relevant and highlight the adaptations necessary for specific cultural tourism destinations, thereby indicating that the model can be applied to all cultural tourism destinations. The proposed approach can help holiday rental managers select the correct tools for determining their accommodation units’ daily rates according to their product and marketing context’s characteristics.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

PurposeThis study aimed to assess whether sociodemographic variables explain significant differences in attitudes towards transforming academic conferences into more sustainable events.Design/methodology/approachAn analytical model of participants' attitudes towards sustainable conferences based on literature review as well as the theories of reasoned action and planned behaviour was developed and applied to a sample of 532 surveyed individuals from 68 countries who regularly attended academic conferences in the last five years prior to 2020. The results were refined using statistical and computational techniques to achieve more empirically robust conclusions.FindingsResults reveal that sociodemographic variables such as attendees' gender and age explain differences in attitudes. Women and older adults have stronger pro-environmental attitudes regarding event sustainability. On the other hand, attitudes towards more sustainable academic conferences are quite strong and positive overall. More sustainable events' venues, catering, conference materials and accommodations strongly influence attendees' attitudes towards more sustainable conferences. The strength of attitudes was weaker towards transportation.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, the analyses focused on only aspects related to the attendees' attitudes. Assessing their real behaviour would complete this research. The geographical areas defined by the U.N. and used in this study have the limitation of combining highly developed countries and developing countries in the same geographical area, for example, the Americas and Asia and the Pacific.Practical implicationsSpecific socio-demographic variables' effects on attitudes towards sustainable academic conferences can indicate how organisers can best promote these events according to attendees' characteristics and develop differentiated marketing campaigns. For women and older adults, event sustainability should be emphasised as a competitive strategy to promote events and attract these audiences. Marketing strategies for younger attendees (under 30 years old) could focus on technology, networking or attractive social programmes. Sustainable venues, catering, conference materials and accommodations are easier to promote. Event organisers should encourage participants to make more environmentally friendly decisions regarding more sustainable event transport.Social implicationsA strategy based on promoting the event as contributing to sustainable development could educate attendees and put them on the path to developing stronger positive attitudes regarding sustainability and more sustainable behaviours. Sustainable academic conferences can educate students, organisers, service providers and delegates through their involvement in sustainable practices.Originality/valueTo our best knowledge, this research is the first to assess whether sociodemographic variables explain significant differences in attitudes towards the sustainable transformation of academic conferences.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In the context of the official Master's Degree in Design and Product Development and Industrial Installations, we present a number of project proposals to be developed as research projects in the subject Design and Manufacturing ComputerAided (Enrichment Program I). Regarding the final project of the Master, different visualization techniques with global illumination models combined with research techniques in computer applications design with strong design orientation have been studied. These results have led us to innovate from an educational point of view by incorporating new techniques and methods in subjects such as Photorealistic Representation and Computer Animation. In this paper a series of techniques are presented, which have been developed from the three-dimensional modelling of the product to the synthetic images, allowing us to get a picture of synthetic images not only from the original product, but also being able to change different shapes and appearances, as well as the integration in different environments of use or operation, even before being manufactured

Valuation models for holiday rentals’ daily rates: price composition based on Booking.com

    Get PDF
In recent years, the number of sharing economy accommodations has grown exponentially due to the Internet and peer-to-peer networks, which has made researchers increasingly interested in analysing this new type of lodging. This study sought to develop models that determine the significant variables for the daily price of staying in holiday rentals based on data extracted from Booking.com and other sources. The hedonic pricing method (HPM) was selected to conduct the research as this methodology has been widely used in real estate valuation and hotel daily rate determination; however, the HPM is still rarely used for holiday rentals. The study focused on the city of Seville, where a notable increase in holiday rentals has been observed in recent years. Variables related to the accommodation typology, including location, size and equipment, as well as seasonality, are the most influential factors in the proposed models. These results are of interest to both owners and users of holiday rentals and can help these individuals to determine if the price of a stay is what would commonly be offered in the market under normal circumstances.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
