    THz-PCR Based on Resonant Coupling between Middle Infrared and DNA Carbonyl Vibrations

    The carbonyl groups of deoxyribonucleotide can resonantly couple with 53 THz middle infrared, which can highly transmit water without ionization-based damage to DNA molecules. Herein, we predict that vibrational coupling with THz irradiation could lower down the hybridization landscape of nucleic acids and thus affect DNA replication. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a measure, we found that THz shining can reduce the denature temperature of DNA duplexes by about 3 °C, which allows one to conduct PCR at lower temperature, facilitating long-time amplification reaction without losing enzymatic fidelity, i.e., normal PCR should be carried out at denaturing temperature ∼4 °C higher than the melting temperature (Tm), but THz-PCR only requires temperature ∼1 °C higher than Tm due to the nonthermal effect of THz shining. Moreover, the melting time can also be shortened to 1/5 due to the enhanced vibration coupling with 53 THz irradiation. We proposed THz-PCR as an innovated DNA amplification technique with ultrahigh specificity and sensitivity and also successfully demonstrated its advantages in forensic detections

    <p>RNA was extracted from kernel pericarp (20 DAP), reverse transcribed, and PCR-amplified using primers complementary to both <i>p1</i> and <i>p2</i> transcripts. The progenitor allele <i>(P1-rr11)</i> shows amplification of a 605-bp band from <i>p1.</i> The <i>p-ww2</i> and <i>P-oo</i> alleles show amplification of a 522-bp band characteristic of the 5′ region of the <i>p2</i> gene. The <i>p1-ww1112</i> allele has a deletion of <i>p1;</i> the native <i>p2</i> gene is intact in this allele, but is not expressed in kernel pericarp.</p

    Kinetics of Homoallylic/Homobenzylic Rearrangement Reactions under Combustion Conditions

    Homoallylic/homobenzylic radicals refer to typical radicals with the radical site located at the β position from the vinyl/phenyl group. These radicals are largely involved in combustion systems, such as the pyrolysis or oxidation of alkenes, cycloalkanes, and aromatics. The 1,2-vinyl/phenyl migration via two steps (cyclization/fission) is a peculiar reaction type for the homoallylic/homobenzylic radicals, entitled homoallylic/homobenzylic rearrangement, which has been studied by theoretical calculations including the Hirshfeld atomic charge analysis in the present work. With the help of rate constant calculations, the competition between this reaction channel and other possible pathways under combustion temperatures (500–2000 K) were evaluated. Analogous 1,3- and 1,4-vinyl/phenyl migration reactions for similar radicals with the radical sites located at the γ and δ positions from the vinyl/phenyl group were also computed. The results indicate that the 1,2-vinyl/phenyl migration is particularly important for the kinetics of unimolecular reactions of homoallylic radicals under 1500 K; nevertheless, it still has noticeable contribution at higher temperature. For those radicals with the radical site at the γ or δ positions, the respective 1,3- or 1,4-vinyl/phenyl migration channel plays an insignificant role under combustion conditions

    BackgroundStudies investigating the relationship between gestational dyslipidemia and small for gestational age (SGA) have reported differing results. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and 11-item checklist. According to the classification of GHD parameters, meta-analyses reporting cases regarding total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) were performed respectively. If I2 ≥ 50%, considered to demonstrate substantial heterogeneity, the random effect model was employed. Otherwise, a fixed effect model was employed.ResultsEight studies (14,213 pregnancies) were included. Decreased levels of TC (MD −0.13; 95% CI −0.24 to −0.02), TG (MD −0.09; 95% CI −0.14 to −0.03) and LDL-C (MD −0.12; 95% CI −0.23 to −0.00) were risk factors for SGA infant birth.     Meaning in Life (MIL) is a protective factor that buffers the impact of COVID-19 epidemic on emotions. Our study aimed to explore whether photographic intervention based on MIL could increase Positive Affect (PA) and mitigate Negative Affect (NA), and whether Future Self-Continuity (FSC) functioned as a mediator between them. In this study, 90 college students were randomly divided into an intervention group or a control group. Participants in the intervention group were asked to take a photo and describe it every 2 days lasting 2 weeks. All the participants in the two groups were measured by the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, and Future Self-Continuity Scale before and after the intervention. The results showed that: (1) Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in baseline levels of MIL, PA and NA, and FSC between intervention and control groups. (2) In the intervention group, compared to pre-test, the scores of MIL, PA, and FSC of post-test increased significantly, and the score of NA of post-test decreased significantly. (3) After the intervention, the scores of MIL, PA, and FSC in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group; NA score in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. (4) In terms of the difference score (post-test minus pre-test), FSC was a mediator between MIL and PA. Our study demonstrated that photographic intervention could effectively improve college students’ MIL, PA, and FSC while mitigating NA. Moreover, MIL could significantly enhance PA by the mediating role of FSC.</p

    Robustness of rigid and adaptive networks to species loss

    <div><p>Controversies in the complexity-stability debate have been attributed to the methodologies used such as topological vs. dynamical approaches or rigid vs. adaptive foraging behaviour of species. Here, we use a bipartite network model that incorporates both topological and population dynamics to investigate the robustness of 60 real ecological networks to the loss of generalist and specialist species. We compare the response in both adaptive and rigid networks. Our results show that the removal of generalists leads to the most secondary extinctions, implying that conservation strategies should aim to protect generalist species in the ecosystem. We also show that adaptive behaviour renders networks vulnerable to species loss at initial stages but enhances long term stability of the system. However, whether adaptive networks are more robust to species loss than rigid ones depends on the structure of the network. Specifically, adaptive networks with modularity < 0.3 are more robust than rigid networks of the same modularity. Interestingly, the more modular a network is, the less robust it is to external perturbations.</p></div

    Effects of Different Grazing Intensities on Grassland Production in China: A Meta-Analysis

    <div><p>Background</p><p>Grazing is one of the main grassland disturbances in China, and it is essential to quantitatively evaluate the effects of different grazing intensities on grassland production for grassland carbon budget and sustainable use.</p><p>Methods</p><p>A meta-analysis was conducted to reveal general response patterns of grassland production to grazing in China. We used weighted log response ratio to assess the effect size, and 95% confidence intervals to give a sense of the precision of the estimate. Grazing effects were estimated as a percentage change relative to control (%).</p><p>Results</p><p>A total of 48 studies, including 251 data sets, were included in the meta-analysis. Grazing significantly decreased total biomass by 58.34% (95% CI: −72.04%∼−37.94%, CI: Confidence Interval), increased root/shoot ratio by 30.58% and decreased litter by 51.41% (95% CI: −63.31%∼−35.64%). Aboveground biomass and belowground biomass decreased significantly by 42.77% (95% CI: −48.88%∼−35.93%) and 23.13% (95% CI: −39.61%∼−2.17%), respectively. However, biomass responses were dependent on grazing intensity and environmental conditions. Percentage changes in aboveground biomass to grazing showed a quadratic relationship with precipitation in light grazing intensity treatment and a linear relationship in moderate and heavy grazing intensity treatment, but did not change with temperature. Grazing effects on belowground biomass did not change with precipitation or temperature. Compared to the global average value, grazing had greater negative effects on grassland production in China.</p><p>Conclusions</p><p>Grazing has negative effects on grassland biomass and the grazing effects change with environmental conditions and grazing intensity, therefore flexible rangeland management tactics that suit local circumstances are necessary to take into consideration for balancing the demand of grassland utilization and conservation.</p></div
