    Retrospective Catalogue Conversion in Selected Federal University Libraries in Southern Nigeria

    This study examined the process of retrospective catalogue conversion (RCC) in selected federal university libraries in Nigeria. The specific purposes aimed identifying the resources for RCC, methods employed, competency possessed by the library staff for the process, problems associated with it and the appropriate strategies. The design of the study is descriptive survey, areas of the study were University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, University of Lagos, Lagos State and University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State and the population consisted of 42 professional and paraprofessional librarians. Findings reveal thus: basic resources are networked computers, scanners and printers; proficiency in use of computer is the basic competency; problems include inadequate computer systems, frequent change in technology and poor internet connectivity. It recommended that Nigerian university libraries will fare better when adequate computer systems are made available, as well as training of staff, dedicated internet bandwidth among others

    A Standard Public Information Center for Effective National Development: The Study of Local Communities in Kogi State of Nigeria

    The study was conducted by 700 communities’ dwellers in Kogi-West Constituency. The sample was made up 100 accessible local communities’ dwellers from each seven Local Government Area. They include Ijumu, Kabba-Bunu, Yagba-West, Yagba-East, Mopamuro, Kogi, Lokoja. All the accessible respondents from each Local Government were used to determine whether the communities’ dwellers need public information center. The result revealed that, the dwellers need such center. Descriptive survey design were used, the instruments for data collection are questionnaire and interview to indicate the information needs and nature of information resources both print and electronic to be provided in the center after the establishment.     Awareness and Utilization of Electronic Databases for Scholarly Research by Faculty of Education Lecturers in Federal Universities in South East, Nigeria

    This study was designed to investigate the awareness and utilization of electronic databases for scholarly research by faculty of education lecturers in federal universities in South East, Nigeria. Six (6) research questions were formulated to guide the study. In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive survey design which was considered most appropriate for this study. The study was conducted in the South East zone with a population of five hundred and ninety-one (591) lecturers in faculties of education from three selected federal universities. The instruments used for data collection was the questionnaire and interview schedule. The validity of the research instrument was established by three experts. One of the instruments which is a questionnaire, contains 86 items from cluster 1-6. A total of 591 copies of the questionnaires were distributed and 527 were filled and returned for the study. Data obtained from the questionnaire was analyzed using mean and percentages. Findings from the study revealed that faculty of education lecturers are aware of the electronic databases highlighted in the study and electronic databases listed are utilized by faculty of education lecturers for scholarly research. The study identified erratic power, shaky network, indifference, know-how deficit and poor computer literacy as hiccups of awareness and utilization of electronic databases for scholarly research. The study recommends that institutional heads and management should be sensitized on the need and importance of subscribing to relevant databases; Training and Re-training of lecturers as well as library staff should be constant; Internet facilities of the University like the local and wide area networks (LAN and WAN) should also be improved and maintained to facilitate easy access to the databases among others

    Malaria research in Nigeria: a scientometric appraisal

    Background: Malaria is an endemic tropical disease, which has seriously ravaged the African continent. In Nigeria, the disease has caused high infant, adolescent and maternal morbidity and mortality. Also, the scourge has serious economic implications. This research, therefore, scientometrically analyzed all the intellectual activities of the stake holders to see the directions of research on Malaria in Nigeria.Objectives: This research attempted to find out the quantum volume of research activities on malaria, patterns of research collaborations through authorship, subject, and geographical/ serial distributions of articles.Methods: Data for this study were sourced from the databank created by the Federal Ministry of Health of Nigeria. The data were transcribed on cataloguing cards and Subject analysis was done by using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), 2010 edition. Bradford's Mathematical method was used for the analysis of data transcribed.Results: There was a high degree of authorship collaboration to the maximum of twenty authors. Five authorship collaborations ranked the highest with 67 (16.9%) of articles. Yearly distributions showed year 2009 pooling 92 of articles (23.2%), followed by 88 articles (22.2%) in 2008. Lagos state recorded the highest with 52 articles (13.1%). Malaria Journal ranked the best in terms of serial distributions with 32 articles (9.1%). 86 subjects were analyzed and plasmodium falciparum had the highest number of articles (41) of articles published.Conclusion: This work showed the research activities on Malaria disease in Nigeria, the growth of research findings, collaboration patterns of authorship and subject/geographical/serial distributions of articles were clearly displayed statistically
