Investment under ambiguity with the best and worst in mind
Recent literature on optimal investment has stressed the difference between the impact of risk and the impact of ambiguity - also called Knightian uncertainty - on investors' decisions. In this paper, we show that a decision maker's attitude towards ambiguity is similarly crucial for investment decisions. We capture the investor's individual ambiguity attitude by applying alpha-MEU preferences to a standard investment problem. We show that the presence of ambiguity often leads to an increase in the subjective project value, and entrepreneurs are more eager to invest. Thereby, our investment model helps to explain differences in investment behavior in situations which are objectively identical
Association of Oral Disease with 12 Selected Variables: I. Periodontal Disease
The association of periodontal disease with 12 selected variables, considered to be intrinsic-systemic factors, was examined. A probability sample of 324 subjects, ≥ 20 years old, was studied. The statistical analyses included simple, partial, and multiple correlations, and linear regression.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66595/2/10.1177_00220345680470031901.pd
Approximate Bisimulations for Sodium Channel Dynamics
Abstract. This paper shows that, in the context of the Iyer et al. 67-variable cardiac myocycte model (IMW), it is possible to replace the detailed 13-state continuous-time MDP model of the sodium-channel dy-namics, with a much simpler Hodgkin-Huxley (HH)-like two-state sodium-channel model, while only incurring a bounded approximation error. The technical basis for this result is the construction of an approximate bisim-ulation between the HH and IMW channel models, both of which are input-controlled (voltage in this case) continuous-time Markov chains. The construction of the appropriate approximate bisimulation, as well as the overall result regarding the behavior of this modified IMW model, in-volves: (1) The identification of the voltage-dependent parameters of the m and h gates in the HH-type channel, based on the observations of the IMW channel. (2) Proving that the distance between observations of the two channels never exceeds a given error. (3) Exploring the sensitivity of the overall IMW model to the HH-type sodium-channel approximation. Our extensive simulation results experimentally validate our findings, for varying IMW-type input stimuli
Nucleosomes in gene regulation: theoretical approaches
This work reviews current theoretical approaches of biophysics and
bioinformatics for the description of nucleosome arrangements in chromatin and
transcription factor binding to nucleosomal organized DNA. The role of
nucleosomes in gene regulation is discussed from molecular-mechanistic and
biological point of view. In addition to classical problems of this field,
actual questions of epigenetic regulation are discussed. The authors selected
for discussion what seem to be the most interesting concepts and hypotheses.
Mathematical approaches are described in a simplified language to attract
attention to the most important directions of this field
History of clinical transplantation
How transplantation came to be a clinical discipline can be pieced together by perusing two volumes of reminiscences collected by Paul I. Terasaki in 1991-1992 from many of the persons who were directly involved. One volume was devoted to the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), with particular reference to the human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) that are widely used today for tissue matching.1 The other focused on milestones in the development of clinical transplantation.2 All the contributions described in both volumes can be traced back in one way or other to the demonstration in the mid-1940s by Peter Brian Medawar that the rejection of allografts is an immunological phenomenon.3,4 © 2008 Springer New York
Mineral nutrition of vegetable crops: XXV - Mineral nutrition of new zealand spinach plant (Tetragonia expansa Murr.)
The present work was carried out in order to study: a - the effect of omission and presence of the macronutrients and boron on the growth of the plants; b - deficiency symptoms of macronutrients, as well of boron; c - the effect of the deficiency of each nutrient on the chemical composition of the plants. Young spinach plants were grown in pots containing pure quartz sand. Several times a day the plants were irrigated by percolation with nutrient solutions. The treatments were: complete solution and deficient solution, in which each one of the macronutrients was omitted as well boron. Soon as the malnutrition symptoms appered, the plants were harvested and analysed chemically. - symptoms of malnutrition are easily observed for N, K, Ca and B. - symptoms of malnutrition for P, S and Mg are not easily identified.
Comparison of SPAMM, HARP and DENSE in a Deformable Phantom
A number of techniques are available for the measurement of displacement and strain in the heart including SPAtial Modulation of Magnetization (SPAMM) (1) followed by tag line detection, CSPAMM followed by HARmonic Phase (HARP) analysis (2), and Displacement ENcoding with Stimulated Echoes (DENSE) (3). However, it is unclear which method gives the most accurate results in practice
