Assessment of Students Performances in Biology: Implication for Measurements and Evaluation of Learning

Scienceeducation is believed to be a vital tool for individual and societal development at large. The persistent low levels of students' achievement in sciences at the various public examinations in Nigeria have continued to draw the attention of major stakeholders in education. This study examined academic achievement of Senior Secondary School students in biology and gender difference in students' achievement was examined. Ex-post facto design of descriptive research was adopted for the study. A proforma was used to collect data from a sample of two hundred (200) students, selected using stratified random sampling procedure from the Science secondary schools in Kano state Nigeria. The data collected were the students' performances in biology achievement tests. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and independent-sample t-test. Overall results showed that the test internal consistency reliability is low and unsatisfactory; the students performed below average (M=47.02, SD=16.493 (47%). Similarly, gender difference exists in biology performance with another significant difference between performance of urban and rural school students. The study concludes that, biology test used in Kano state qualifying examinations to assess students potential ability in biology is not a reliable measurement tool and that, academic performance of students in biology is unsatisfactory and evidence of differential performance between gender and schools locations. The implication for measurements and evaluation of learning as well as recommendations has been discussed

Scaling behavior of a one-dimensional correlated disordered electronic System

A one-dimensional diagonal tight binding electronic system with correlated disorder is investigated. The correlation of the random potential is exponentially decaying with distance and its correlation length diverges as the concentration of "wrong sign" approaches to 1 or 0. The correlated random number sequence can be generated easily with a binary sequence similar to that of a one-dimensional spin glass system. The localization length (LL) and the integrated density of states (IDOS) for long chains are computed. A comparison with numerical results is made with the recently developed scaling technique results. The Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) is also adopted to obtain scaling functions for both the LL and the IDOS. We confirmed that the scaling functions show a crossover near the band edge and establish their relation to the concentration. For concentrations near to 0 or 1 (longer correlation length case), the scaling behavior is followed only for a very limited range of the potential strengths.Comment: will appear in PR

CP-odd Phase Correlations and Electric Dipole Moments

We revisit the constraints imposed by electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons and heavy atoms on new CP-violating sources within supersymmetric theories. We point out that certain two-loop renormalization group corrections induce significant mixing between the basis-invariant CP-odd phases. In the framework of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM), the CP-odd invariant related to the soft trilinear A-phase at the GUT scale, theta_A, induces non-trivial and distinct CP-odd phases for the three gaugino masses at the weak scale. The latter give one-loop contributions to EDMs enhanced by tan beta, and can provide the dominant contribution to the electron EDM induced by theta_A. We perform a detailed analysis of the EDM constraints within the CMSSM, exhibiting the reach, in terms of sparticle spectra, which may be obtained assuming generic phases, as well as the limits on the CP-odd phases for some specific parameter points where detailed phenomenological studies are available. We also illustrate how this reach will expand with results from the next generation of experiments which are currently in development.Comment: 31 pages, 21 eps figures; v2: additional remarks on 2-loop threshold corrections and references added; v3: typos corrected, to appear in Phys. An automated computerized examination results management system for tertiary Institution use for end semester examination and generation of transcripts as student’s records processing in a hybrid system is design to overwhelmed the manual or computerized method used for students’ end of semester academic result processing for some institution which was found to be complex and tedium , especially when apply for a large number of students or hybrid system in term of different program. The processing of result in term of grade collection on different courses may involves the entire process time-consuming, error prone and inability to carry out real time control system. The system to be designed is meant to perform student result administration of all facet.  The method to be employ to achieve this approach is top – down hierarchical approach. The expected result show that result and transcript generation was achieved on real time and the monitoring of students with outstanding subject are transfer to a particular partition in the database, where they are monitored on the duration of academic studies before transfer to the first, second and third probations and finally terminated. The system presents a single platform that will be used to manage the processing of all examination records both in part time and full time within the institution. The data used for testing was obtained from the  Department of Academic Planning (DAP) Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos State. In conclusion, the deployment of academic student processing result and transcripts has demonstrated high sense of efficiency, reliability, error free and real time actualization of student position and good standing. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can be described as aircraft that do not need any presence of pilots inside it. Basically, UAV is come out in a small aircraft sothat the aircraft can be easily controlled by the people from afar[1]. The UAV’s motor support bar length control systems are the UAV’s control systems that move according to the variable arm length movement and also a constant revolution of the propeller speeds. The purpose of the study is to run the dynamic analysis at the UAV’s motor support bar length control systems and also to enhance the UAV’s mathematical modellingby using the SOLIDWORKS®software which involved in using both CAD and CAE systems[2]. The detaileddesign is used SOLIDWORKS®software to conduct the static and dynamic analysis of UAV’s motor support bar length control systems. The design is restricted to the arm due to the critical part that has the highest vibration at the UAV’s motor support bar length control systems. The results that obtain from the study from the static and dynamic analysis are the displacement of the motor, Von Misses stress of the arm, and also the resonance frequency that will give the modes shape to the systems

Discovery of a 6.4 keV Emission Line in a Burst from SGR 1900+14

    Get PDF
We present evidence of a 6.4 keV emission line during a burst from the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) monitored this source extensively during its outburst in the summer of 1998. A strong burst observed on August 29, 1998 revealed a number of unique properties. The burst exhibits a precursor and is followed by a long (~ 1000 s) tail modulated at the 5.16 s stellar rotation period. The precursor has a duration of 0.85 s and shows both significant spectral evolution as well as an emission feature centered near 6.4 keV during the first 0.3 s of the event, when the X-ray spectrum was hardest. The continuum during the burst is well fit with an optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung (OTTB) spectrum with the temperature ranging from about 40 to 10 keV. The line is strong, with an equivalent width of 400 eV, and is consistent with Fe K-alpha fluorescence from relatively cool material. If the rest-frame energy is indeed 6.4 keV, then the lack of an observed redshift indicates that the source is at least 80 km above the neutron star surface. We discuss the implications of the line detection in the context of models for SGRs.Comment: AASTex preprint, 14 pages, 3 embedded figures. Accepted for Publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter

In order to probe neutron rich radioactive noble gases produced by photo-fission, a PARRNe1 experiment (Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) has been carried out at CERN. The incident electron beam of 50 MeV was delivered by the LIL machine: LEP Injector Linac. The experiment allowed to compare under the same conditions two production methods of radioactive noble gases: fission induced by fast neutrons and photo-fission. The obtained results show that the use of the electrons is a promising mode to get intense neutron rich ion beams. Thereafter, the success of this photo-fission experiment, a conceptual design for the installation at IPN Orsay of a 50 MeV electron accelerator close to the PARRNe-2 device has been worked out: ALTO Project. This work has started within a collaboration between IPNO, LAL and CERN groups.Comment: 14 pages, pdf file, International School-Seminar on Heavy-Ion Physics 7 (2002
