From The Deep
Written for Torbjorn Hultmark, this piece results from the'Rediscovering the Soprano Trombone' project that I have jointly been working on with him.
The music is based on a chorale from Cantata no 21 by J. S. Bach a piece which features a choir of trombones (SATB) to support the voices. Shortly after the mid 18th century, when this was written, the soprano trombone fell into disuse and so this music is in one sense picking up from where the instrument left off and at the same time referencing some ghostly echoes of its past
Expert supervision of an anti-skid control system of a commercial aircraft
A rule-based supervising system that incorporates fuzzy logic has been designed to back-up a conventional anti-skid braking system (ABS). Expressing the expert knowledge about the ABS in terms of linguistic rules, the supervising fuzzy system adapts the reference wheel slip of the ABS with respect to the actual runway condition. Two approaches are presented: The first uses a simple rule-based decision logic, which evaluates a new reference slip directly from the measured system variables. The second approach employes an explicit identification of the runway condition, which is used as input information of a fuzzy system to evaluate a new reference slip. This application example demonstrates
the capabilities of a parallel use of conventional control
techniques and fuzzy logic
The angular resolution of the Pierre Auger Observatory
We discuss the angular resolution obtained for events registered with the
surface detector alone and for hybrid events, i.e., those observed
simultaneously by both the surface and fluorescence detectors. The angular
accuracy of the surface detector is directly extracted from the data itself and
on an event by event basis, and is given as a function of the number of
stations triggered by the event and of the zenith angle of the shower. We
compare the angular resolution of the surface detector obtained from hybrid
events with the one obtained from the surface detector alone.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures. Presented at CRIS 2008, Malfa, Ital
A homozygous genome‐edited Sept2‐EGFP fibroblast cell line
Septins are a conserved, essential family of GTPases that interact with actin, microtubules, and membranes and form scaffolds and diffusion barriers in cells. Several of the 13 known mammalian septins assemble into nonpolar, multimeric complexes that can further polymerize into filamentous structures. While some GFP‐coupled septins have been described, overexpression of GFP‐tagged septins often leads to artifacts in localization and function. To overcome this ubiquitous problem, we have here generated a genome‐edited rat fibroblast cell line expressing Septin 2 (Sept2) coupled to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) from both chromosomal loci. We characterize these cells by genomic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for genomic integration, by western blot and reverse transcriptase‐PCR for expression, by immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation for the colocalization of septins with one another and cellular structures and for complex formation of different septins. By live cell imaging, proliferation and migration assays we investigate proper function of septins in these cells. We find that EGFP is incorporated into both chromosomal loci and only EGFP‐coupled Sept2 is expressed in homozygous cells. We find that endogenous Sept2‐EGFP exhibits expression levels, localization and incorporation into cellular septin complexes similar to the wt in these cells. The expression level of other septins is not perturbed and cell division and cell migration proceed normally. We expect our cell line to be a useful tool for the cell biology of septins, especially for quantitative biology
A symbolic sensor for an Antilock brake system of a commercial aircraft
The design of a symbolic sensor that identifies thecondition of the runway surface (dry, wet, icy, etc.) during the braking of a commercial aircraft is discussed. The purpose of such a sensor is to generate a qualitative, real-time information about the runway surface to be integrated into a future aircraft Antilock Braking System (ABS). It can be expected that this information can significantly improve the performance of ABS. For the design of the symbolic sensor different classification techniques based upon fuzzy set theory and neural networks are proposed. To develop and to verify theses classification algorithms data recorded from recent braking tests have been used. The results show that the symbolic sensor is able to correctly identify the surface condition. Overall, the application example considered in this paper demonstrates that symbolic information processing using fuzzy logic and neural networks
has the potential to provide new functions in control system design. This paper is part of a common research project between E.N.S.I.C.A. and Aerospatiale in France to study the role of the fuzzy set theory for potential applications in future aircraft control systems
