Insights on novel biologically active natural products: 7-isopentenyloxycoumarin.

    Get PDF
7-Isopentenyloxycoumarin is a prenyloxyphenylpropanoid derivative found in low concentration in a restricted number of plant families (Apiaceae, Asteraceae, and Rutaceae). Synthetic schemes were recently developed enabling sufficient quantities of the title coumarin to be obtained in order to evidence its valuable biological effects, mainly as an anticancer agent. The aim of this review is to examine the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of this compound

Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of Boronia Pinnata Sm

    Get PDF
Boronia pinnata Sm. (Rutaceae) is a plant that is widespread in New South Wales (Australia). Although there are no reports about the use of this species in the local ethnomedical traditions, recent investigations led to the characterization of several secondary metabolites, most belonging to the class of prenyloxyphenylpropanoids. Some of the compounds extracted from B. pinnata showed valuable biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory activity and in vitro inhibition of growth of Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this review is to cover what has been reported so far in the literature on the title plant from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view

    Antiviral furanosesquiterpenes from Commiphora erythraea.

    Get PDF
The crude methanolic extract obtained from C. erythraea resin was chromatographed on silica gel with solvent of increasing polarity. The extract and fractions were evaluated for cytotoxicity and antiviral activity [parainfluenza type 3 virus (PIV3)] by plaque forming units (PFU) reduction assay using HEp-2 cells (human larynx epidermoid carcinoma cell line). From the active fraction, five compounds were isolated and tested. Only two of these showed anti-PIV3 activity with a selectivity index (SI) of 66.6 and 17.5, respectively. Both the compounds are furanosesquiterpenoids

    Phytochemistry of the Genus Trichocolea

    Get PDF
The genus Trichocolea (Fam. Trichocoleaceae) comprise 31 species of liverworts, most of which are endemic in a wide geographical area of the southern Pacific Ocean including New Zealand, Tasmania, and South Australia. Although few reports have been reported on the phytochemistry and pharmacognosy of these briophytes, data reported so far show a great pharmacological potential for their secondary metabolites. Phytochemicals isolated from Trichocolea spp. include benzoate esters, flavonoids, and diterpenes. The reported biological activities of these natural compounds refer to cancer cells growth inhibitory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant effects. The aim of this short review is to examine in detail from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view what is reported in the current literature about the properties of phytopreparations or individual chemicals obtained from liverworts belonging to the Trichocolea genus

In vivo anti-inflammatory activity of some naturally occurring O- and N-prenyl secondary metabolites.

    Get PDF
A series of O- and N-prenyl secondary metabolites of insect, fungal, and plant origin have been evaluated for their topical anti-inflammatory activity using the Croton oil ear test in mice as a model of acute inflammation. Some of the tested compounds revealed an effect (ID50 = 0.31 +0.56 μmol/cm2) comparable with that of the reference non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin (ID50 = 0.23 μmol/cm2)

Fiorito S., Epifano F., Taddeo V.A., Genovese S. (2015): Oxyprenylated ferulic acid derivatives in Italian citrus liqueurs. Czech J. Food Sci., 33: 237–241. 4'-Geranyloxyferulic and boropinic acid have been recently found as phytochemicals exerting promising pharmaco logical effects as cancer chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antiHelicobacter pylori agents. An RP HPLC-UV/Vis method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of these oxyprenylated derivatives in hand made citrus-based typical Italian liqueurs like limoncello, arancello, and mandarinetto was successfully performed. Concentration values showed a great variation between the different liquors, limoncello, from Abruzzo region, being the richest one both in 4'-geranyloxyferulic acid (1.68 ± 0.03 µg/ml of liquor) and boropinic acid (0.16 ± 0.01 µg/ml). Only in two cases boropinic acid was not detected

A New Phytochemical and Anti-oxidant and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Different Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa Extracts

    Get PDF
The phytochemical composition of Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa, commonly known as crisphead lettuce, from Morocco has been re-investigated for the presence of oxyprenylated cinnamic acid and coumarin derivatives. In the mean time also the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of extracts from leaves obtained by the use of a Soxhlet apparatus have been assessed. The extracts had a high content of polyphenols with remarkable differences ranging from 0.19 to 0.38 mg gallic acid eq/mg, while the content of flavonoids ranged from 3.75 to 9.64 mg catechin eq/g. The hydroalcoholic extract with a polarity index of 5.8 displayed the best anti-oxidant, radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory activities. The same extracts were screened by reverse-phase HPLC-UV/V analysis for the presence of biologically active oxyprenylated phenylpropanoids. Only 4'-geranyloxyferulic acid was recorded in detectable amounts. Results described herein enforce the nutraceutical value and depict a potential chemopreventive dietary feeding role for crisphead lettuce
