    Comparaison morphologique de deux nouvelles espèces de Geissleria du Tage (Portugal) avec le matériel type de Navicula acceptata Hustedt et N. schoenfeldii Hustedt

    Lors d’un suivi des diatomées benthiques prélevées dans les cours d'eau du Portugal, deux espèces de Geissleria morphologiquement semblables à G. schoenfeldii (Hust.) Lange-Bert. & Metzeltin et G. acceptata (Hust.) Lange-Bert. & Metzeltin ont été trouvées en juillet 2006 dans le fleuve Tage à Amieira (Portugal). Certaines différences morphologiques ayant été constatées entre ces populations de Geissleria du Tage et les illustrations présentées dans la littérature, une étude en microscopie optique et électronique à balayage a été réalisée à partir des échantillons portugais et du matériel type de Navicula acceptata Hust. et Navicula schoenfeldii Hust. Les résultats de cette analyse ont permis une meilleure caractérisation des deux espèces de Hustedt, de définir leurs principales différences morphologiques par rapport aux deux populations de Geissleria du Tage et de conclure qu’elles peuvent être considérées comme des espèces nouvelles pour la science. La première espèce est semblable à G. schoenfeldii mais sa taille est plus réduite. La deuxième espèce ressemble à G. acceptata mais possède deux stigmas situés l’un en face de l’autre nettement visibles en microscopie optique

    Fragilaria radians (Kützing) D.M.Williams et Round, the correct name for F. gracilis (Fragilariaceae, Bacillariophyta): a critical analysis of this species complex in Europe

    Fragilaria gracilis is one of the most reported Fragilaria species in Europe, observed in a broad range of water bodies, ranging from (ultra)oligotrophic rivers to even eutrophic lakes. A revision of this im-portant taxon based on the analysis of the morphology of a large number of historic and recent populations was highly needed. In the present study, type material of Fragilaria gracilis and several related taxa such as Synedra radians, Fragilaria pseudolaevissima, S. utermoehlii, F. aquaplus, F. boreomongolica and F. tridentina together with more than 10 modern populations were investigated using LM and SEM observations. The results based on these comparisons show that Fragilaria (Synedra) radians is the name for the taxon formerly known as F. gracilis. Moreover, detailed analysis demonstrated that F. pseudolaevissima and Synedra utermoehlii are conspecific with F. radians and should be considered as heterotypic synonyms. The observations made in this study also resulted in the description of several new species, often with distinct ecologies and distribution ar-eas: Fragilaria huerlimannii Van de Vijver sp. nov., F. acerosa Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel, Jarlman et Ector sp. nov., F. neglecta Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel, Jarlman et Ector sp. nov., F. heudreana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov., F. eutraphenta Van de Vijver, Kusber et D.M.Williams sp. nov., and F. mertensiana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov.     Analysis of the Fragilaria rumpens complex (Fragilariaceae, Bacillariophyta) with the description of two new species

    The former Synedra rumpens complex has long puzzled diatom taxonomists. In the nineteenth century, many infraspecific taxa were described as varieties or forms of S. rumpens. In the present study, type material of Synedra rumpens and several infraspecific taxa such as S. rumpens var. fragilarioides and S. familiaris f. parva and f. major was investigated using LM and SEM observations. For comparison, the original material of several other relevant diatom taxa (such as Fragilaria perdelicatissima, F. spinaspeciosa, Synedra campyla, S. vaucheriae var. distans) was also analysed. The results based on these comparisons show that all infraspecific taxa should be split from Fragilaria rumpens. Fragilaria campyla is a new combination within the genus Fragilaria with F. parva and S. (rumpens var.?) familiaris f. major as synonyms. Fragilaria scotica is likewise a new combination in Fragilaria. Fragilaria metcalfeana is proposed as new name for Synedra familiaris var. neogena. The analysis of F. distans and F. fragilarioides confirmed their conspecificity, with F. fragilarioides having priority as name. Finally, two new species, F. pseudofamiliaris Van de Vijver, T.M.Schuster, Kusber et D.M.Williams sp. nov. and F. bahlsiana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov. are described.     A difficult to treat Leishmania infantum relapse after allogeneic stem cell transplantation

    Amphotericin B; Leishmania; PancytopeniaAmfotericina B; Leishmania; PancitopèniaAnfotericina B; Leishmania; PancitopeniaHere we describe a complicated case of a relapsed Leishmania infantum infection after an allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for primary myelofibrosis. Three years earlier the patient had been diagnosed with a hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis secondary to a visceral Leishmania infantum infection, for which he was effectively treated with a cumulative dose of 40 mg/kg liposomal amphotericin B. During the first disease episode he was also diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis for which he received medical follow-up. One year later ruxolitinib was started due to progressive disease. No Leishmania relapse occurred. Nevertheless, the marrow fibrosis progressed, and an allo-SCT was performed. Two months after allo-SCT prolonged fever and a persistent pancytopenia occurred, which was due to a relapse of visceral Leishmaniasis. The infection was refractory to a prolonged treatment with liposomal amphotericin B with a cumulative dose up to 100 mg/kg. Salvage treatment with miltefosine led to reduction of fever within a few days and was followed by a slow recovery of pancytopenia over the following months. The Leishmania parasite load by PCR started to decline and after 3.5 months no Leishmania DNA could be detected anymore and follow-up until ten months afterwards did not show a relapse

    The purpose of this retrospective study is to describe the prevalence, size and location of left ventricular (LV) diverticulum- diverticuli on cardiac dual source CT. Dual source computed tomography cardiac angiography (DS CTCA) was performed in 482 patients. Where literature states their rare occurrence, this retrospective study demonstrates the fairly common finding of incidental LV diverticulum on DS CTCA examinations. LV diverticuli were found incidentally in 20 out of 482 patients (4.1%), a substantially higher incidence than previously reported. Although diverticuli were most common along the inferoseptal wall (45%) they also occurred in all parts of the left ventricular wall. Multiple diverticuli were found in 30% of patients. Dimensions of the LV diverticuli varied enormously. LV diverticuli are reported to be frequently associated with other congenital anomalies. Complications ranging from sudden death and heart failure to embolic events have been described in literature. No relevant associated anomaly or complication was present in the studied 20 patients. Our data support the hypothesis that LV diverticuli, incidentally found in adulthood, follow a benign course and can be managed conservatively. More knowledge is however required to understand history and prognosis about this condition

    Constrained 2-D/3-D Registration for Motion Compensation in AFib Ablation Procedures

    Abstract. Fluoroscopic overlay images rendered from pre-operative vol-umetric data can provide additional guidance for physicians during catheter ablation procedures for treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib). As these overlay images are compromised by cardiac and respiratory motion, mo-tion compensation methods have been proposed. The approaches so far either require simultaneous biplane imaging for 3-D motion compensa-tion or, in case of mono-plane X-ray imaging, provide only a limited 2-D functionality. To overcome the downsides of the previously suggested methods, we propose a new approach that facilitates full 3-D motion compensation even if only mono-plane X-ray views are available. To this end, we use constrained model-based 2-D/3-D registration to track a circumferential mapping catheter which is commonly used during AFib catheter ablation procedures. Our approach yields an average 2-D track-ing error of 0.6 mm and an average 3-D tracking error of 2.1 mm.

    Right Ventricular Adaptation Is Associated with the Glu298Asp Variant of the NOS3 Gene in Elite Athletes

    Nitric oxide (NO), an important endogenous pulmonary vasodilator is synthetized by the endothelial NO synthase (NOS3). Reduced NO bioavailability and thus the Glu298Asp polymorphism of NOS3 may enhance right ventricular (RV) afterload and hypertrophic remodeling and influence athletic performance. To test this hypothesis world class level athletes (water polo players, kayakers, canoeists, rowers, swimmers, n = 126) with a VO2 maximum greater than 50ml/kg/min were compared with non-athletic volunteers (n = 155). Cardiopulmonary exercise tests and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) were performed to determine structural or functional changes. Genotype distribution of the NOS3 Glu298Asp polymorphism was not affected by gender or physical performance. Cardiac MRI showed increased stroke volume with eccentric hypertrophy in all athletes regardless of their genotype. However, the Asp allelic variant carriers had increased RV mass index (32+/-6g versus 27+/-6g, p<0.01) and larger RV stroke volume index (71+/-10ml versus 64+/-10ml, p<0.01) than athletes with a Glu/Glu genotype. Genotype was not significantly associated with athletic performance. In the non-athletic group no genotype related differences were detected. The association between the NOS3 Glu298Asp polymorphism and RV structure and dimension in elite athletes emphasizes the importance of NOS3 gene function and NO bioavailability in sport related cardiac adaptation
