Propulsion Study for Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT)
Propulsion requirements were determined for 0.5 and 0.7 Mach aircraft. Sensitivity studies were conducted on both these aircraft to determine parametrically the influence of propulsion characteristics on aircraft size and direct operating cost (DOC). Candidate technology elements and design features were identified and parametric studies conducted to select the STAT advanced engine cycle. Trade off studies were conducted to determine those advanced technologies and design features that would offer a reduction in DOC for operation of the STAT engines. These features were incorporated in the two STAT engines. A benefit assessment was conducted comparing the STAT engines to current technology engines of the same power and to 1985 derivatives of the current technology engines. Research and development programs were recommended as part of an overall technology development plan to ensure that full commercial development of the STAT engines could be initiated in 1988
Extended family caring for children orphaned by AIDS: balancing essential work and caregiving in a high HIV prevalence nations.
While over 90 per cent of the 15 million children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS are cared for by family members, there is little information about whether adults can meet orphans' essential caregiving needs while working to economically survive. Using a survey we conducted in Botswana of 1033 working adults, we analyse the experience of adults who are caring for orphans. Over one-third of working adults were caring for orphans and many with few financial resources: 82% were living on household incomes below US$10 purchasing power parity adjusted per person per day. Because of their caregiving responsibilities, they were less able to supplement income with overtime, weekend, evening, or night work. At the same time caregiving responsibilities meant orphan caregivers spent fewer hours caring for their own children and other family members. Nearly half of orphan caregivers had difficulties meeting their children's needs, and nearly 75% weren't able to meet with children's teachers. Pay loss at work compounded the problems: One-quarter of orphan caregivers reported having to take unpaid leave to meet sick childcare needs and nearly half reported being absent from work for children's routine health care. This paper makes clear that if families are to provide adequate care for orphans while economically surviving there needs to be increases in social supports and improvements in working conditions
"If chemists don’t do it, who is going to?" Peer-driven occupational change and the emergence of green chemistry
Occupational membership guides what people do, how they think of themselves, and how they interact in organizations and with society. While a rich literature explains how occupations adapt in response to external triggers for change, we have limited insight into how occupational incumbents, absent external triggers, work to influence how their peers do their work. We investigate the emergence and growth of “green chemistry,” an effort by chemists to encourage other chemists to reduce the health, safety, and environmental impacts of chemical products and processes. We find that advocates simultaneously advanced normalizing, moralizing, and pragmatizing frames for green chemistry and that each frame resonated differently with chemists in their various occupational roles. While this pluralistic approach generated broad acceptance of the change effort, it also exposed tensions, which threatened the coherence of the change. Divergent responses of advocates to these tensions contribute to a persistent state of pluralism and dynamism in the change effort. We discuss implications for theory on occupational change arising from our attention to internally-generated peer-driven change, heterogeneity within occupations, and change efforts that moralize occupational work.Meyer Fund for Sustainability grant (University of Oregon

Multipurpose High Frequency Electron Spin Resonance Spectrometer for Condensed Matter Research
We describe a quasi-optical multifrequency ESR spectrometer operating in the
75-225 GHz range and optimized at 210 GHz for general use in condensed matter
physics, chemistry and biology. The quasi-optical bridge detects the change of
mm wave polarization at the ESR. A controllable reference arm maintains a mm
wave bias at the detector. The attained sensitivity of 2x10^10 spin/G/(Hz)1/2,
measured on a dilute Mn:MgO sample in a non-resonant probe head at 222.4 GHz
and 300 K, is comparable to commercial high sensitive X band spectrometers. The
spectrometer has a Fabry-Perot resonator based probe head to measure aqueous
solutions, and a probe head to measure magnetic field angular dependence of
single crystals. The spectrometer is robust and easy to use and may be operated
by undergraduate students. Its performance is demonstrated by examples from

Pluto's global surface composition through pixel-by-pixel Hapke modeling of New Horizons Ralph/LEISA data
On July 14th 2015, NASA's New Horizons mission gave us an unprecedented
detailed view of the Pluto system. The complex compositional diversity of
Pluto's encounter hemisphere was revealed by the Ralph/LEISA infrared
spectrometer on board of New Horizons. We present compositional maps of Pluto
defining the spatial distribution of the abundance and textural properties of
the volatiles methane and nitrogen ices and non-volatiles water ice and tholin.
These results are obtained by applying a pixel-by-pixel Hapke radiative
transfer model to the LEISA scans. Our analysis focuses mainly on the large
scale latitudinal variations of methane and nitrogen ices and aims at setting
observational constraints to volatile transport models. Specifically, we find
three latitudinal bands: the first, enriched in methane, extends from the pole
to 55deg N, the second dominated by nitrogen, continues south to 35deg N, and
the third, composed again mainly of methane, reaches 20deg N. We demonstrate
that the distribution of volatiles across these surface units can be explained
by differences in insolation over the past few decades. The latitudinal pattern
is broken by Sputnik Planitia, a large reservoir of volatiles, with nitrogen
playing the most important role. The physical properties of methane and
nitrogen in this region are suggestive of the presence of a cold trap or
possible volatile stratification. Furthermore our modeling results point to a
possible sublimation transport of nitrogen from the northwest edge of Sputnik

Evidence for antibody as a protective correlate for COVID-19 vaccines
A correlate of protection (CoP) is urgently needed to expedite development of additional COVID-19 vaccines to meet unprecedented global demand. To assess whether antibody titers may reasonably predict efficacy and serve as the basis of a CoP, we evaluated the relationship between efficacy and in vitro neutralizing and binding antibodies of 7 vaccines for which sufficient data have been generated. Once calibrated to titers of human convalescent sera reported in each study, a robust correlation was seen between neutralizing titer and efficacy (ρ = 0.79) and binding antibody titer and efficacy (ρ = 0.93), despite geographically diverse study populations subject to different forces of infection and circulating variants, and use of different endpoints, assays, convalescent sera panels and manufacturing platforms. Together with evidence from natural history studies and animal models, these results support the use of post-immunization antibody titers as the basis for establishing a correlate of protection for COVID-19 vaccines
