    Colored bosons on top FBA and angular cross section for ttˉt \bar t production

    With full data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb1^{-1}, CDF has updated the top quark forward-backward asymmetry (FBA) as functions of rapidity difference Δy|\Delta y| and ttˉt\bar t invariant mass MttˉM_{t\bar t}. Beside the sustained inconsistency between experiments and standard model (SM) predictions at large Δy|\Delta y| and MttˉM_{t\bar t}, an unexpected large first Legendre moment with a1=0.39±0.108a_1= 0.39\pm 0.108 is found. In order to solve the large top FBA, we study the contributions of color triplet scalar and color octet vector boson. We find that the top FBA at Δy>1|\Delta y| >1 and Mttˉ>450M_{t\bar t} > 450 GeV in triplet and octet model could be enhanced to be around 30% and 20%, whereas the first Legendre moment is a1Di=0.38a^{\bf Di}_1= 0.38 and a1Axi=0.23a^{\bf Axi}_1= 0.23, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures; references adde

    Optimal Walking of an Underactuated Planar Biped with Segmented Torso

    Recently, underactuated bipeds with pointed feet have been studied to achieve dynamic and energy efficient robot walking patterns. However, these studies usually simplify a robot torso as one link, which is different from a human torsos containing 33 vertebrae. In this paper, therefore, we study the optimal walking of a 6-link planar biped with a segmented torso derived from its 5-link counterpart while ensuring that two models are equivalent when the additional torso joint is locked. For the walking, we suppose that each step is composed of a single support phase and an instantaneous double support phase, and two phases are connected by a plastic impact mapping. In addition, the controlled outputs named symmetry outputs capable of generating exponentially stable orbits using hybrid zero dynamics, are adopted to improve physical interpretation. The desired outputs are parameterized by B´ezier functions, with 5-link robot having 16 parameters to optimize and 6-link robot having 19 parameters. According to our energy criterion, the segmented torso structure may reduce energy consumption up to 8% in bipedal walking, and the maximum energy saving is achieved at high walking speeds, while leaving the criteria at low walking speeds remain similar for both robots.China CSC LCF

    Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture asserts that every digraph (without digons) has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. We prove its weighted version for tournaments missing a generalized star.     Computationally Efficient Optimization of a Five-Phase Flux-Switching PM Machine Under Different Operating Conditions

    This paper investigates the comparative design optimizations of a five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine for in-wheel traction applications. To improve the comprehensive performance of the motor, two kinds of large-scale design optimizations under different operating conditions are performed and compared, including the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point and the optimization targeting the whole driving cycles. Three driving cycles are taken into account, namely, the urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS), the highway fuel economy driving schedule (HWFET), and the combined UDDS/HWFET, representing the city, highway, and combined city/highway driving, respectively. Meanwhile, the computationally efficient finite-element analysis (CE-FEA) method, the cyclic representative operating points extraction technique, as well as the response surface methodology (in order to minimize the number of experiments when establishing the inverse machine model), are presented to reduce the computational effort and cost. From the results and discussion, it will be found that the optimization results against different operating conditions exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of geometry, efficiency, and energy loss distributions. For the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point, the optimal design tends to reduce copper losses but suffer from high core losses; for UDDS, the optimal design tends to minimize both copper losses and PM eddy-current losses in the low-speed region; for HWFET, the optimal design tends to minimize core losses in the high-speed region; for the combined UDDS/HWFET, the optimal design tends to balance/compromise the loss components in both the low-speed and high-speed regions.     Pioglitazone inhibits growth of carcinoid cells and promotes TRAIL-induced apoptosis by induction of p21(waf1/cip1)

    Background/Aims: We investigated the effect of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) agonist pioglitazone on growth and TRAIL-induced apoptosis in carcinoid cells. Methods: Carcinoid cells were incubated without and with pioglitazone. Effects on growth were examined by cell count and cell cycle analysis. p21(waf1/cip1) expression was determined by Western blotting. Cytotoxicity assay was performed by FACS analysis. Results: Pioglitazone suppressed the growth and induced apoptosis of carcinoid cells. Additionally, pioglitazone significantly enhanced carcinoid cell death induced by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL). The enhancement of TRAIL-induced apoptosis was associated with an upregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(waf1/cip1) in pioglitazone-treated carcinoid cells. Importantly, overexpression of p21(waf1/cip1) in carcinoid cells by adenoviral gene transfer of p21 sensitized them to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Conclusions: These results suggest that pioglitazone inhibits cell growth and sensitizes cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis by induction of p21(waf1/cip1). Therefore, pioglitazone can be an effective therapeutic adjuvant for the treatment of carcinoid tumors. Copyright (C) 2001 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Transition in Hypersonic Boundary Layers: Role of Dilatational Waves

    Transition and turbulence production in a hypersonic boundary layer is investigated in a Mach 6 quiet wind tunnel using Rayleigh-scattering visualization, fast-response pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry. It is found that the second instability acoustic mode is the key modulator of the transition process. The second mode experiences a rapid growth and a very fast annihilation due to the effect of bulk viscosity. The second mode interacts strongly with the first vorticity mode to directly promote a fast growth of the latter and leads to immediate transition to turbulence.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
