Comment on "Magnetic field effects on neutron diffraction in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt3"
Moreno and Sauls [Phys. Rev. B 63, 024419 (2000)] have recently tried to
reanalyze earlier neutron scattering studies of the antiferromagnetic order in
UPt3 with a magnetic field applied in the basal plane. In their calculation of
the magnetic Bragg peak intensities, they perform an average over different
magnetic structures belonging to distinct symmetry representations. This is
incorrect. In addition, they have mistaken the magnetic field direction in one
of the experiments, hence invalidating their conclusions concerning the
experimental results.Comment: Revised 5 June 2001: Added group theory analysis and modified

Magnetic studies on the metallic perovskite-type compound Mn 3SnN
Mn3SnN is a metallic compound of perovskite-type structure which shows four different crystallographic and magnetically ordered phases. From neutron diffraction data, magnetic measurements and Mössbauer experiments performed at different temperatures it is concluded that the magnetic properties depend critically on the existence of singularities in the density of states.
Weak antiferromagnetism due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in BaCuOCl
The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate BaCuOCl contains
folded CuO chains with four magnetic copper ions () per unit cell.
An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange
theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate.
The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more
weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange
interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic
Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Both, the
superexchange theory and the complementary group theoretical consideration,
lead to the same conclusion on the character of this order. The analysis of the
ground-state magnetic properties of the derived model leads to the prediction
of an additional noncollinear modulation of the antiferromagnetic structure.
This weak antiferromagnetism is restricted to one of the Cu sublattices.Comment: 13 pages, 1 table, 4 figure

Ternary erbium chromium sulfides : structural relationships and magnetic properties
Single crystals of four erbium-chromium sulfides have been grown by chemical vapor transport using iodine as the transporting agent. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that in Er(3)CrS(6) octahedral sites are occupied exclusively by Cr(3+) cations, leading to one-dimensional CrS(4)(5-) chains of edge-sharing octahedra, while in Er(2)CrS(4), Er(3+), and Cr(2+) cations occupy the available octahedral sites in an ordered manner. By contrast, in Er(6)Cr(2)S(11) and Er(4)CrS(7), Er(3+) and Cr(2+) ions are disordered over the octahedral sites. In Er(2)CrS(4), Er(6)Cr(2)S(11), and Er(4)CrS(7), the network of octahedra generates an anionic framework constructed from M(2)S(5) slabs of varying thickness, linked by one-dimensional octahedral chains. This suggests that these three phases belong to a series in which the anionic framework may be described by the general formula [M(2n+1)S(4n+3)](x-), with charge balancing provided by Er(3+) cations located in sites of high-coordination number within one-dimensional channels defined by the framework. Er(4)CrS(7), Er(6)Cr(2)S(11), and Er(2)CrS(4) may thus be considered as the n = 1, 2, and infinity members of this series. While Er(4)CrS(7) is paramagnetic, successive magnetic transitions associated with ordering of the chromium and erbium sub-lattices are observed on cooling Er(3)CrS(6) (T(C)(Cr) = 30 K; T(C)(Er) = 11 K) and Er(2)CrS(4) (T(N)(Cr) = 42 K, T(N)(Er) = 10 K) whereas Er(6)Cr(2)S(11) exhibits ordering of the chromium sub-lattice only (T(N) = 11.4 K)

The equivalent charge concept and its application to the electrostatic energy of charges and multipoles
The concept of non overlapping charges developed by the author has proven very useful for the evaluation of the Coulomb energy represented by the difference of two positive quantities of which one is an expansion in reciprocal space, the other is a constant. We show here that dipoles and more generally multipoles can be replaced by equivalent non overlapping charge distributions. Thus even in the most general cases of charges and multipoles the electrostatic interaction energy can be represented by the difference of two positive quantities with good convergence properties and in the frame of a simple formalism. The method is applicable to any symmetry. As a test we calculate the known dipolar magnetostatic energy of MnO. For TiO2 and CdCl2 we evaluate the Coulomb energies, potentials and fields as well as the dipolar moments, energies and fields self consistently. What is remarkable in the method is still the great arbitrariness left in the choice of the non overlapping charge density functions.
