    Observations of one young and three middle-aged γ\gamma-ray pulsars with the Gran Telescopio Canarias

    We used the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias to search for the optical counterparts to four isolated γ\gamma-ray pulsars, all detected in the X-rays by either \xmm\ or \chan\ but not yet in the optical. Three of them are middle-aged pulsars -- PSR\, J1846+0919 (0.36 Myr), PSR\, J2055+2539 (1.2 Myr), PSR\, J2043+2740 (1.2 Myr) -- and one, PSR\, J1907+0602, is a young pulsar (19.5 kyr). For both PSR\, J1907+0602 and PSR\, J2055+2539 we found one object close to the pulsar position. However, in both cases such an object cannot be a viable candidate counterpart to the pulsar. For PSR\, J1907+0602, because it would imply an anomalously red spectrum for the pulsar and for PSR\, J2055+2539 because the pulsar would be unrealistically bright (r′=20.34±0.04r'=20.34\pm0.04) for the assumed distance and interstellar extinction. For PSR\, J1846+0919, we found no object sufficiently close to the expected position to claim a possible association, whereas for PSR\, J2043+2740 we confirm our previous findings that the object nearest to the pulsar position is an unrelated field star. We used our brightness limits (g′≈27g' \approx 27), the first obtained with a large-aperture telescope for both PSR\, J1846+0919 and PSR\, J2055+2539, to constrain the optical emission properties of these pulsars and investigate the presence of spectral turnovers at low energies in their multi-wavelength spectra.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accpted for publication in MNRA

    The research is aimed at reviewing the regulatory regime governing the sale of inheritance under Roman Law. The sale of inheritance (hereditatis venditio) is the contract by which one person, the venditor, makes over to someone else, the emptor, the assets he has acquired mortis causa, in return for payment. The economic purpose of the contract is to put the purchaser in the same position in which he would have found himself had he been the heir. According to the principles of Roman Law, however, an heir can\u2019t hand over his status as such and therefore, in order to achieve the same practical result, he has to resort to selling the proceeds of the inheritance and to agreeing with the purchaser to be held harmless from any expenses or claims related to them. By doing so, the vendor keeps nonetheless his status as heir and is therefor liable toward any third party: he keeps the capacity to sue the debtors of the inheritance as well as the capacity to be sued by the creditors of the inheritance. Hence the contract provides that the vendor shall cede to the purchaser the rights of action against third parties with a mandatum actionis and that the purchaser shall undertake to defendere the vendor in case he were sued because of the inheritance. Owing to a legal rule forbidding the transfer of the capacity to be sued, in case the purchaser omitted to defendere the vendor in trial, on the one hand the latter could only rely on the former\u2019s liability for breach of contract and would be left to cope with the outcome of said trial, on the other hand the plaintiff would be exposed to the risk of having to face a defendant who has already disposed of the proceeds of the inheritance and has no more actual interest in the res controversa. The dissertation is composed of five chapters. The first chapter deals with the recognition of the rules of law governing the contract (which are contained in Digest 18.4 and Codex 4.39) and delivers a brief review of relevant literature. The second chapter covers the topic of the object of the contract. Being a collective noun, hereditas refers to the whole bulk of assets and liabilities belonging to a deceased person. The peculiarity lying therein raises several questions regarding, above all, the criteria according to which an asset or a liability ought to be included in the purchased inheritance. The third chapter studies the rights and obligations of parties, both arising out of the contract and imposed by mandatory rules. For expository purpose, those obligations have been classified in two large groups: the first group comprises obligations aimed at guaranteeing that the purchaser would be entitled to the net economic outcome of the inheritance, while the second group encompasses the obligations intended for balancing out the fact that the vendor remains the only one who\u2019s capable to sue and to be sued propter hereditatem. The fourth chapter examines further the issue of legitimatio ad causam as far as the so-called hereditarias actiones is concerned. The fifth chapter finally surveys the consequences of the fact that the purchaser lacks the capacity to be sued by the creditors of the inheritance, particularly in the event that the parties might agree upon the sale of inheritance with the sole intent of defrauding said creditors

    Genetic characterization of four native Italian shepherd dog breeds and analysis of their relationship to cosmopolitan dog breeds using microsatellite markers

    Very little research into genetic diversity of Italian native dog breeds has been carried out so far. In this study we aimed to estimate and compare the genetic diversity of four native Italian shepherd dog breeds: the Maremma, Bergamasco, Lupino del Gigante and Oropa shepherds. Therefore, some cosmopolitan dog breeds, which have been widely raised in Italy for a long time past, have also been considered to check possible influence of these dog populations on the Italian autochthonous breeds considered here. A total of 212 individuals, belonging to 10 different dog breeds, were sampled and genotyped using 18 autosomal microsatellite loci. We analyzed the genetic diversity of these breeds, within breed diversity, breed relationship and population structure. The 10 breeds considered in this study were clearly genetically differentiated from each other, regardless of current population sizes and the onset of separate breeding history. The level of genetic diversity explained 20% of the total genetic variation. The level of H E found here is in agreement with that found by other studies. The native Italian breeds showed generally higher genetic diversity compared with the long established, well-defined cosmopolitan dog breeds. As the Border Collie seems closer to the Italian breeds than the other cosmopolitan shepherd dogs considered here, a possible utilization of this breed to improve working performance in Italian traditional working shepherd dogs cannot be ignored. The data and information found here can be utilized in the organization of conservation programs planned to reduce inbreeding and to minimize loss of genetic variability

    Observations of three young gamma-ray pulsars with the Gran Telescopio Canarias

    We report the analysis of the first deep optical observations of three isolated γ\gamma-ray pulsars detected by the {\em Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}: the radio-loud PSR\, J0248+6021 and PSR\, J0631+1036, and the radio-quiet PSR\, J0633+0632. The latter has also been detected in the X rays. The pulsars are very similar in their spin-down age (τ∼\tau \sim40--60 kyrs), spin-down energy (E˙∼1035\dot{E} \sim10^{35} erg s−1^{-1}), and dipolar surface magnetic field (B∼3B \sim 3--5×10125\times10^{12} G). These pulsars are promising targets for multi-wavelength observations, since they have been already detected in γ\gamma rays and in radio or X-rays. None of them has been detected yet in the optical band. We observed the three pulsar fields in 2014 with the Spanish 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We could not find any candidate optical counterpart to the three pulsars close to their most recent radio or {\em Chandra} positions down to 3σ3 \sigma limits of g′∼27.3g'\sim27.3, g′∼27g'\sim27, g′∼27.3g'\sim27.3 for PSR\, J0248+6021, J0631+1036, and J0633+0632, respectively. From the inferred optical upper limits and estimated distance and interstellar extinction, we derived limits on the pulsar optical luminosity. We also searched for the X-ray counterpart to PSR\, J0248+6021 with \chan\ but we did not detect the pulsar down to a 3σ\sigma flux limit of 5×10−145 \times 10^{-14} erg cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} (0.3--10 keV). For all these pulsars, we compared the optical flux upper limits with the extrapolations in the optical domain of the γ\gamma-ray spectra and compared their multi-wavelength properties with those of other γ\gamma-ray pulsars of comparable age.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Analysis of airplane boarding via space-time geometry and random matrix theory

    We show that airplane boarding can be asymptotically modeled by 2-dimensional Lorentzian geometry. Boarding time is given by the maximal proper time among curves in the model. Discrepancies between the model and simulation results are closely related to random matrix theory. We then show how such models can be used to explain why some commonly practiced airline boarding policies are ineffective and even detrimental.Comment: 4 page

    Effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL (CECT 4529) supplementation on healthy cat performance

    Background The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the probiotic strain Lactobacillusacidophilus D2/CSL (CECT 4529) on nutritional condition and faecal quality in cats. Methods Ten healthy adult cats from the same cattery were included (aged >9 months; male:female sex ratio=3:7). The animals were randomly assigned to a control group (CTR; n=5; male:female=1:4; room 1: 16 m 2) and to a treated group (LACTO; n=5; male:female=2:3; room 2: 16 m 2) receiving the same commercial dry diet. The LACTO group diet was supplemented with the probiotic (5 x 10 9 cfu/kg feed at least). A five-week experimental period was applied, and nutritional status was monitored by bodyweight (BW) and body condition score (BCS). Faecal quality was evaluated using faecal score (FS) and faecal moisture (FM) parameters. Plate counts of some faecal bacteria species were carried out. The data obtained were analysed using MIXED, GLM and NPAR1WAY procedures (SAS V.9.4; P 640.05). Results The two groups did not show differences in BW and BCS data. A clear effect of the probiotic supplementation on FM was recorded (LACTO 44 per cent v CTR group 46 per cent; P=0.04). FS in the LACTO group (3.35) was close to ideal values (2-3) in comparison with the CTR group (3.75). Positive effects of Lacidophilus D2/CSL have been recorded in terms of increase in faecal lactobacilli counts and reduction in faecal coli counts. Conclusions This study's preliminary results describe how inclusion of Lacidophilus D2/CSL (CECT 4529) probiotic strain in cats' diets could effectively improve faecal quality parameters and consequently gut health in adult healthy cats
