Transfer RNA Mimicry in a New Group of Positive-Strand RNA Plant Viruses, the Furoviruses: Differential Aminoacylation between the RNA Components of One Genome
AbstractRecent sequencing of the genomes of several furoviruses—fungus-transmitted rod-shaped positive-strand plant viruses—has suggested the presence of tRNA-like structures (TLSs) at the 3′ ends of the genomic RNAs. We show here that the genomic RNAs of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV), beet soil-borne virus (BSBV), potato mop-top virus (PMTV), peanut clump virus (PCV), and Indian peanut clump virus (IPCV) all possess functional TLSs that are capable of high-efficiency valylation. While the SBWMV, BSBV, and PMTV TLSs are similar to those found in tymoviruses, the PCV and IPCV TLSs harbor an insertion of about 40 nucleotides between the two halves of the TLS. The valylated SBWMV and BSBV RNAs formed tight complexes with wheat germ EF-1α · GTP (Kd= 2 to 11 nM), whereas valylated PMTV, PCV, and IPCV RNAs bound EF-1α · GTP weakly (Kd≥ 50 nM). The TLS of PCV RNA2 differs from PCV RNA1 in lacking the major valine identity nucleotide in the anticodon and consequently is capable of only very inefficient valylation. This is the first case of differential aminoacylation between the RNA components of one genome
Acoustically driven ferromagnetic resonance
Surface acoustic waves (SAW) in the GHz frequency range are exploited for the
all-elastic excitation and detection of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in a
ferromagnetic/ferroelectric (nickel/lithium niobate) hybrid device. We measure
the SAW magneto-transmission at room temperature as a function of frequency,
external magnetic field magnitude, and orientation. Our data are well described
by a modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert approach, in which a virtual,
strain-induced tickle field drives the magnetization precession. This causes a
distinct magnetic field orientation dependence of elastically driven FMR that
we observe in both model and experiment.Comment: 4 page
The galactic magnetic field in the quasar 3C216
Multifrequency polarimetric observations made with the Very Long Baseline
Array of the quasar 3C216 reveal the presence of Faraday rotation measures
(RMs) in excess of 2000 rad/m**2 in the source rest frame, in the arc of
emission located at ~ 140 mas from the core. Rotation measures in the range
-300 - +300 rad/m**2 are detected in the inner 5 mas (~30 parsecs). while the
rotation measures near the core can be explained as due to a magnetic field in
the narrow line region, we favor the interpretation for the high RM in the arc
as due to a ``local'' Faraday screen, produced in a shock where the jet is
deflected by the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. Our results indicate
that a galacit magnetic field of the order of 50 microGauss on a scale greater
than 100 pc must be present in the galactic medium.Comment: 23 pages, 3 tables, 11 figures. To appear on The Astronomical

The determinants of election to the United Nations Security Council
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11127-013-0096-4.The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the foremost international body responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. Members vote on issues of global importance and consequently receive perks—election to the UNSC predicts, for instance, World Bank and IMF loans. But who gets elected to the UNSC? Addressing this question empirically is not straightforward as it requires a model that allows for discrete choices at the regional and international levels; the former nominates candidates while the latter ratifies them. Using an original multiple discrete choice model to analyze a dataset of 180 elections from 1970 to 2005, we find that UNSC election appears to derive from a compromise between the demands of populous countries to win election more frequently and a norm of giving each country its turn. We also find evidence that richer countries from the developing world win election more often, while involvement in warfare lowers election probability. By contrast, development aid does not predict election
The World-Trade Web: Topological Properties, Dynamics, and Evolution
This paper studies the statistical properties of the web of import-export
relationships among world countries using a weighted-network approach. We
analyze how the distributions of the most important network statistics
measuring connectivity, assortativity, clustering and centrality have
co-evolved over time. We show that all node-statistic distributions and their
correlation structure have remained surprisingly stable in the last 20 years --
and are likely to do so in the future. Conversely, the distribution of
(positive) link weights is slowly moving from a log-normal density towards a
power law. We also characterize the autoregressive properties of
network-statistics dynamics. We find that network-statistics growth rates are
well-proxied by fat-tailed densities like the Laplace or the asymmetric
exponential-power. Finally, we find that all our results are reasonably robust
to a few alternative, economically-meaningful, weighting schemes.Comment: 44 pages, 39 eps figure
DIPSBC--data integration platform for systems biology collaborations
BACKGROUND: Modern biomedical research is often organized in collaborations involving labs worldwide. In particular in systems biology, complex molecular systems are analyzed that require the generation and interpretation of heterogeneous data for their explanation, for example ranging from gene expression studies and mass spectrometry measurements to experimental techniques for detecting molecular interactions and functional assays. XML has become the most prominent format for representing and exchanging these data. However, besides the development of standards there is still a fundamental lack of data integration systems that are able to utilize these exchange formats, organize the data in an integrative way and link it with applications for data interpretation and analysis. RESULTS: We have developed DIPSBC, an interactive data integration platform supporting collaborative research projects, based on Foswiki, Solr/Lucene, and specific helper applications. We describe the main features of the implementation and highlight the performance of the system with several use cases. All components of the system are platform independent and open-source developments and thus can be easily adopted by researchers. An exemplary installation of the platform which also provides several helper applications and detailed instructions for system usage and setup is available at http://dipsbc.molgen.mpg.de. CONCLUSIONS: DIPSBC is a data integration platform for medium-scale collaboration projects that has been tested already within several research collaborations. Because of its modular design and the incorporation of XML data formats it is highly flexible and easy to use
Decentralization as a Disincentive for Transnational Terror? An Empirical Test
Using panel data for a maximum of 109 countries over the years 1976-2000, we empirically analyze the impact of decentralization on the occurrence of transnational terror. Taking account of the potential simultaneity between terror and decentralization, our results show that expenditure decentralization robustly reduces the number of terror events in a country, while political decentralization has no impact
Pharmacokinetics and tumor dynamics of the nanoparticle IT-101 from PET imaging and tumor histological measurements
IT-101, a cyclodextrin polymer-based nanoparticle containing camptothecin, is in clinical development for the treatment of cancer. Multiorgan pharmacokinetics and accumulation in tumor tissue of IT-101 is investigated by using PET. IT-101 is modified through the attachment of a 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-Tris-acetic acid ligand to bind ^(64)Cu^(2+). This modification does not affect the particle size and minimally affects the surface charge of the resulting nanoparticles. PET data from ^(64)Cu-labeled IT-101 are used to quantify the in vivo biodistribution in mice bearing Neuro2A s.c. tumors. The ^(64)Cu-labeled IT-101 displays a biphasic plasma elimination. Approximately 8% of the injected dose is rapidly cleared as a low-molecular-weight fraction through the kidneys. The remaining material circulates in plasma with a terminal half-life of 13.3 h. Steadily increasing concentrations, up to 11% injected dose per cm^3, are observed in the tumor over 24 h, higher than any other tissue at that time. A 3-compartment model is used to determine vascular permeability and nanoparticle retention in tumors, and is able to accurately represent the experimental data. The calculated tumor vascular permeability indicates that the majority of nanoparticles stay intact in circulation and do not disassemble into individual polymer strands. A key assumption to modeling the tumor dynamics is that there is a “sink” for the nanoparticles within the tumor. Histological measurements using confocal microscopy show that IT-101 localizes within tumor cells and provides the sink in the tumor for the nanoparticles
