    Personalization by Partial Evaluation.

    Get PDF
The central contribution of this paper is to model personalization by the programmatic notion of partial evaluation.Partial evaluation is a technique used to automatically specialize programs, given incomplete information about their input. The methodology presented here models a collection of information resources as a program (which abstracts the underlying schema of organization and flow of information),partially evaluates the program with respect to user input, and recreates a personalized site from the specialized program. This enables a customizable methodology called PIPE that supports the automatic specialization of resources, without enumerating the interaction sequences beforehand .Issues relating to the scalability of PIPE,information integration,sessioniz-ling scenarios, and case studies are presented

Background: Pregnancy and childbirth constitute a time of transition in women’s lives. Many women turn to complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) during pregnancy. However, little is known about women’s experiences of CAM in relation to their pregnancy and childbirth journey. Methods: a narrative study aimed to gain insight into the experiences of women who use CAM in pregnancy and to explore the contribution CAM made to their pregnancy and childbirth journey. Interviews were conducted with 14 women who had used a range of CAMs during pregnancy and birth. Data analysis focussed on the meaning and significance of CAM use in pregnancy and a number of core themes emerged. Results: This paper presents some findings from this research which reveals a narrative genre that can be defined as transformational. CAM has a positive transformational effect on women’s experience of pregnancy and childbirth. Conclusion: Women’s narratives illustrate the positive impact of CAM on the subjective experiences of pregnancy and childbirth.Key Words: complementary and alternative medicine, pregnancy, holism. narrativ

    Why a Short-Term Study Abroad?

    Get PDF
Current graduate students in a business school are often expected to be the future business leaders in a global environment. Universities are able to facilitate a global awareness by offering short-term study abroad courses. Graduate students often cannot leave their workplace or families for the extended study abroad semester, and the short-term abroad appears to fit their life-style. This paper describes a short-term study abroad concentrating on Technology and Innovation in a developing country. While this is only one class, offered three consecutive years, there are some lessons learned. It is recognized that the impact on learning needs more attention and research to convince faculty and universities that the endeavor is able to benefit graduate students in their careers

Teaching Strategies in the National Security Affairs Program: Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment

    Get PDF
Most curricula relative to Congress and its interface with the Department of Defense relate to the topics of war, weapons, conflict and budgets. An important subtopic of national security studies are Congressional interventions into the Defense Department related to soft policies which are more nearly categorized as micro sociological issues due to their touching people within the massive security bureaucracy at the individual and personal level.  Early congressional interventions among this categorization include concerns about suicide, benefits, health and well-being or the 1940s GI Bill which encouraged personal growth through educational and training benefits in order to decrease a reduction in unemployment post war. During the 2020s’ Congress has begun to intervene in military conduct specifically as this conduct relates to sexual harassment and rape. Due to the importance being placed legislatively around this subject matter, its inclusion in a military professional college curriculum is an imperative. Dr. Raum will discuss the evolution of a public policy session for national security professionals around the primary topic of sexual harassment. Covered will be the importance of where such a curriculum topic should be placed, potential content and pitfalls of attempting to teach within this subject area.https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/wps/1006/thumbnail.jp

Confidence Building in Cyberspace: A Comparison of Territorial and Weapons-Based Regimes

    Get PDF
View the Executive SummaryAn analysis of weapons-based confidence-building measures shows how academics can work together to self-police their research for national security implications, socialize new members of the academic community into the importance of considering security issues, and develop and disseminate norms regarding what is and is not a moral and ethical use of these technologies. It may be possible for academics and policymakers to come together to work for a ban or build-down on cyber weapons patterned on international efforts to ban chemical and biological weapons and implement export regimes to control the export of code which may form the components of cyber weapons. If we conceptualize cyberspace as territory, we can also learn from the example of territorially-based confidence-building measures such as those implemented along the Indo-Pakistan border. This approach stresses the importance of developing notification procedures to prevent misperceptions and the escalation spiral, as well as communicating regularly to establish trust between all parties. The case studies presented here illustrate the promises and pitfalls of each approach and offer valuable warnings to policymakers seeking to implement such measures in cyberspace. They show what happens when not everyone in a regime is equally committed to a specific outcome by illustrating the difficulties of monitoring compliance in confidence-building regimes, and show the ways in which doctrines and confidence-building measures may not be perfectly aligned.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1455/thumbnail.jp
