    Airborne Geophysical And Tectonics Of The Ceará Central Domain, Eastern Region Of The Santa Quitéria Magmatic Arc, Borborema Province, Ne Brazil

    The airborne geophysical data gamma-spectrometric and magnetic from Itatira Project (1977) was carried out, in the central region of the State of the Ceará, Brazil. Their processing produced products useful to indirectly identity regional geologic features. The verification and applicability of this approach was tested in a pilot-area whose limits are within the Umirim and Canindé topographic sheets, at 1:100,000 scale. The integration between the airborne geophysical and the geologic field data supported to the geologic mapping at the same cited scale. Two main units were recognized: the Santa Quitéria magmatic arc and the supracrustal sequences that surround the arc. The rocks from Santa Quitéria magmatic arc are characterized by high counting on the K-channel in its almost entire region and intermediate and low counting of eTh and eU. Generally, the supracrustal sequences are characterized by high values on the eU-and-eTh-channels and low on K-channel. The subunit metaultramafics and, mafics granulites, are remarkable by the occurrence retrograde eclogites bands and mafic granulites as lenses within gneisses and migmatites. These subunits present strong negative anomalies, with low counting on the three K, eTh and eU channels.     Comparisons Between The Northwestern Borborema Province, Ne Brazil, And The Southwestern Pharusian Dahomey Belt, Sw Central Africa

    Geological and geochronological data for the northwestern part of the Brasiliano Borborema Province are described and compared with their counterparts in the Pan-African Dahomey (Pharusian) belt that flanks the southeastern margin of the West African Craton, where outcrops are sufficiently continuous to discern the nature of the collision during West Gondwana assembly. In the Médio Coreaú domain, NW Borborema Province, U-Pb and Sm-Nd data have revealed unusual basement rocks representing 2.35-2.30 Ga juvenile crust, along with large tracts of 2.15 -2.10 Ga juvenile gneisses in the Ceará Central domain. These basement blocks were affected by two pulses of intracratonic extension at 1785 and 775 Ma. Prior to West Gondwana collision, a continental arc (the Santa Quitéria batholith) developed between 665 Ma and 620 Ma. The presence of this arc strengthens the hypothesis that convergence between the Borborema Province and the São Luis craton involved closure of an oceanic basin. New geochronological data are presented showing that Palaeoproterozoic orthogneisses (U-Pb upper intercept 2288 ± 2 Ma) were affected by a major late Neoproterozoic event (554 ± 4 Ma U-Pb lower intercept, 558 ± 3 Ma Sm-Nd whole-rock and mineral isochron).     Neoproterozoic Tectonic And Magmatic Episodes In The Nw Sector Of Borborema Province, Ne Brazil, During Assembly Of Western Gondwana

    The Médio Coreaú domain of NE Brazil is located along the northwest margin of Borborema Province, the western branch of a Brasiliano/Pan-African collisional belt that formed during the assembly of Western Gondwana. The early Paleoproterozoic basement of the Médio Coreaú domain is composed of migmatitic gneisses and juvenile granulites, overlain by late Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic rocks intruded by syn- to post-tectonic Brasiliano granitoids. According to integrated structural and geochronological data (U-Pb zircon and monazite ages), the Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution of the Médio Coreaú is characterized by low-angle thrusting and transcurrent deformation. U-Pb geochronological data from plutons intruded during this compressional regime indicate the collisional evolution began at approximately 622 Ma and continued until about 591 Ma. The continuation of convergence until approximately 560 Ma resulted in the formation of NE-SW and E-W shear zones within the Borborema Province and adjoining West African provinces. The final stage of the ductile tectonism was characterized by uplift and high-angle fault generation between approximately 560 and 545 Ma. The last tectonic event was an extensional phase, resulting in the formation of the Jaibaras graben and intrusion of post-orogenic granites at around 532 Ma. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.     U-pb Age Of The Coesite-bearing Eclogite From Nw Borborema Province, Ne Brazil: Implications For Western Gondwana Assembly

    The Late Neoproterozoic assembly of western Gondwana played an important role in the subduction of oceanic and continental lithospheres. Such event was also a source of arc magmatism, reworking of cratonic margins and development of ultra-high pressure (UHP) suture zones. In the Borborema province, NE Brazil, we have described for the first time UHP rocks enclosed within gneiss migmatite and calc-silicate rocks. They bear coesite included in atoll-type garnet from metamafic rocks, identified by petrographic study and Raman microspectroscopy analysis. U-Pb zircon dating of the leucosome of the migmatites and the calc-silicate rock displays, concordant ages of 639. ±. 10. Ma and 649.7. ±. 5. Ma, respectively, here interpreted as the minimum age of the eclogitization event in the region. U-Pb zircon dating of the coesite-bearing rock defined a concordia age of 614. 9. ±. 7.9. Ma that comprised the retrograde eclogitic conditions to amphibolite facies. The UHP rocks, mostly retrograded to garnet amphibolites, occur enclosed in the Paleoproterozoic continental block composed of calc-silicate rocks, migmatized sillimanite gneiss, mylonitic augen gneiss and granitic and tonalitic gneiss along a narrow N-S oriented belt between the Santa Quite´ria magmatic arc and the Transbrasiliano lineament. This block was involved in the subduction to UHP eclogite depths, and was retrogressed to amphibolite during its exhumation and thrusting. Our data indicate an important Neoproterozoic transcontinental suture zone connecting the Pharusian belt with Borborema Province, and probably with the Brasi´lia belt in central Brazil

    Recent structural investigations and geochronological studies of rocks from the Médio Coreaú domain in the NW part of northeast Brazil's Borborema Province provide important constraints on the tectonic evolution of the region both preceeding and during the assembly of West Gondwana. Field observations of structural features and fabrics have revealed the presence of four distinct deformational phases in the MCD: D1, D2, D3 and D4. Only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses record the D1 tectonic event and its preservation is cryptic owing to strong overprinting by the subsequent tectonic phases. The D2, D3 and D4 events affected younger supracrustal rocks and Neoproterzoic magmatic units, and U-Pb geochronological constraints show that all of these tectonic phases represent deformational events that occurred during Brasiliano collision between the West African craton and the NW part of the Borborema Province. The D2 phase, lasting between ca. 622 and 591 Ma, represents a frontal collision stage, which generated NW verging thrust-nappe systems, low-angle foliation, high-grade metamorphism and crustal anatexis. Transition to a strike-slip regime (D3) occurred at around 591 Ma when the region entered a phase of escape tectonics. During this time, the motion of crustal blocks towards NE and E was accommodated along numerous anastomosing shear zones. Syntectonic emplacement of granitoid plutons took place in transtensional domains of the shear zone system. The intrusion of late tectonic granitoids and rapid uplift and cooling of the orogen around 560 Ma as a result of D4 transpressional movements marked the end of the D3 transcurrent regime. These findings show that only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses in the Médio Coreaú domain are polycyclic in nature.     Mesoarchean (3.0 And 2.86 Ga) Host Rocks Of The Iron Oxide-cu-au Bacaba Deposit, Carajás Mineral Province: U-pb Geochronology And Metallogenetic Implications

    The Bacaba iron oxide-copper-gold deposit, situated within a WNW-ESE-striking shear zone in the Carajás Domain, Carajás Mineral Province, is hosted by the Serra Dourada Granite, the Bacaba Tonalite, and crosscutting gabbro intrusions, which were intensely affected by sodic (albite-scapolite), potassic, chloritic, and hydrolytic hydrothermal alteration. This deposit is located 7 km northeast of the world-class Sossego iron oxide-copper-gold deposit and might represent a distal and deeper portion of the same or related hydrothermal system. The U-Pb laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry data for zircon from a sodically altered sample of the Serra Dourada Granite yielded a 2,860±22 Ma (MSWD=11. 5) age. Three samples from the Bacaba Tonalite, including one with potassic alteration and two with Cu-Au mineralization, rendered the 3,001. 2±3. 6 Ma (MSWD=1. 8), 2,990. 9±5. 8 Ma (MSWD=1. 9), and 3,004. 6±9 Ma (MSWD=2. 2) ages, respectively. The ca. 2. 86 and ca. 3. 0 Ga ages are interpreted as the timing of the igneous crystallization of the Serra Dourada Granite and the Bacaba Tonalite, respectively, and represent the oldest magmatic events recognized in the Carajás Domain. The Serra Dourada Granite and the Bacaba Tonalite are interpreted to greatly predate the genesis of the Bacaba deposit. A genetic link is improbable in the light of the similarities with the Sossego deposit, which is also hosted by younger ca. 2. 76 Ga metavolcano-sedimentary units of the Itacaiúnas Supergroup. In this context, the iron oxide-copper-gold deposits in the southern sector of the Carajás Domain could be mainly controlled by important crustal discontinuities, such as a regional shear zone, rather than be associated with a particular rock type.
